What to do

Grand Junction offers a plethora of outdoor activities that cater to all types of adventurers. From hiking and mountain biking to fishing and wildlife watching, there's no shortage of things to do.

One of the most popular activities is mountain biking, especially at the North Fruita Desert Upper Campground. According to Jello D., "the MTB trails are top-notch downhill flowy trails! The bike up can be difficult for beginner, average riders" (source). If you're into water activities, Highline Lake State Park Campground offers a swim beach and boating opportunities. Jennifer D. mentions, "Green, nice lake with a breeze" (source).

For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, the Palisade Basecamp RV Resort is located near wineries and offers a beautiful setting by the Colorado River. Sar notes, "We waded to the middle of the river and watched the sun set against a hill. Beautiful!" (source).

What campers like

Campers appreciate the variety of campgrounds and the beautiful scenery around Grand Junction. Many campgrounds offer well-maintained facilities and friendly staff, making for a pleasant stay.

At the Saddlehorn Campground, Carol M. highlights the cleanliness and spaciousness: "This campground is very well maintained. We stayed in loops A. The sites are spacious. Loop B has incredible views!" (source). Similarly, Glenn S. praises the Grand Junction KOA for its privacy and cleanliness: "This is probably one of the nicest KOAs I’ve stayed at. Great privacy walls between the back-in sites… it is close to the highway, but it’s fine at night" (source).

Campers also love the accessibility and amenities at James M. Robb Colorado River - Island Acres Section Camping. Jacquee P. says, "Clean campsite that is conveniently located near I70. Canyons surrounding the campsite are pretty" (source).

What you should know

While camping near Grand Junction offers many perks, there are a few things you should be aware of to ensure a smooth trip. Some campgrounds can get noisy due to their proximity to highways or other campers.

For instance, Mark S. had a less-than-ideal experience at Saddlehorn Campground: "Noisy and rude campers walking through my site same group up until 2AM drinking and being loud, I will never go back" (source). Similarly, Jasmine B. found the Fruita Section Camping to be noisy: "The downside was it was RIGHT off the highway. If you can fall asleep to the sound of traffic, this is definitely for you!" (source).

Another point to consider is the lack of certain amenities at some campgrounds. For example, the North Fruita Desert Upper Campground does not have drinking water or electric hookups. T K. mentions, "Good trail system, particularly for spring and fall. Exposed campsites. Lots of dust. Clean porta potties" (source).

Tips for camping with families

Camping with family can be a rewarding experience, especially when you choose a campground that caters to the needs of all ages. Look for campgrounds with amenities like playgrounds, clean restrooms, and easy access to activities.

The Grand Junction KOA is a great option for families. Stern notes, "Everything you need, very good Wi-Fi, clean laundry, showers and toilets. Pool is cute for kids" (source). Another family-friendly spot is Highline Lake State Park Campground, where Flo B. enjoyed the shaded sites and activities: "Nicely shaded with trees and green grass. Tree trunks spaced for hammock hanging. Lots to do with reservoirs and bike trails" (source).

For a more rustic experience, consider Nine Mile Hill. Noelle G. shares, "This is a great canyon to camp in with Grand Junction just a short drive away. STUNNING views, sites are nice and spread…definitely a winner" (source).

Tips from RVers

RVers will find plenty of options near Grand Junction, from full-hookup sites to more primitive spots. It's essential to choose a campground that meets your needs, whether it's for a short stay or a longer visit.

The Canyon View RV Resort is highly recommended by RVers. Charles A. says, "Friendly staff got us checked in and to our site quickly. Spacious, level sites with concrete patio and nice grass lawn" (source). Another excellent choice is the Palisade Basecamp RV Resort, where Kathy C. enjoyed the amenities: "The Staff is Happy! Located on the Colorado River. Winery’s & Distillery’s close by. Clean restrooms & laundry" (source).

For those looking for a more budget-friendly option, the Grand Junction Desert Road Recreation Area BLM offers free dispersed camping. Ryan L. found it convenient: "Easy access for low clearance vehicles like my Subaru. Busy but I found a spot no problem tossed some firewood down and had a great night" (source).

Camping near Grand Junction, Colorado, offers a diverse range of experiences, from well-equipped campgrounds to more primitive, dispersed sites. Whether you're traveling with family, looking for a quiet retreat, or seeking adventure on the trails, you'll find the perfect spot to enjoy the great outdoors.

Grand mesa is a special place

Grand mesa is the largest mesa in the world. For over 150 years cattle have roamed here. They need to go. It is time. The diversity and wildlife will slowly be destroyed and it is exponential. The climate is changing and places like this need to to be protected they are our arks. No atvs no generators no cattle. Would improve.the place.ten fold. And absolutely no logging. Ban all fires! We are about to lose it all including Grand mesa. Wake up.

      Update after talking to ranger

We still like this camp very much. But ranger says during summer and especially on weekends, this place is very, very full. So much they close off people coming. Beware if you like quiet camping after fall is best. Boating closes October 1 for bird migration. Geese winter here on frozen lake.

      Unexpected green oasis

Wow. After miles of dry rocky gulches. Even the approach to the park is fairly dry looking. Then you arrive at the well wooded, green campground with green lawns. Rv spots are level. Tents on nice green grass. Flush restrooms with showers and laundry. Sites are well separated. Swim beach. Birding area.
Not completely full, but mostly so mid week September. 5G T-Mobile.

