Frequently Asked Questions

What types of camping are available at Stoneman Lake?

Stoneman Lake offers primitive camping with just three designated campsites. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table for comfortable outdoor dining. The campground features basic amenities including vault toilets and trash collection facilities. While limited in number, these sites provide a peaceful setting with views overlooking the lake. Dispersed camping may be available in surrounding areas, but visitors should check current regulations with forest service officials before setting up camp outside designated areas.

Where is Stoneman Lake located in Arizona and how do I get there?

Stoneman Lake is located in north-central Arizona at an elevation of approximately 6,800 feet. The campground is easily accessible off Interstate 17, making it a convenient destination for travelers. It's situated on the west side of the lake, offering beautiful overlook views of the water. The higher elevation makes it about 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix, providing a refreshing escape during warmer months.

Are there any fire restrictions at Stoneman Lake?

Fire restrictions at Stoneman Lake vary seasonally based on weather conditions and forest fire danger levels. As the campground is located at 6,800 feet elevation in a forested area, fire safety is taken seriously. Always use the designated fire rings when available at the campsites. Before your trip, check with the Coconino National Forest for current fire restrictions, which may range from limiting fires to designated rings to complete bans during high-risk periods. Always fully extinguish any campfires and never leave them unattended.

Can you fish at Stoneman Lake and what species are available?

Yes, fishing is available at Stoneman Lake. The campground overlooks the lake on its west side, providing convenient access for anglers. While specific fish species information isn't detailed, Arizona lakes in this region typically contain trout, bass, and catfish depending on the season and water levels. The lake's higher elevation (6,800 ft) creates a different fishing environment than lower-elevation Arizona waters. Be sure to have a valid Arizona fishing license and check with Arizona Game and Fish Department for current regulations, stocking information, and seasonal considerations.
