Stunning views!

Always a beautiful hike around this area. Just a few miles up from the hessie trailhead, its definitely a bumpy ride that I recommend having a high clearance vehicle for. On beautiful days finding parking can be tough as everyone is out trying to enjoy the views at once. Had my first date here, and we were lucky to catch a view of a waterfall and a view of the galaxies at night. Great place to be and enjoy nature! If you're up for a mega hike there's also a glacier up the Fourth of July trail.

Beautiful and Challenging

I backpacked into this campground in early June. Unfortunately it was still very snowy on the last mile of the hike in which made it difficult to find the campsites at the lake. But it was a very very beautiful hike to the lake, delivering an even more beautiful view of the lake. We saw a moose along the way and passed many water features, wild flowers and scenic mountainous views. I do recommend having an off roading (or at least high suspension) car for the 4 mile dirt road that brings you to the Fourth of July trail head to start. I will definitely be going back.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hiking trails are accessible from Fourth of July Campground?

From Fourth of July Campground, you can access several beautiful hiking trails in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area. The main trail system connects to the Hessie Trailhead network, offering routes of varying difficulty around the alpine lake and into the surrounding mountains. These trails provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, including moose sightings. In early season (June), portions of the trails may still be snow-covered, which can make navigation challenging but rewards hikers with less crowded experiences. The area is particularly popular during summer months when wildflowers are abundant.

Is there camping available at Fourth of July Trailhead?

Yes, camping is available at the Fourth of July Trailhead area, but it requires backpacking into designated sites rather than camping directly at the trailhead parking area. The actual campsites are located around the lake after hiking in from the trailhead. During peak seasons, the parking area can fill up quickly, so arriving early is recommended. Be prepared for potential snow conditions in early June which can make finding the campsites challenging.

How does Fourth of July Campground compare to Buckingham Campground?

Fourth of July Campground and Buckingham Campground are actually the same location, commonly referred to by both names. This campground offers beautiful alpine scenery with lakeside sites that provide stunning views. It's a backcountry camping area that requires hiking in, making it less crowded than developed campgrounds but requiring more preparation.
