Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

The sound of Cold River running through the lower loop is one of the first things campers notice at Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground, a DCR-managed site set within forested terrain along Route 2 in Charlemont. Sites along the water are the most sought-after, though reviewers consistently note they sit close together with limited brush between them. Weekday visits tend to be quieter; weekends draw larger crowds and more noise.

Bear activity is real here. Every site has a bear box, and rangers advise keeping food secured at all times. Flush-toilet bathrooms are distributed across the campground and cleaned twice daily according to multiple reviewers, though only two showers serve the entire facility. There is one dumpster on-site, located at some distance from most sites, so campers typically store trash in their vehicles between hauls. Cell service is limited or absent. Fires are permitted, and rangers sell firewood on-site.

Site selection matters at this campground. Ryan A. notes that sites near the bathrooms face light exposure all night, while sites at the end of the lower loop, such as 49, offer more darkness. Among the walk-in sites, number 22 is noted as the most private. Hike-in campers are provided wheeled baskets for gear transport. Hikers have direct trail access from camp, and the Cold River is accessible for swimming. Campers with RVs can take advantage of electric, water, and sewer hookups.

For those planning a longer stay in the area, camping near Mohawk Trail State Forest includes additional options, and Mohawk Park Campground & Restaurant is a nearby alternative with a different setup for campers wanting more amenities or spacing.

Campers regularly cited the beautiful riverside sites and well-maintained facilities as major draws. Several guests observed concerns about close site spacing, though most found the river sounds created a peaceful atmosphere.

Great little camp

We got a sit right on the river, so that adds to this. But this place is great, a river, hiking trails, no phone signal, what else could yoy ask for? Oh yeah clean bathrooms, and guess what, they have those too!

But honestly this place is great, the staff is the most friendly DCR staff I've met, the buildings are well kept, the sites a large! I'd gladly go back, and I am!

Great Campground in Western Mass

This is a great campground located off of highway 2 in western Mass. I stayed in site 51 and luckily the campground was mostly empty(it was on a Thursday though and was supposed to be full for the weekend.) Each campsite has a bear box and fire ring, there is easy access to hiking trails and flush-toilet bathrooms with sinks are located throughout. There is only one dumpster though and it’s a walk to get to – store your trash in your car or drive it each night, or enjoy the walk.

The campsites are very close together without much brush for privacy, so you should expect to see your neighbors up close and personal. Some of the sites are on Cold River(which is more like a creek). The bugs were awful, especially the gnats and I did see a large tick on my fire grill, so be prepared. The best sites are on the lower loop around the water. Avoid any site next to the bathroom as the lights stay on all night and will shine directly into your tent. 49 looked really nice and seemed dark. The hike-in sites were also close together, 22 is the most private. There are baskets with wheels provided.

The rangers are friendly and sell firewood in case you need any. You’ll need to check in before going to the campsite, they’ll give you a map and they take good care of the sites. Would definitely camp here again.

Don’t feed the shy bears!

This campground is peaceful and has sites that are well spaced. A number of them have proximity to each other but not to the rest of the sites, making for a great multi-family gathering. There are lots of black bears so keeping food in the near lockers or locked in the car at all times is a must!

Good clean campground

We just spent six days at site 31 and we really enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms were cleaned two times a day and the park is so well maintained. The sites were a little close and not very private, but if you go during the weekdays, as we did, this won’t be an issue. Weekends the park gets busy as can get a bit loud. The lower sites near the river are good sized and he river ambiance is nice. Biggest negative would be only two showers for the whole campground.

The staff was great. Very friendly and helpful. Will be visiting again.

Swim in the forest!

It is beautiful, lots of shade, and you can camp right beside the river!! Don't count on phone service, and no showers. The bathrooms were clean. Every site has a bear box to keep anything edible. Easy to find.

close sites, but the river is so close

The sites are extremely close when down by the river, but the view is awesome. The road is right across the street but you cannot hear it at all and it is covered by the trees and sound of the rushing water. They provide bear boxes for your things. If you are lucky, you can get the sites at the end of the loop for a little more privacy. There are many other camping options not along the water that allow a little more space per campsite. It was beautiful and great having running water to fall asleep to at night. There are also a lot of hiking trails that start right here!
