      Overview

Summit Springs Guard Station is located a couple of miles off the Sheep Creek Geological Loop southwest of Flaming Gorge in the high Uinta Mountain Range. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the complex in 1931 as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. It was one of 11 guard stations built in the area to serve as homes for rangers who patrolled the forest on horseback prior to the modern age of vehicles. The complex includes the guard station, bunkhouse, parking area, and fenced yard. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Ashley National Forest has chosen to rehabilitate and rent this guard station and bunkhouse to the public so that guests can enjoy a rustic experience similar to that of the first rangers. It is available from mid-May through mid-September.

      Recreation

During the summer months, numerous hiking, biking, horse-riding, and ATV trails are found nearby. Fishing at Sheep Creek Bay, one of the "arms" of Flaming Gorge, is a short 12 mile drive.

      Natural Features

The facilities are located at Summit Springs, at an elevation of 8,278 ft. It is set in a rolling pasture, surrounded and interspersed with aspen and pine trees. Wildlife and summer flowers are abundant during the use season.

      Nearby Attractions

Flaming Gorge Recreation Area is known not only for its beautiful red cliffs, but also for its world -class fishing for lake, brown, and rainbow trout. Boating, water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and scuba diving are popular activities on the reservoirs. The dam is about 23 miles east of the complex. Sheep Creek Loop Scenic Backway (Geological Loop) is a 10 mile drive through spectacular canyon scenery and back in time. Millions of years of geologic history can be seen in a 20 minute drive, thanks to the Uinta Crest Fault and other rock features. The town of Manila is about 15 miles away, off the north end of Sheep Creek Loop where visitors can find grocery stores and other amenities.

      Tent camping

The site overseer Tony was helpful, and professional. The grounds maintained. The bathrooms well stocked, clean and offer good hot water pressure for showers. The tent site is large, grass and away from the RV sites. Definitely a spot we will stay again. Note the site offices close at 7pm. We had no reservations so you must arrive before 7pm. Our visit late late September 2024

      Overpriced old FS station

Ok, why would anyone pay $175-$285 a night to stay in old smelly FS bunkhouses that likely have a long history of housing mice, rats and racoons! The areas by the old cabins are not large enough to park many vehicles. Any camper with their own travel trailer or RV is going to camp anywhere on Ashley NF, including by a lake for free or a lot less. Likely why no one was staying there on the Utah pioneer day week. Not even close to a lake, just stuck in a dense shaded tree patch... No views even.

Great site ONLY of your there with a boat

This is a sectioned off section ofr the parking lot at the boat ramp where 4ish rvs can park/camp. While the camping isn't much, it is right at the boat ramp/launch which is super convenient. There are toilets. Very little shade.

      Annual Visit

By luck we found this site online when looking for campgrounds in the mountains. First year we went in July and the nights were perfectly chilly (dog water had a layer of ice on top by the a.m.). The sun is very warm due to the altitude. Second year we went in August and it was perfect. We stay on the east side where there’s more trees. Lake is always full and perfect for kayaks and SUPs. There is water available near each bathroom but there is no water at the sites themselves. This is now our annual end-of-summer tradition. We’re heading back in August.

Very friendly and open in the winter!!!

We picked up our new Bean Trailer in Utah this January and needed a place to stay with bathroom facilities.  This Camp was the only one around that had facilities in the wintertime.  What a Godsend!  The staff was very friendly and the bathrooms were clean and warm which was very welcome with the weather in the single digits.  I would highly recommend this Camp as a comfortable pass-through camp!

      Nice for overnight!

Arrived 6:15pm. Called in around 5pm on a Friday and they had a site available for the night. Unclear where RVs should park to check in at the hotel lobby, but there’s a large parking area so we parked sideways through several spots. They escorted us to our site: pull through, full hookups. Sites are long with plenty of room for the slide. Can hear the noise from the idling big rigs right next to the campground. Bathrooms are in the hotel lobby, which closes at 10:30pm, or the Travel Center right next door. There’s also a Sinclair gas station on the property. Would definitely stay here again.

Great place to stop for the night

All the basics are here! Spotless bathrooms inc showers. Little but completely fenced dog area. Heated pool (in season). Wifi. Just about a mile S of I-80. Extremely nice manager. Very little shade and it's Wyoming, so "breezy"😉 $40+tax for power and water. (I'm not sure if there's an extra charge for sewer since my tiny camper isn't so equipped and my site doesn't hv it available.)

Nice KOA, just missing a couple minor items

Overall, a very nice KOA. Picnic tables are all new and maintained, new fire rings. I stayed in tent camping, and it was grassy and level.

Lots of drive thru spots for electric and hookups.

The staff greeted me warmly. The office was clean and maintained.

Bathrooms were clean, but a tad dated. But they were servicable, smelled clean.

Pool was being repaired at the beginning of .e.orial Day weekend. A bit of a bummer. Also, there waa no firewood that I saw for sale.

The grounds were about half full.

The other slight downside was I-80 noise. I made a video so you can hear the noise. Its about 1 mile away.

      I would stay here again!

      Large developed CG

Largest developed CG on westside of flaming gorge. Several loops for TTs/TVs and tent campers. Electric hookups sites also. Water, trash, restrooms, showers. Lots of staff maintenance activity around. Not my style of camping but families will like it and RVs that need electric will like it. $31 electric sites, $22 no electric sites. Water, trash restrooms, showers.

      Big parking lot camping

This camp area is sectioned off of the very large sheep creek bay boat ramp parking. There are just 4-5 spots on blacktop for TTs and RVs, one tiny spot for a lone tenter. No shade and big toy hauler TTs seem to hog the area. $13/$6.50 senior, NO WATER no cell signal. Trash and toilets at boat ramp about 100yds away across the blacktop parking area. Unless you are a boat person, this blacktop cg area is not my idea of a cg. No RV dump either.

      Rustic but expensive

This historic FS guard station complex can be only reserved, but you better bring all your extended family to foot the cost...$250-$300 nite! Lots of rustic amenities like showers but a person there noted the generator had malfunctioned and so no electricity at least July 2021. Guard Station is off main road and mostly hidden from passing traffic on the geology loop road going by.
