COE Walter F George Lake White Oak Creek Campground

    Beautiful campground with great sites

Stayed December 2019 for a long weekend. The sites are all very nice with fire ring, lantern pole, picnic table, small counter height table, and concrete pad for your camper or tents. Ample additional parking available. Bathrooms were well maintained. We stayed in the Oakwood loop. River Chase loop has the best playground. Staff were very friendly. Several dump stations as well as a dog park. Would like some more hiking trails.

    Lakepoint Resort State Park Campground

    Great stay in winter

We stayed at this campground in a pull through site in February on our cross-country adventure. Plenty of room for big rigs. Easy to navigate roads. Safe for kids to ride around on bikes for hours. Site are big and the one we were at backed up on woods. Great view of the lake and sunset.  Lots of beautiful space to explore in the park, even in the chilly weather. Will definitely have to come back in the Spring!

    Frank Jackson State Park Campground

Small, Alabama State Park, in Opp

Arrived at guard gate and was welcomed by friendly staff. Quiet campground with waterfront site 8. Plenty of space between sites. FHU, level gravel, waterfront site with picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Felt safe, and across the street from bathrooms/laundry. Dated but clean. Woman’s bathroom with showers & bathroom stalls. 2 washers & dryers, as well as a folding table. No dog park, but plenty of nature, paved roads for walking, as well as easy to find, marked trails. 10 minutes to town, with restaurants and a few stores to pick up groceries & necessities. Playground is on the other side of the trails, as well as the boat ramp. Lots of wildlife. Would stay here again!

    CampOut Alabama

    Run down and misleading website

After reserving a"pull-through" site eight weeks in advance, we were told that we had been moved to an adjacent site upon arrival. No explanation was offered but after telephoning the owner in Chicago, the guy at the gate said we could have our original site after all and led us to it. One day later, neighbor campers arrived and we learned that they had also been booked into the site that we were in, however they had only booked four weeks earlier. Double booking is common apparently, and we learned that during a busy Halloween weekend, several guests had to be shuffled around to the permanent residents due to lack of space...including sleeping in cars. Although the site we booked was marked as a pull-through on the website, due to the location of the trees and the length of our pull-behind(28 ft), it was impossible to actually pull through, and we backed out of the site when it was time to leave. The tree cover is nice and shady, however several low hanging limbs make maneuvering difficult. We could not extend our awning fully without hitting a tree. Some sites have sewer hook-ups but the community dump station was closed. We were told to find an empty site that had sewer and just dump there. We had to move to two different sites to find a sewer hookup that worked. Many of the sewer ports are located on elevated ground when compared to the campsite, so the sewage is forced to flow up hill. Maneuvering this campsite is not easy. The map on the website is misleading and no in/out loop exists. What is marked as an outer road on the map is an overgrown dirt path now. Coupled with week cell service the available wi-fi only works inside of the clubhouse. Also, our 30 amp camp site could not support AC and a microwave for 30 seconds without tripping the breaker. With that said, the people we met were very nice, but we will never return.

    Deer Run RV Park

    Good Stop Over

Our GPS led us directly to the campground (CG) on US-231, conveniently located on the west side of Troy, AL. Check-in was quick and hassle-free. We stayed at site 60, which featured full hookups (FHUs) and a level cement pad with well-positioned utilities. Water pressure was high, so we used a reducer. The CG offers WiFi, but we couldn’t locate the guest network during our overnight stay. This wasn’t an issue, as we relied on our Starlink and T-Mobile home internet, which performed well despite just one bar on our phone. Verizon reception was also solid at three bars. The CG provides cable, which we didn’t use, but our camping friends in site 59 confirmed it worked well. The older section of the CG is shaded with mature trees, while the newer area has fewer, making it ideal for satellite users. Compared to our last visit a few years ago, the only noticeable upgrade was the addition of tiny houses near the office. The CG remains clean and well-maintained. One downside was the heavy traffic at our site from long-term residents returning from work, many of whom didn’t observe the speed limit. Deer Run also offers water and electric sites in the newer back section, which we plan to request for future short stays.

