Tie City Campground, near Laramie, Wyoming, is a fantastic spot for those looking to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying some peace and quiet. With well-placed sites surrounded by towering trees, it’s perfect for tent camping or RVs, though keep in mind there are no electric hookups.

This campground is known for its stunning views and proximity to the Happy Jack trail system, making it a hit with hikers and mountain bikers alike. Visitors have raved about the private spots and the beautiful scenery, with one camper noting, “The views were great and lots of trees around each spot.” 

Facilities include vault toilets and a hand pump for water, but you won’t find showers or dump stations here. Some campers have mentioned the occasional road noise from the nearby highway, but it doesn’t seem to bother most. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of local wildlife, as deer have been spotted around the area. 

Whether you're planning a weekend escape or a longer adventure, Tie City Campground offers a great base for outdoor activities and a chance to unwind under the stars. Just remember to be prepared for sudden weather changes, especially at this elevation!

## Overview

 Tie City Campground is comprised of 17 campsites in a single tear-drop loop. Some sites are nestled in a dense grove of aspen, fir, and spruce while others are in a grassy meadow. This campground will have a mix of reservation sites and first-come, first-served sites for the 2024 season. If you are not reserving your site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by cash or check once you are at the campground. 
## Recreation

 The Tie City trailhead leads to a network of challenging mountain bike trails, and is also used in the winter for cross country skiing. The South Fork of Lodgepole Creek runs close to the Tie City Campground and across the 719 road from Yellow Pine, which has good brook trout fishing. 
## Natural Features

 The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland encompasses nearly 3 million acres from central and northeastern Wyoming to north-central Colorado. Lodgepole pine, aspen, fir, spruce, and shrubs dominate the landscape of the national forests. The Grassland boasts numerous species of grasses and wildflowers that add color to the landscape during warmer months. Black bear, bobcat, coyote, elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and moose are just some of the many animals that inhabit these rich and diverse lands. 
## Nearby Attractions

 Vedauwoo Recreation Area is nearby. Vedauwoo is a group of spectacular granite rock formations rising out of the thin soils on Pole Mountain. The area is a popular destination for rock climbers, hikers, mountain bikers and others who enjoy numerous opportunities to follow their own spirit of play in this gorgeous natural landscape.

The Best Camping Near Laramie, Wyoming

We decided to head out of Colorado....I know right? And we ended up here for the night! Campsites are very spacious and clean. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table.

By complete accident we were up there for the perseid meteor shower! Great open view of the sky! Thoroughly enjoyed our little escape!

Last minute road trip

We had checked out three other camps in the area before trying this one. They were all full or lacked phone service which was necessary for me to submit some files.

We rolled through Tie City about 3:00 on a Friday and got the second to last spot left. It was a great spot. Not sure why it had been passed over, but we enjoyed it.

Saw two deer at the check in point. Friendly neighbors. Didn’t seem like many were “living there” like a lot of dispersed camps we drove through.

Lots of bear warnings, so we took lots of precautions. If they passed through in the night we didn’t notice.

AT&amp;T and Verizon service were solid...actually have line of sight to a tower.

It is close to the interstate and you could hear road noise, though I didn’t notice it until after dark. Wasn’t bad for me. Didn’t cause trouble for any of us sleeping.

Upon leaving I saw some had setup camp at the overflow parking for the trail. Not sure it is intended for that, but in a pinch I guess they made do.

4th choice turned out first rate

What a great campground. Very rustic with each site having its own fore ring and table. There were plenty of flat areas for trailers but I would argue that all sites are perfect for tent camping. It appears to be a great place for those who are into mountain biking as I felt I was the odd man out since nearly everyone had one and was riding.  I really enjoyed the peace and quiet and view of the stars!

  

I would most certainly visit this campground again. Close to the I-80 which makes it convenient.

Surrounded in Aspen & Mountains

For $10 a night it’s hard to beat. There is a huge system of bike trails you can ride on. The campsite has vault toilets and a hand pump for water, but no dump stations or hose connections for your rv. The roads are super tight and have large channels that water has cut through. Big rigs might have issues.

This is a great little campground situated right within the Happy Jack trail system. It used to be all FCFS which was great, but now some are reservable. There are 3 sites that are always FCFS now. Lovely pine forest surrounds with great recreation opportunities. You do hear a little bit of road noise from the highway which is a little suprising.

Amazing campground with amazing views and private spots! I arrived on a Saturday afternoon and there were several spots open. By the end of the day there were still several open spots and no one around me. The views were great and lots of trees around each spot. I will definitely come back if I’m in the area again!

Amazing Place!

This is a quiet place to camp, and most of the sites are well placed and nice.  The campsite itself was not extremely busy for a Friday night, but the nearby trailhead is extremely busy and people often drive/bicycle through the campsite.

Be warned:  this campsite is above 8,000 ft. In altitude and the weather may change suddenly, especially early or late in the season.  The night I was there, we had a 30 minute violent storm, complete with hail so thick you couldn’t see past the car (luckily I was in said car).  Nothing was damaged, and the following morning we had blue skies and sun.

While many of the sites are reservable, there are 6 sites at this time (June 21, 2024) that are first come first served (up, from the 3 in an earlier review).  This does give walk-ins a fair amount of choice.
