Sandstone ledges rising above the Des Moines River give this Iowa state park campground a topography that stands apart from the flat farmland surrounding it. Set within Ledges State Park, the campground draws campers who return year after year, many since childhood, drawn by the forested sites and the chance to explore the canyon road and lower ledges along the river. The terrain is genuinely hilly, with trails featuring stone steps and notable elevation changes that make for a more physically engaging hike than most central Iowa parks can provide.
Sites here are well-spaced and mostly level, with many offering shade and reasonable privacy from neighboring campers. Walk-in tent sites come equipped with fire rings and picnic tables, which surprises some first-time visitors. Hookup sites provide water, electric, and sewer connections for RVs. Cell coverage is reliable enough that at least one reviewer managed remote work via a Verizon hotspot. Wildlife is active, particularly raccoons after dark. Do not leave food unattended at night.
The Lower Ledges area is the campground's main draw for families. A stream crosses the road there, and kids wade in regularly during summer visits. A kayak launch sits off Lower Ledges Road, with calm water on the Des Moines River. Hikers can explore trails through the gorge, and a bike path reportedly connects the park to other destinations in the region. Tom S. notes the park has "an excellent trail" and appreciates the sandstone ledges and slopes that distinguish it from flatter Iowa parks.
Access to the lower section of the park can be rough, and the road has historically been subject to flooding. The lower ledges area has closed in past years due to high water, so checking conditions before arrival is worth the effort, especially in spring. The campground is open April through December, with fall drawing visitors for foliage and the full trail system. Nearby Swede Point Park provides an alternative if this campground fills on busy weekends.
Reservations are available and recommended for summer and holiday weekends, when tent sites and hookup spots both see heavy use. Nightly rates run $18 to $38 depending on site type. For campers passing through central Iowa who want more than a flat overnight stop, Ledges gives the landscape room to do some work.
Description
Millions of years before the plains of Iowa were inhabited by the Sauk, Fox and Sioux peoples, much of the American Midwest was covered by a shallow inland sea. It was at this time that the area’s sandstone deposits began forming. Fast-forward to just 13,000 years ago, with the inland sea now long gone, Ice Age glacial meltwater raced across the dry plains, carving and scouring channels and canyons into the sandstone terrain. One of these canyons can be found in Iowa’s Ledges State Park. This 1,000-acre nature preserve and recreation area is located on a wide bend on the Des Moines River, and is just 40 miles north of the city of Des Moines. The park is subject to frequent flooding when the river breaches its banks, but is otherwise a popular year-round outdoor recreation destination. Visitors to Ledges can enjoy a variety of hiking, fishing and paddling opportunities, as well as explore a prehistoric river canyon that showcases nature’s ability to sculpt the landscape.
The campground at Ledges State Park features 94 tent and RV sites situated among deciduous woods not far from the Des Moines River. Campers can choose from full-hookup, partial-hookup, or primitive tent sites. Most sites are back-in; only a few are pull-through for larger vehicles. Tent sites are located in both in the main camp area, and in a secluded walk-in area. There is also a youth group site. All sites are equipped with picnic tables, fire pits and cooking grills, and all have access to water faucets, flush restrooms, showers, and trash receptacles; a dump station is located near the campground entrance. The campground also features a kids’ playground, outdoor amphitheater, and is within walking distance of trails and picnic areas. Some roads and/or facilities may not be open or available in the winter. Reservations are accepted, however the park saves about half of the sites for first-come, first-served campers; sites are $11–$19/night.