      Hidden Gem

A very nice camp ground for tent campers, very few people, beautiful scenes and within a very short distance of good hiking. Campground staff was helpful and we had a beautiful site right by the lake which is open to fishing and swimming. Be prepared to put a cover on your tent as intermittent thunderstorms come up out of no where. There is no cell service unless you go down route 65 a little more to the beautiful views of the valley.

      Nice fcfs CG

This CG has two sections. The upper part is old school FS, narrow roads, small sites, lots of trees...not a good place for larger TYs or RVs. Best for tenters, Vans, small Class Cs. The lower section is much better for larger RVs and TT, lower cg area has less shade but closer to Ward lake. Vault toilets, trash and water spigots. $20/$10 senior. Run by a contract host. No cell signal and all sites are FF. Lower sites in sun are best for SL-RV

      Shade, greenery, paddling and biking

Stayed 3 nights in site 1. Nicely shaded with trees and green grass. Tree trunks spaced for hammock hanging. Lots to do with reservoirs and bike trails. The campground is a bit far away to carry kayaks to and from water.

Nice cabin rentals in a Colorado State Park

The cabins are HA and have nice sidewalk paths from the parking lot. Inside a mini fridge, coffee maker, and a microwave are provided. There are 2 bunks in the back and a plastic kitchen table in the "living space." The cabins have nice patio furniture on the front porch, which was a nice touch for a State Park.  The outdoor picnic table and campfire area outside the cabin is large. The five cabins in this area are close together and you can view your neighbors but this was not a problem for us. (It would make for great a trip with extended family or friends.) One may consider the cabin pricey, but it was typical for a Colorado state park.

During our stay the bathrooms (vault toilets) near the cabins were so full of bees it was like Candyman was also staying the weekend. There are flush toilets and showers next to a small playground closer to the reservoir. A trail will take you from the cabins to the visitor center. While other areas of the park were not full during our stay, I imagine that at the peak of summer the boating and RVing is plenty.

Very nice higher elv BLM campground

Great BLM campground at higher cool elevation, 8400 elv. 2.8 miles of graded washboard gravel County road from end of pavement. Lots of aspen trees here. Friendly Host on site. Clean vault toilets, 13 sites, $10/$5 senior, 14d limit. All sites are first come, no reservations. Sites are mostly back in and not real big for larger TTs or RVs. Two group sites and a nice large picnic area loop sometimes used for overflow camping. Limited cell signal for Verizon, Att, but no TMobile. No trash and although normally water is available, it was not working in Aug 2021 due to drought. Update Aug 2024 visit..water system is working.

      Nice campground

Stayed at Ward Lake Ward Lake is a nice campground that has two sides with about a half mile road, following the lake separating the sides. Not a lot of shade on the far side. Different types of fire pits, but all had trash left in them 😢 This is one place that fits the saying that if you don’t like the weather, wait twenty minutes, it’ll change. The wind comes from all directions through the day and the wind blowing off the lake adds a little more bite to the wind chill.

      Great!!!

Pretty clean hot springs. I love that the pools are all spread out with well-maintained trails to access them. The farther the pools are, the more private they become with amazing views. I have never in my life felt more comfortable with myself at a place, other than here. I love that clothing is optional and guests are all very respectable. Such a relaxing and positive environment. They have many great campsites for tents or RVs or car camping.

      Cotton wood lakes

Wow ! A lush forest surrounding beautiful Cottonwood lakes 1 &4 great fishing access good for kayak / small boats . (Many other lakes in the area)The rain storms were pretty intense ,so much standing water we could not find a good place to camp dry camping no hookup. Plus the fact we were camping on a weekend the camp grounds were full by Saturday afternoon. We had to opt for basically a trail head parking lot are to setup and wait out the storms. In two days we had 4 hours to get out and fish and walk around the area . The side by side and four wheelers were not deterred by the rain storms zipping up and down the roads, so expect lots of noise and activity in the area of the lakes.Due to the intense storms we were not able to explore as much as we would have liked other than that absolutely beautiful lush forest.

      Quiet and Clean

This a great spot in a pretty state park. The Pioneer campground is down a gravel road and has views of the reservoir. Lots of deer. Not much privacy between sites in the area I was in. Could not locate showers in my campground either. Maybe the showers are at one of the other campgrounds nearby within the park.

      Love the space!

The campsites here are well spread out and right on the water. We found we had privacy and still had great hiking spots near by. May need a car that has AWD if you’re going up the hill to more dispersed spots as we had difficult in our smaller car. It was one of our favorites!

      Oasis in the Desert

I typically visit this campground a few times per year on mountain biking trips. The grass fields and trees are unique in that most desert camping is spent sand out of all your nooks and crannies. The showers are a bonus after long days in the saddle.

Pioneer Campground — Vega State Park

      Great Experience

Pioneer Campground was a great place to camp. We used a walk-in tent site. The trail for the sites was clear, clean, and the sites were the same. Bathroom was clean and did not smell at all, water from the spigot was clean and cool. Most sites were nicely shaded to provide privacy, but the one we stayed in had a beautiful view of the lake. The tent platforms were raised which was helpful. Bug spray is necessary as mosquitos are pretty rampant in June-July.
