Lake Bob Sandlin State Park Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Fishing, swimming, kayaking, and lakeside hiking give Lake Bob Sandlin State Park Campground in Pittsburg, Texas a full recreational calendar across its roughly 4.5 miles of easy, mostly flat trails. The kayak launch includes a slide to ease boats from the parking area down to the water, and from there paddlers can follow a winding canal out to the main lake. A fishing pier draws anglers of all ages, and the designated swim area comes with a playground nearby. The park sits within Lake Bob Sandlin State Park, managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, with sites available year-round.

Thick forest cover defines the character of the campground. Sites are generously sized and well-separated by dense brush, which creates privacy even on busier weekends. One reviewer noted that site 08 appears waterfront on the map but the vegetation is too dense for a water view, while sites 10 through 13 are the ones to request for actual lakefront access. Deer moving through campsites in the morning and raccoons making evening rounds are consistent reports. Store your food and trash securely. Overnight spider webs are another recurring detail worth knowing.

Cleanliness comes up repeatedly across reviews. Bathrooms are consistently described as clean and well-maintained, though shower stalls can fill up fast in the evenings. Early morning tends to be the quieter window. The park store carries ice and firewood, and donation-based firewood is sometimes available on-site. RVs up to 45 feet can be accommodated with full hookups. The coded entry gate closes after hours. Nearby alternatives include The Bluffs RV Park and Jack Guthrie Park to the west.

The park draws crowds during spring and summer, particularly for fishing. Weekday visits in fall or winter tend to be quieter, and one camper spent a full week mid-winter without seeing much traffic in their loop. Traffic noise from a nearby bridge carries across the campground during the day, so lighter sleepers should plan accordingly. Reservations are available and worth booking in advance for waterfront sites on weekends.

Many visitors appreciated the large, private waterfront sites and well-maintained facilities with helpful staff organizing engaging activities. Some noted occasional road noise and busy shower facilities during peak times, but most found it a great value for families.

Quiet and Shady

The park is well taken care of. The sites are level and have plenty of shade covering. This is especially important if you are in a pop-up like us. If you are, you know what I mean. It was a quiet campground. Bathrooms were clean. The entry gate is coded after closing for some added security. Will return.

Fun for the Second Year in a Row

We stayed in a screened shelter at Lake Bob Sandlin SP in Nov 2020 and in a cabin with bunk beds last weekend and both sites were great. We have four kids, so space was a little tight in the cabin but we made do. Clean facilities, friendly staff and beautiful rolling terrain along the lake. Would recommend!

Double bunk cabin was a hit

We loved fishing and hiking throughout the park but our kids loved the double bunks in our cabin. The campsite was great, right off the water and a well placed fire pit. We will definitely be back.

Great campsite

The park was great, very clean and the park rangers were very helpful.

The bathrooms weren’t the best but they were clean and had showers with hot water. There were only 3 shower stalls in the bathroom near us and they were very busy in the evening. They were completely empty at 7am though.

The atmosphere was fantastic! Great tall trees, oversized and private campsites.

Park store didn’t have a lot but did have ice and firewood for sale along with a few trinkets.

Overall, I would go back again

Amazing adventure at the Kayak Launch

Kayak launch isn’t easy to get to but the have provided a slide for yaks to get from the parking area to/from the launch. Once you’re there though its like you’re transported somewhere else and you weave your way through a winding canal to reach the lake (very cool). We all enjoyed it! Yaked over to the day-use swim area that was very nice. We can’t wait to go camping there!

Nice Cheap Gem

4.5 total miles of trails and none of it difficult. You can't take a baby stroller but obey because of a few branches, it's all easy hiking.

One bathroom but all the lits are spacious and secluded.

The lake is great. Beautiful swimming area and playground. We were here 7 days and only left once to hut Walmart (20 minutes)

Definitely 5 star, and only 18/night. Just as good as the 25/night Texas State Parks.

And as always, as a Texas State Park it is extremely safe. Park Police (actual police) are scene everywhere.

Oh, and everywhere it says no wifi and while it's true you can't log into a free network we had zero problems getting wifi on our phones and we were the only people in our loop being midweek during winter.

Lots of trees, lots of wildlife

First time to this park and we liked it. It is very thickly wooded which makes even the smallest sites private. We stayed on site 08 which on the map looks like it’s on the water but the brush is dense so there is no water view. Sites 10-13 are nice waterfront sites. We came here for fall colors but I think we were just a little late, but the park was still pretty. One morning, as I was sitting drinking my coffee, four deer walked right through our site!! We had a regular nighttime visit from some bold raccoons, so definitely put your goodies and trash away. Overnight spider webs cover everything and I’m quite sure we took a hundred spiders home with us!😂 The firewood from the park was plentiful and donation based. It was wet but my husband is a pyro who could probably start a fire with a block of ice!🤪 The only negative for me was the echo of the cars coming over the bridge throughout the day.

Very comfortable State Park Few Pull through

Great fun at Halloween- campers and community comes out in great numbers to decorate and trick or treat! Very fun. The decorations by campers is just as fun to explore as the trick or treaters costumes. Christmas is the same. Everyone outdoes the other with lights, special effects. Call ahead for a site. Bathrooms are clean.

Nice camp spot, but a bit flat

We did dispersed camping here while we still lived in Texas. The forest was nice, but hike in was not challenging at all, and short. Park gets busy during spring/summer for fishing at pond. Best parts of our trip was how the forest animals really came alive at night, and the clear starry sky. The out-house at the primitive sites was a luxury you don't usually get when camping that way. If you enjoy dispersed camping the way we do, this may not be the place for you. The regular campsites may be nicer here but we did not venture that way. Also, Texas March weather is perfect for camping. Good place for a quick get-a-way from the city.

SiteSites not numbered for primitive, just pick one and you're good!

The park is beautiful. It has large Rv sites with water and electricity. Many of the sites are waterfront. The staff were the best. Rangers put on a Dutch oven demonstration on for us. They also took us on an interpretive hike. The park is well maintained and very clean. They are also sponsoring a holloween event the last week in October. I am ready to go back, work awaits however.
