Redwood enthusiasts and river lovers will find Richardson Grove State Park Campground positioned directly along Highway 101, where towering coastal redwoods create natural canopies over spacious sites. The Eel River flows just across the road, offering swimming holes and day-use areas accessible via short trails. Campers can explore multiple hiking paths of varying difficulty levels throughout the park's 1,000 acres of old-growth forest.
The campground accommodates both tent campers and RVs up to 30 feet, with sites featuring fire pits, picnic tables, and bear boxes. Each site provides considerable space and separation from neighbors, though the proximity to Highway 101 means consistent road noise. "Clean campsites spaced apart reasonably with picnic tables and fire pits," notes Ross F.. The park maintains flush toilets and coin-operated showers that reviewers consistently describe as well-maintained.
Summer brings peak crowds and mosquitoes, particularly around the river access points. The park offers Junior Ranger programs and amphitheater presentations during busy seasons. Swimming in the Eel River requires caution due to currents, and water shoes help navigate rocky sections. Poison oak grows along some river trails, requiring attention when hiking to water access points.
Reservations are available through the state park system, though walk-up sites may be found during weekdays and shoulder seasons. Firewood costs $10 per bundle, and the $35 tent site fee reflects standard California state park pricing. Dogs are welcome in the campground but prohibited on hiking trails within the park boundaries.
For campers wanting additional forest camping options, nearby alternatives include the Oak Flat Lower Section (77-120, 166-170) - Richardson Grove State Park, which offers a different setting within the same redwood ecosystem.
