Seems nice, but no access to Sunset Crater

Contrary to the last review, access to Sunset Crater National monument is not possible via the back entrance. The road to this site states that at the beginning and we verified (by driving around) that the fence on the side of s Sunset Crater is closed. Not a through road. We ended up camping not here, but at the far side of Sunset Crater along the O'Leary peak loop (not listed, and app doesn't allow me to add it). That is a beautiful spot!

Open Space and Easy Access

We did car camping up here and pulled in in the middle of the night. Everything is an OHV area off the main road so you can travel anywhere. We didn’t hear any other vehicles the whole night. Made it to sunset crater the next day which you can access from the back side of you keep going through the OHV area.

Dusty and crowded

Came towards the end of Memorial Day weekend and it was fun to see the RVs go by but the dust was too much for us.

Dirty and Noisy

The location is very dusty, dirty, and Noisy. Any size rig can access the location but if you like the dust and noise, have at it. Verizon is not good either.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Cinder Hills OHV area located in Arizona?

Cinder Hills OHV area is located near Flagstaff, Arizona. It's positioned close to Sunset Crater, which you can access from the back side of the area if you continue through the terrain. The area consists of volcanic cinder hills, creating a distinctive black soil landscape. Its proximity to Flagstaff makes it a convenient recreational destination for both locals and visitors exploring northern Arizona's outdoor spaces.

Is dispersed camping allowed at Cinder Hills near Flagstaff?

Yes, dispersed camping is allowed at Cinder Hills near Flagstaff. The area offers tons of open space for camping, with no designated sites or facilities. Vehicles of any size can access the location, making it suitable for both tent camping and RVs. There are no formal boundaries - you can set up camp virtually anywhere off the main road as the entire area permits dispersed use. No reservations are required, and camping is free.

What is the best time of year to visit Cinder Hills camping area?

The best time to visit Cinder Hills camping area is during spring and fall when temperatures are moderate and the area is less dusty. Summer can be pleasant due to Flagstaff's higher elevation, but holiday weekends like Memorial Day tend to be very busy with increased OHV activity and dust. Winter brings colder temperatures and potential snow at this elevation. If you're sensitive to dust or prefer quieter camping, consider weekdays rather than weekends regardless of season, as the volcanic cinder soil creates significant dust when disturbed by vehicles.

The entire area off the main road is open to OHV use, allowing riders to travel virtually anywhere within the boundaries.
