Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA offers various cabin options within walking distance of the beach. Basic cabins provide heaters, beds with pads, and proximity to shared bathrooms with showers. More deluxe accommodations include additional amenities and furniture. All cabin sites have picnic tables and fire rings with grills. Clean facilities are maintained throughout the property, with impeccably maintained restrooms and shower buildings. "The basic cabin was just that, but spacious and the heaters worked very well. Nice, well kept campground with plenty of activities and access to a coastal trail," notes one camper about their stay.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are available throughout the Point Arena region, with several locations offering year-round availability. Hendy Woods State Park Campground provides cabin accommodations nestled among redwoods, while other properties like Jughandle Creek Farm offer more secluded options. Most cabins are pet-friendly with appropriate fees, though policies vary by location. Reservations are essential, particularly during summer months when occupancy rates are highest. A visitor mentioned, "Senior camping at its best. A heated cabin and pad on bed that was comfortable. Got showers and a family vibe. Great location for scouting Mendocino coastline and Point Arena."

Most cabin rentals provide beds with basic mattresses but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and towels. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between properties - from simple fire pits with grills to fully equipped camp kitchens with microwaves, stoves, and refrigerators. Manchester Beach KOA features a large community kitchen with multiple electric stoves, sinks, and microwaves for guest use. Basic supplies can be purchased at on-site stores at larger properties like KOAs, while smaller state park cabins typically require bringing all provisions. Nearby towns offer grocery stores and hardware shops for additional supplies.

Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA

Delightful, quiet campground in the pines not far from Mendocino

Normally I wouldn't think of myself as a KOA sort of camper. This campground is enough to change my mind! There are some weekends you need to get away, but there's no time to pack the long list of stuff needed for camping. So we tried out one of these little cedar cabins. It was fantastic!!

We loved the quiet, laidback campground, with lovely old pines giving a sense of being in the forest -- even while being walking distance from the water. You're literally close enough to hear the surf, and see the Point Arena lighthouse.

It's dog friendly, with pool, hot tub, hot showers, full bathrooms, and also extensive Camp Kitchen facilities with sho-nuff gas grills.

      We absolutely plan to return!

      Quiet, fun, relaxing

We rented a camping yurt and we were so surprised how big it is! We received a key to our own bathroom and shower! They had a sink to was dishes in and a place to clean our fish. We rented a motor boat for a few hours to explore the beautiful lake.  Pet friendly. Great little beach. A dock to fish from. Everything you need to have a great time! They also have bigger yurts and cabins to rent. Also, RV parking .We have already booked another visit.

Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA

      Very Nice KOA

The beach is about a mile hike, you can ride your bike though on the road outside the KOA or drive and the beach is closer. Point Arena lighthouse is a close drive away. There is an Ace Hardware about a 2 mile drive so that’s convenient. The WiFi is super spotty and we honestly couldn’t join it. The pool is nice and heated, they do have a spa but it was closed because of Covid. Staff was super nice too. The closest town doesn’t really have anything open but a small grocery store.

      Always a good time

My wife’s family has been going here for over 30 years. It’s a family RV & cabin campground with a lot of great amenities. The new owners (5 years now) are very friendly and helpful making the whole experience a stellar visit.

      Hendy Woods State Park Campground

      Family Freindly Redwood Camping

Spacious sites with fire pit, wooden food box and picnic table. Potable water available at spigots along the roads every 3-4 campgrounds. The campground has restrooms with sinks (bring your own soap), flush toilets, coin operated showers. Campground ha easy access to hiking, swimming in the river, and wine tasting just up the road. There a local produce stands just up the road where you can expect to buy tasty Gravenstien apples if you visit in August! Mosquitoes are present so bring bug spray! If you forget anything, there is a Mom and Pop store up the road that sells almost everything you need including batteries, tableclothes, butane, ice and firewood for about $6 a bundle. The campground host sells firewood for $8 a bundle. Campsites are for 8 people maximum. Even with 8 people, we didn't feel cramped. Sites come with 2 parking passes. If you have more than two cars in your party, you can pay for additional parking passes. Dog friendly! I was the only person in my group to have cell service here and I have Verizon.

      Jughandle Creek Farm

Perfectly secluded and right next to the beach.

Jughandle is a beautiful area between Mendocino and Fort Bragg. It contains excellent hiking, a beautiful beach, and even a Pygmy Redwood Forest. I booked it through Hipcamp and you could tell that was the majority of their campers.

We were able to score a site that was very secluded at the end of the road before the private property line. It was the perfect spot to set up two(or more) tents. There was a great fire ring and picnic table at the site.

A short less than a minute walk to the porta potty bathroom that is at the edge of a big field. In the field are two more sites on either side of the road and a large communal cooking area with a water source.

There is also a large fire ring with stump seats in case you want to have a gathering. The sites were pretty quiet even when they were all full and you were able to get to your site without distracting others too much.

There is a hiking path that takes you down to Jughandle Beach where you will find all kinds of tourists, animals, and great sand to play in or up to the pygmy redwood forest.

