Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area Campground

    Beauty abounds

The entire Mallard loop has generous paved sites. There is a picnic table and nice fire pit. Plenty of paved space to set up. Pines surround each site and provide ample shade. Each site has easy access to the lake. The bathrooms have showers and were spotless.

Good spot for a night - convenient

Stayed here overnight to visit the Petrified Forest National Park.

Staff was friendly and helpful. The "cowboy" breakfasts and dinners are simple friendly events, although I didn't eat there.

Lots are standard RV set-ups, all right next to each other. Lot was fairly level, but still needed from front/back leveling even in my small van. Gravel driveways, gravel lots.

Laundry had about 5-6 washers and the same number of dryers.

This location is near a highway that is busy all night. You are not right on the highway, but the steady sound of cars and trucks can be heard all night. Not super loud, but not peaceful either.

Wifi was slow and inconsistent. Even though I was right by the main building, my connection sometimes said "unable to connect, try moving closer", or just wouldn't connect, or if it did, was unusably slow. Verizon wireless was great though (about 10mb).

I'd stay again for a convenient overnight.

    Awesome site, but…….

Beautiful, huge site! Sites were well spaced. Very quiet campground. The camp host didn’t bother us at all. She was around, just not intrusive. Now the bad. I have been camping in primitive sites for the last 20 years or more. In all those years I have never come across pit toilets as bad as the ones at this campground. We arrived Sunday night. They were really bad, but it was the end of a weekend so I gave grace. On Tuesday the toilets were “cleaned “ out. It didn’t help because no one put chemicals in the pit. The smell of raw sewage was always present in our site.

    Holbrook/Petrified Forest KOA

    Convenient and Secure

My first KOA—pricey for a tent spot (car camping) with a small shared area and limited tables. Tent spots are in view of noisy I40. I did feel safe here, considering the KOA branding, and liked the shorter drive to PFNP. Facilities are nice, otherwise, with close bathhouses and a sweet little chuckwagon serving breakfast and dinner.

    Fr 171 Campground

FR171 is one of my favorite spots.

Has 48 spots to camp. Some are great for rv, and some are very rocky. The road along sites are rv friendly. We spent 14 days in July and 20 days total. August went back for 12 days. September, it rained once every day.

    Quiet stary night

Great overnight stop after a visit through The Petrified Forest. Location awesome. We went to the area through the gate past the sheltered electric camp spots. There were cement pads as well in the fenced area. We positioned our trailer to block the light from the Crystal shop so we could photograph the milky way. Felt very safe.

The Crystal shop opens at 8am. Bought a few affordable crystals, friendly and knowledgable staff. A few photo opps with old cars weighed down with petrified rocks.

Numbered free camp sites. First come first served. Beautiful cool high country with many overlooks over the rim. There is a lake near by for fishing, has a small store and you can rent kyaks and small boats.

Camp sites are not near each other, but within sight. Campfires allowed when conditions permit. We stayed 3 nights while on our way home with our new R-Pod 192 Hood River Edition. We will definately go back again. The guy who came buy later to check us in was super nice and very informative.

Very large CG, mostly full timers

Very large CG with full hookups, level sites, flush toilets and showers. Casino and its restaurants next door. Wild horses venture through the camp in the evening! Spots are pretty close together, it is very full and mostly full timer/long term campers. Staff was helpful and courteous. We did not have a reservation until that morning. It is very busy so advance reservations are the norm. casino offers first timers a players pass with $6 for food and $5 casino credit.

    Enjoyable

The City try’s is best to keep it clean and so do the camps host as we saw both city works and the host walking around picking up trash is a nice little weekend trip for dry camping. The camp host are from Winslow so they are very knowledgeable about the area and very nice and willing to help no matter the circumstances. They do have bathrooms but no showers as they are out of order. Camp sites are right by the water for good fishing or you can park up above if you do not like bugs as they are worse down by the water than on the upper campsites.

Nice location if coming to Holbrook AZ

Great proximity to the Petrified forrest NP. Campsites were wide and level. Nice amenities include the chairs, table and fire pit. It also had a fair amount of privacy. Nice experience. Staff were. friendly and helpful.

The power did go out with 102F. The staff restored power and came around to all campsites with the status, Much appreciated.

    Beat the Heat

I wanted to get out of the southern Arizona heat. This place did just that. Only the opposite side of the highway of Woods Canyon Lake and Willow Springs Lake. Both are just a 15min drive. Plenty of room for big rigs (40’+). I brought my 37’ Motorhome and had no problem finding a big enough site. Sites are marked and plenty spread out from other campers. Great views and perfect summer weather.

    Spread out sites

Just under 50 sites off the dirt road. All sites have fire rings and are numbered. There were fire restrictions during my stay so definitely look into that beforehand, as with any other place. The sites were nicely spread out. The first few sites were along the rim. The others were within forested areas, well off the dirt road.

    Holbrook/Petrified Forest KOA

    Never disappoints

We live in the Phoenix area, and we use this KOA as a launching off point for trips to the East. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The grounds are well maintained. We were assigned spot #58 which is a big spot with a paver patio, furniture and a firepit. It also has privacy fencing on each side and full hookups. With our KOA discount it was $81.83. This was our first time with this large of a spot. Next time, we will go back to a regular spot again for a better price. The location is just off Interstate 40 which makes it convenient, but you can hear some of the freeway noise and an occasional train. They serve a delicious breakfast with a good variety that has an all you can eat pancake option for only $3.99. There is also a Cowboy Cookout every night. They are making more improvements to the grounds. Some spots will have a private enclosed patio with a gazebo and fire pit. For dog owners, there are some spots with your own enclosure, but those are hard to get. There is a dog run as well as a designated dog walking area with trees and trash cans.

    OK RV Park

    An OK RV Park

We stayed one night in order to visit the Petrified Forest National Park. It was a typical RV park with tight sites, but they do a pretty good job of placing the rigs so you are not looking in your neighbor's windows We are the Class B van in the photo. The staff were very friendly and making a reservation was easy. The bathrooms were clean (but dated). The sloped floor in the shower was pretty noticible and may give those with balance issues a challenge. The laundry area was clean and reasonable ($2 wash and about $2 for dryer). We needed to level on the gravel site. Quiet, clean, RV park and worth the price. I may try the KOA in Holbrook next time just to compare, but I think this one was supposed to have less road noise.

    Christopher Creek

    Lovely creekside stay

We stopped at Christopher Creek in April because the campsites we had planned to go to by the Mogollon Rim were still closed (snow). We snagged a FCFS creekside campsite mid-week and the campground was basically empty! It was beautiful and peaceful. Vault toilets were OK. Drinking water available. There is only one trail from the campsite that runs along the creek. The trail from the campground is (across the creek) pretty short, but you can cross the bridge back to the first loop and go further along the creek. It isn't a maintained trail so you have to look for it a bit. We had a view of the Mogollon Rim from our campsite that really showed up as the sun was setting. It was pretty great! Limited hiking from the campground is why 4 stars instead of 5. Also, this is not a place for big rigs. Very tight quarters in the loop we were in. The sites are basically wide spots in the road.
