    Forked Run State Park Campground

Dirty pit toilets. Dirty sinks. Beautiful lake.

This state park has a beautiful lake and a nice beach. There are boat rentals and a frisbee golf course. Overall, this part of the park is beautiful.

The campgrounds, however, leave a lot to be desired. The people were really nice, but the facilities were terrible. The pit toilets were filthy- covered in flies, spiderwebs and dirt. They look like they have not been hosed out since the 70's. The showers and sinks are in an old, old building- it could be fine if it were cleaned daily, but it was filthy too. I was there 3 days and the showers and sinks were never cleaned. They were pretty gross from the start, but then by Saturday night one shower housed a pile of feces. No kidding. Poop in the shower.

We stayed in the camper cabin, which is just a very basic shed with a bed, bunk beds, air conditioning and heat. We stayed there because it was July and I wanted A/C and electricity. The cabin smelled like mold.

I'd go back to this lake but will not stay in the campgrounds again.

    Lake Hope State Park Campground

Great spot for getting prepared for zaleski and going kayaking

Several campsites are on a slope so this calls for being creative with placement of tent.
Firewood available for purchase on site. Lake Hope lodge provides great warm and dry spot for delicious food.

Several activities available, fishing available anywhere on the lake, kayak rental for $10 and good size lake.

Very clean pit toliets and running water available dispersed throughout the park. Several hiking trails, zaleski is nearby, hocking hills is 30 minutes away. Moonville tunnel and iron furnace in the area.

    Burr Oak State Park Campground

    Beautiful but questionable design.

We stayed down at the "lake" spots which are not on the lake but quite above it. Our first site was #19, we were even hesitant to park our 23ft camper in it, but we did and then realized that as soon as we try to get in or out of the camper, it was a steep drop down 5ft. All the sites around this part were steep and tents were pitched on hillsides and most people only stayed for 1 night. We moved to a flatter spot but still had some fun fanagaling the camper in it. Very quiet campground during the week but as soon as Friday hits, it's crazy and loud. We had some neighbors who didn't respect the Quiet hours starting at 10pm and were told very nicely by the Park Ranger and still made a huge fuss. Glad we only stayed for 2 nights.

    Forked Run State Park

On the border with West Virginia. There aren’t really sites on the water but there’s a nice path to the lake from the camp sites and lots of deer. We spent most of the time on the water (there’s a power limit on the boats) but the campsites were nice in a simple kind of way (showers but no flush).

    Fall trip

Big property with every site type. Complete with KOA amenities. EV chargers on-site. Bathrooms were excellent individually separated rooms with showers and toilets. We were escorted to our site upon arrival. Very poor Verizon coverage but the Wi-Fi on site worked fine. Plenty of food spots just north on the highway exit we stopped at Milstone BBQ. Plenty of fun hikes in Hocking Hills State park.

Awesome staff family owned for over 20 plus years. Extremely clean well maintained. Shower houses plenty of hot water facilities were very clean sites are well spread apart. Handicap sites available including cabin rentals fire wood and menu items delivered to your campsite from camp kitchen and store. Sites are reasonably level we had to use one 3/4 “ leveler under the wheels in one side. They have sites that are full hook up with wooden decks prices were 80.00 to 135.00 per night for those that were paved and with decks. All the others were water and electric. “ cable and WiFi “ included 70 plus channels. 50 /30 /20 amp power at all sites. Big Rig friendly. Close to all sites. Trails and state park Camp store was well stocked actually had what you needed if you forgot something. Prices were reasonable Definitely recommended to anybody traveling through the area Owner planning to stay open all year working g on some big upgrades to campground to accommodate winter weather camping. Nice swimming staff was very helpful restaurants gas stations groceries with in 10 min drive.

    Burr Oak State Park Campground

    Great site!

Site 41 with a paved pad and electric. We were across from the shower house and bathrooms. The office is closed but a staff person was on site. Our site was perfect for us with trees on either side to help with shade. Across our site was also a big green space to walk our dogs. Not all the electric sites have shade especially if you are up top. The lower electric is much better however some of the sites hardly have a space for tents and would be better for a camper. Lots of places to hike and a lake to kayak or canoe. There’s a big playground for the kids as well. The tent only sites are a little less desirable as they are all downhill and mostly uneven. They have flush toilets and sinks but you’d have to come up to the main campground to shower. Pick your site wisely!

Hook Lake (Campground A) — Jesse Owens State Park

    Can’t wait to come back!!!

