After the Wyoming Highway Department closes their gate for the winter the highway becomes a popular snowmobile trail. The Wyoming State Trails map shows over 300 miles of groomed and ungroomed trail. A new map is created each year. Other recreational opportunities in the area include cross country skiing on the trails behind the Barracks and sledding at the old Ryan Park Ski Area.

    Doesn’t honor discounts

The campground itself was fine for an overnight stay. Trailers not as close together as some right-off-the-highway campgrounds. But they refused to honor my discount program that was advertised as accepted. The woman at the desk said she couldn’t apply the discount because I didn’t”use” it when I booked online. Most campgrounds adjust fees when you arrive & show proof . Very disappointing. Watch out when you book.

    Wildflowers in June

The Dutch Hill Campground is north of the State Park Visitors Center on highway 62 in case you get there after hours as we did. We stayed at site 140 in the Wheeler loop. It was level and quiet with a tent pad a short distance away and a separate pad with a fire ring and picnic table. Bring a change of clothes as the mornings and evenings are chilly in June with warm short pant days. We had thunderstorms blow through most every day with 30+ mph winds possible. There is a store at the lake with basic provisions and there are restaurants and food stores down the road from the lake.

    Mountain star and lake views

Nicely separated sites. Superb view of Hawn’s peak. Depending upon chosen site, good views of lake or Hawn’s park. Site 42 just glimpses of lake. Campground was nearly empty mid week late September. Nice. Quiet. Level spots large tent pads. Heated flush restrooms and showers. Very limited T-Mobile. Very good star watching.

Clean restrooms, showers were really nice so was the laundry. We got there after a lot of rain and things were flooded and muddy. Hook ups are right next to your neighbors picnic table? No real place to walk your dog. Staff was very nice and friendly. Overall a good one night stop.

    Great overnight

This place was just what we needed. Bathhouse was spotless. Lots of hot water. The spots were nicely spaced. Not crowded at all. It's all gravel but hey, it's in the high Wyoming desert! $40 but got the Good Sam discount and that helped.

    Beautiful vistas and well maintained

We spent three nights here and loved it. There are many campsites on the edges of the campground loops that have trees and afford more privacy, but we were late in booking.  As it turned out, we had a great view and deer came through the meadow in the evenings.  Sites are level and well-maintained. The wildflowers were beautiful and the views of the lake and the mountains were gorgeous. There are nice hiking trails in the park and the lake looks like an awesome place for paddle boarding and canoes if you're into that sort of thing. A nice little beach for the kids, too. There are brand new showers in Harebell. The camp rangers and hosts were very helpful and pleasant.

Stunning lake, lots of beauty to see.

We visited this site in Hahns Peak for the first time, it is breathtaking with the scenery it offers. We were able to experience beautiful mountain scenery, have an easygoing time on our paddle boards, and experience the adventure of the trails. Friendly and helpful camp hosts, great environment. It is a popular campground, so you are likely to have several “neighbors”. Nothing wrong with a little company though!

Dutch Hill Campground — Steamboat Lake State Park

    Steamboat Lake in the Snow

We had reservations for site 184 in the Dutch Hill Campground for Memorial Day Weekend and we didn't let the forecast of snow and below freezing temperatures keep us away. It scared every other tent camper off and we had the walk-in loop to ourselves. The camp host called us his heroes for camping in that weather. Our site was fairly close to the parking lot and we don't pack light so we made a few trips with the provided wheelbarrow. The site had great views of the lake and a shelter that was necessary given the rain and snow. Note-not all sites had shelters. The vault toilet at the top of the loop was clean. Dumpsters were in a few places but not bear proof at all. Firewood was 9$ per bundle at the marina. Shower house was open and operational but we didn't pack for a shower so didn't use it. Overall, a great campsite-but not sure how it would've been if the weather hadn't kept the crowds away.