Guide to Clio

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Kelly Creek RV Park features a catch-and-release pond with a dock where guests can enjoy recreational fishing. "They even have a catch and release pond. Laundromat and private bathrooms were very clean too," notes a recent visitor.

Nature walks: Several parks offer walking trails through wooded areas and meadows. Kelly Creek provides paths along the creek through "some nice woods and a meadow," perfect for dog walking and wildlife spotting. One camper reported seeing "a turkey gobbler in the driveway when I pulled in. Owner says there are about 40 in the area and a few deer."

Seasonal fruit harvesting: Visit during fall to experience unique local agriculture. One camper at Kelly Creek mentioned the property includes "a persimmon orchard but I missed harvest season. Persimmons are ripe October-December. Owner has 230 Japanese persimmon trees."

What campers like

Peaceful environment: Walnut Creek RV Park receives consistent praise for its tranquil setting. "The park is quiet, safe, and well maintained, and the staff were helpful and friendly," reports one camper. Another mentioned, "Beautiful place! Super quiet love the pond very clean."

Site quality: Deer Run RV Park offers concrete pads with strategic utility placement. "We stayed at site 60, which featured full hookups and a level cement pad with well-positioned utilities," noted one visitor. Some parks offer premium sites with additional amenities as one camper described: "the other sites are $40 with a patio and outdoor wrought iron tables and chairs."

Convenient locations: Most parks are strategically positioned near highways while minimizing road noise. One Kelly Creek visitor appreciated that it's "a mile off the hwy so it's so quiet." Another noted it's "easy, quiet, not crowded, great WIFI and the owners are here and hands on."

What you should know

Highway noise concerns: While some parks maintain distance from highways, others experience significant traffic noise. A Deer Run visitor mentioned, "The only thing that dropped a star was the sounds from the highway was absolutely overwhelming. It was so loud we had a hard night sleeping."

Military helicopter activity: Engineer Beach RV Park on Fort Rucker has a unique consideration. "I definitely recommend this campground as long as you don't mind the helicopters going over at all hours of the day and night," advised one military family.

Water pressure variations: Several parks have notably high water pressure. One Deer Run camper specifically advised, "Water pressure was high, so we used a reducer." This is common across multiple RV parks in the region and worth planning for.

Tips for camping with families

Recreation options: Several parks provide family-friendly amenities. "There is a small park with a swing set, teeter totter, and basketball hoop," mentioned a visitor at Engineer Beach RV Park. Other parks feature horseshoes and cornhole games for family entertainment.

Swimming opportunities: Dogs and children can enjoy water activities at select locations. At Dothan RV Park, one camper noted upgraded facilities: "All sites have been upgraded to level concrete with full hookups." Some parks allow pets to swim in designated ponds when not being used for fishing.

Grocery planning: Limited on-site stores mean advance planning is necessary. "Bring groceries and ice as there is no campstore. Dollar General is next door but they are out of ice. Walmart is less than a mile with plenty of dining options within a minute or two," advised a Dothan RV Park visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Older sections often provide more shade while newer areas offer better satellite reception. A Deer Run visitor observed, "The older section of the CG is shaded with mature trees, while the newer area has fewer, making it ideal for satellite users."

Self-registration convenience: Some parks offer flexible check-in. At Rosemont RV Park, campers report: "We were asked to call about an hour out, which we did and were warmly greeted by the onsite campground manager upon arrival." Kelly Creek has a similar system where "the owner just said pull in a pick the spot you like then you can pay with a cc or cash."

Winter season advantages: Off-peak winter stays offer less crowded conditions throughout the region's RV campgrounds. Clio, Alabama's mild winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing for extended periods, making year-round camping viable with proper preparation.