      Pine Mountain Lookout

      A Unique Experience

A simple, rustic cabin.  As noted by others, it suffers from a little damage/neglect—many of the windows are boarded up—but it's an old fire lookout so we didn't expect a rental cabin atmosphere.  Views are exceptional, as is the peace and quiet.  Get up early and you'll catch the dawn chorus of an amazing number of birds: warblers, woodpeckers, quail, juncos, grosbeaks, cowbirds, even robins.  The cabin is roughly outfitted with cots, bunkbeds, a table and chairs.  There's a clean outhouse down by where you park and a firepit, which we didn't use because it was windy when we were there.  Keep your food up on the table at night--the mice are nocturnal visitors and will help themselves if you leave food on the counter.  Only caveat is the access to the cabin.  They're not kidding when they warn you to bring a chainsaw.  Two of the three roads in and out were blocked by downed trees (so big our small chainsaw wasn't helpful), and in places the road that was open had pretty deep potholes and gullies formed by last winter's heavy rains.  I was really glad we had 4WD.

    Guide to Point Arena

Cabin camping options near Point Arena, California range from basic shelters in state parks to deluxe accommodations with hot tubs and family amenities. The coastal region averages 40-60 inches of annual rainfall, with most precipitation occurring between November and March. Summer fog often blankets the coast until midday, creating cooler temperatures than inland areas, while fall typically offers clearer skies and milder conditions.

    What to do

Water activities at beaches: Within a mile of Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA, campers can access coastal trails and swimming spots. "The beach is about a mile hike, you can ride your bike though on the road outside the KOA or drive and the beach is closer. Point Arena lighthouse is a close drive away," notes one visitor.

Wine tasting excursions: The Anderson Valley wine region surrounds Hendy Woods State Park Campground, making it ideal for Pinot Noir enthusiasts. "Great campground in the Anderson Valley. Anderson Valley is a Pinot Noir region so wineries surround the campground. Booneville is a cute nearby town with kid friendly Anderson Valley Brewery and Pennyroyal Cheese Farm," shares a camper.

Mushroom photography: Late winter and early spring offer unique photography opportunities. A camper explains, "I always come to Hendy Woods with my camera, especially in the late winter, early spring to do some mushroom photography. So much to see here!"

    What campers like

Warm pools: Several cabin campgrounds maintain heated swimming pools even during cooler weather. "The pool is so clean and warm, we were told it was 85°, and I believe it. The sites are all decent sizes," reports a visitor at Manchester Beach KOA.

Community kitchens: Full cooking facilities enhance cabin stays for those who prefer not to cook outdoors. "This KOA has large tent sites and a HUGE kitchen with 3 electric stoves and several sinks and microwaves for camper use," reports one camper about Manchester Beach KOA.

Ancient redwoods: Caspar Beach RV Park & Campground offers unique forest-to-shore proximity. "A forest of trees right across the street from the crashing surf. Lovely! It has a wonderful tent camping area back away from RV's in the Redwoods and many other trees," writes one visitor.

    What you should know

Cell coverage varies significantly: Connectivity depends on location and carrier. At Thousand Trails Russian River, one visitor reported, "No Verizon service in the campsite and limited to no Verizon service for about 1/2 mile out of the campsite." Meanwhile, Hendy Woods offers better service: "I always have a little bit of service (Verizon) at the campground."

Winter access changes: Seasonal bridge removal affects travel times to some properties. "Getting to the campground is easier in the summer because there is a bridge that goes over the river, making it a shorter drive. In the winter, the bridge is removed, so you have to go through the town of Cloverdale and back track, adding about 15-20 minutes to your trip."

Shower tokens required: Many state parks and private campgrounds use token-operated showers. At Clear Lake State Park, "The showers are token operated. Outside the bathrooms is a machine for token exchange. It takes $1 and $5 bills. They are these cute, unique coins specific to the park. Apparently lots of California state parks use tokens and you can 'collect them all.'"

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort offers extensive facilities for children. "We stayed in one of the premium hot tub sites, where you get your very own hot tub. Highly recommend, my kids absolutely loved it and so did I! We were just a few steps from the pool... The splash pad was a family favorite. The petting zoo was also super cute and the animals seemed like they were well taken care of."

Junior ranger programs: State parks often offer educational activities. "The junior ranger program and nightly events for families helped keep the kids engaged in the camping experience. Park rangers hosted guided hikes, nighttime stargazing (with telescopes), and nightly campfires."

Movie nights: Evening entertainment comes standard at many cabin campgrounds. One visitor to Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort reported, "We arrived early evening as camp activities were getting underway, setting up to the soundtrack of Beetlejuice showing nearby."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection challenges: Casini Ranch Family Campground offers varying site quality. "One tip for those towing trailers... the campground loop roads are not one way. Make sure to figure which direction to approach for the easiest backup."

Hardware-grocery combinations: Local shopping options combine unusual merchandise. "There is an Ace Hardware about a 2 mile drive so that's convenient. The WiFi is super spotty and we honestly couldn't join it. The closest town doesn't really have anything open but a small grocery store."

Elevation concerns: Site conditions can damage vehicle undercarriage. "Some spots are inclined in a way that your hind end may really scrape the ground/asphalt. There are grooves in the road everywhere it is common."
