Right along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Mears State Park Campground sits directly across from the beach in what multiple campers describe as essentially a sandy parking lot arrangement. The campground occupies a prime lakefront position where tent sites require setup on sand rather than grass, creating challenges for staking down gear on windy days.
Site spacing runs extremely tight throughout the campground, with concrete pads described by reviewers as "very small" and rigs parked at "odd angles" when the facility reaches capacity. Melissa M. notes "Sites are very tight! In the summer months it's hard to even drive down the street." About five sites offer direct water views, while the remainder sit among sand dunes with easy climbs to lake access. RVs up to 40 feet can accommodate the electric and water hookups, though maneuvering larger rigs through the narrow drives proves challenging.
The beach location provides immediate access to Lake Michigan's shoreline, and campers can walk directly into downtown Pentwater for dining and shopping. Bathhouse facilities earn consistent praise for cleanliness, with Clay S. highlighting "Fantastic public restrooms and showers that didn't run out of hot water." WiFi reaches the sites but operates slowly when many users connect simultaneously. Firewood sells for $6 per bundle near the beach stands, accepting cash or Venmo.
The campground operates year-round with reservations strongly recommended, as availability disappears quickly during peak season. Fall camping offers somewhat more breathing room between sites, though the concrete pads remain compact. Most sites lack natural shade, making awnings or covered RVs advantageous for comfort during sunny weather. For campers wanting more space and privacy, Hill & Hollow Campground & RV Park provides a less crowded alternative northeast of town.
