Anglers and hikers find Coleman Lake Recreation Area tucked into the Talladega National Forest, where a small lake anchors 39 developed sites plus overflow camping options. This Forest Service facility operates from March through December on a first-come, first-served basis, drawing families and outdoor enthusiasts to its lakeside setting.
The main camping loops feature water and electric hookups for $16 per night, with sites positioned relatively close together among the trees. Raymond notes the "overflow area is more spacious and private" at $6 per night, offering primitive sites with fire rings but no hookups. Several reviewers mention sites like #7 and #30 provide direct lake access, with some campers finding paths leading straight down to the water.
Lake activities center on fishing and non-motorized boating, with trolling motors permitted on the water. A hiking trail circles the lake, though Brian and Janet S. describe it as "poorly marked" but suggest to "just follow the lake." The day-use area includes a beach section and playground for families. Campers consistently praise the facility's cleanliness, with flush toilets, hot showers, and well-maintained restrooms throughout the campground.
Access requires careful navigation, as GPS systems may route drivers over rough mountain roads. Multiple reviewers recommend using Highway 78 instead of County Road 500 or Dugger Mountain Road, particularly when towing. Cell service remains unavailable throughout the area, with the nearest reliable signal about six miles away. The campground host delivers firewood directly to sites and maintains the facility's reputation for cleanliness.
Plan for complete disconnection from cell networks and bring detailed maps for the most direct route via Highway 78.
