Reservations are available at this forested loop campground on the south side of Bald Eagle Lake, with sites running $16 to $18 per night and the season stretching from May through the third Sunday of October. The campground sits a short drive from the main park facilities across the lake, and reviewers consistently flag that the access road is rough in spots. Worth knowing before arrival: supplies are limited in the area, with no major grocery store nearby in Howard, so stocking up before reaching the park makes sense.
The layout is a one-way loop mixing tent and RV sites. Tent sites are set back from the road, reached by short paths through the woods, with parking left roadside. Casey L. describes each site as having "its own path back into the woods," with a picnic table, fire ring, and room for a tent. The fire rings include adjustable grill grates, and food-hanging hooks are present at some sites. RV sites have electric, water, and sewer hookups. Vault toilets are distributed around the loop in three locations and are generally reported as clean, though they carry the expected smell.
One detail that catches some campers off guard: an active railroad runs close to several of the lower sites. Trains have been reported as early as 5 a.m. and as late as 9 p.m. Midweek visits tend to be much quieter overall, with only a handful of sites occupied. Weekend stays bring more noise from neighboring campers. The Russell P Letterman Campground is the developed alternative on the north side of the lake, with more exposed sites but closer water access.
On the activity side, a roughly two-mile trail loops near the lake and campground. A boat launch is accessible from the primitive area. The main beach is on the opposite side of the lake, about a ten-minute drive, and is well-regarded for swimming. Fishing, kayaking, and biking are all viable from the park. Firewood is sold near the loop entrance for cash only.
Pets are allowed, and the walk-in tent sites give dog owners enough room to spread out. Erik C. notes the pond nearby has "lovely views" and recommends the beach across the bridge for swimming. Campers planning a longer stay in the region can also browse campgrounds near Bald Eagle State Park for additional options across the surrounding area. If the forested loop, walk-in sites, and lake access fit your plans, this campground gives you a solid base.