Beautiful campground with fire pit and table. Our site was big enough for 3 6 person tents but most sites are smaller and fit 1-2 4 person tents.

Good trails to hike and wonderful scenery. No cell reception unless you have satellite.

The raccoons were a little to close for comfort in the evening make sure you lock your food and trash in your car at night.

    Burr Oak State Park Campground

    What You Make Of It

Luxurious accommodations and continental breakfasts won’t be found here…..a space to unwind and reflect will. The sites are sloped and ill paved but the sights, the sights are quintessential Southeast Ohio. Rolling hills dotted with little burgs where the oil has dried up but the resolve has yet to. A slight traverse down the hill lends views normally reserved for travel mags and postcards if just a bit of adventure is employed.

Guide to Lubeck

Forked Run State Park Campground and other Ohio state parks provide varied camping experiences near Lubeck, West Virginia. Most campgrounds in this region remain open year-round with varying amenities and site conditions. The terrain features rolling Appalachian foothills with lakes created by dams, offering fishing opportunities in watersheds that ultimately connect to the Ohio River.

What to do

Disc golf at Forked Run: The 18-hole course attracts players of all skill levels. "The disc golf was top notch. I would go camping here again," notes Benjamin C. who appreciates the scenic course layout with wooded and open fairways.

Creek exploration at Blue Rock: Small waterways flow through the camping areas, providing natural entertainment. "There is a creek running through the main primitive campsites below the dam, with minnows and crawfish for the kids to catch," reports Ryan W. from Blue Rock State Park Campground.

Kayak the secluded waterways: Many parks offer boat rentals for exploring coves and inlets. At Strouds Run State Park Campground, visitors find "a great place to rent a paddle board, kayak, canoe, or pontoon" according to Lucille W., with rentals available seasonally at the boat house.

What campers like

Uncrowded weekday camping: Many campgrounds in the region have low occupancy during weekdays. "The park has over 150 campsites and the times I've been there, only a few were occupied," shares Shane T. about Forked Run State Park Campground, noting the ample availability of sites even during peak season.

Stargazing opportunities: Clear nights offer excellent celestial viewing. Olivia S. recommends Strouds Run, stating it's "Amazing at night for stargazing!" with minimal light pollution allowing for exceptional night sky visibility.

Group camping facilities: Several parks offer dedicated spaces for larger gatherings. At Hook Lake Campground, Tony M. reports that "27 vehicles and 49 people from an overlanding trip stayed in the camp ground" with adequate space and facilities for their entire group.

What you should know

Primitive toilet facilities: Many parks utilize vault or pit toilets rather than flush facilities. At Forked Run, Sandra S. notes, "Outhouses are gross. Usable, but gross. No water hook ups, but a place to fill your tank behind water fountains."

Limited yurt camping near Lubeck: Yurt accommodations are available but often require advance booking. "We camped at both Dock 3 and Dock 2 with our dog, those are the only two areas that allow pets," explains Kelsey R. from Burr Oak State Park Campground, where yurt camping options include lakeside and forest settings.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between parks. "Rural area. Lake. Disc golf. Fishing. Swimming. Hiking. I would go camping here again," notes Benjamin C. about Forked Run, with reception typically stronger near higher elevation campsites.

Tips for camping with families

Free camping options: Budget-conscious families should consider Hook Lake. "This is a free campsite that was part of the AEP reclamation lands," explains Kenpocentaur K., adding that the area is "becoming the Jesse Owens State Park" but remains free at the time of writing.

Playgrounds and activities: Some campgrounds offer dedicated children's areas. "Free tricycles to ride around. Bouncy area, lake with a trampoline and activities all the time," reports Vance M. about Hocking Hills Jellystone Campground, noting organized events for children.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Dawn and dusk offer chances to spot local fauna. Dan N. observed at Forked Run that there are "lots of deer" visible from the campgrounds, and a trail leads to the lake where wildlife congregates.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Many sites require equipment for proper setup. "Sites are very bad for tent camping and not the best for RV's. Back ins are short and most sites have no level ground," warns Bob L. about terrain at Forked Run.

Weekend availability: RV sites fill quickly during peak periods. "It was raining and I was prepared and just slept in my car, as many others did," shares Anna S. about Kountry Resort Campground, where Melissa E. adds it's a "Nice quiet campground" particularly suited for families seeking relaxation.

Site selection strategy: Loop location affects amenities and noise levels. At Lake Hope, Marshall P. advises "sites are mostly small and tight on hilly terrain" but still recommends it as "a nice weekend getaway" for those with properly sized equipment.
