          It's a place to stay

Don't have much of a review, we found a spot here last second after signing up to run the Sun Mountain 25k last minute. Barely spent any time at the campground. I know the location was good for being able to just walk into town. The camp spots were just shared space in a grassy area. Nothing spectacular.

We took the opportunity to secure one of the “private” lots. Site S9 comes with a private fenced area, with fire pit, hot tub, seating and fully ready propane Weber. Staff is immediate and attentive. Free WiFi and only 1 hour from the National Park.

Free WiFi, Free Showers, Bathrooms, Water

Currently, there is a 72-hour camping limit and is a city park, which means they don't accept any type of pass or discount such as the Discover Pass. The fee is $10/night (72 hours maximum). But you can still hang out here during the day-use hours until then, if you don't have the money.

I like this area very much. Nothing spectacular, but free showers, free WiFi, bathrooms, water faucet, and water spigot is hard to beat.

You can call them and ask any questions. The number is 509-422-3600

A great spot to spend the night while touring the North Cascades

I really enjoyed my stay here.  The staff was very friendly and helpful.  I went to make my freeze dried meal and noticed I forgot to pack my camp spork and one of the other campers there helped me out.

I had a "lake front" site, which was really nice but still a good 100 yards from the lake.  But I was happy with an unobstructed view.

The other campers were all very nice about not making too much noise after sundown which I really appreciated after a long and hot day riding in the area.

The really neat town of Winthrop is about 5 minutes away.  AT&T had good enough cell phone signal for me to be able to facetime with my wife and kids.

Next time I make this trip I plan on staying here again.

parking lot with grass area for tents. Toilets and shower. $10 per night

Great place if you’re just looking for a spot to spend the night or take a shower. The park is sandwiched between a busy city street and the river. Bathrooms are old but clean. Possibly open all night. There are no individual spots it’s just a long parking lot with a grass area for tents.

          Lone Fir Campground

Mountain View’s by Early Winters Creek

We camped here in early October so there was no fee. The vault toilet was clean but there is no maintenance until the late spring.

We camped in space 23 by one of the vault toilets. We had views of the surrounding craggy mountains. Ours was a drive through site and very spacious. We also could only see 2 other campers as there was some nice spacing between us. I just love their huge planked picnic tables made of 4”x12” fir.

There was some highway noise but it quieted down after dark as our campsite was close to the highway. As always, be bear aware and do not leave food out.

          Bonaparte Lake Campground

          Lake Gem in the Mountains

We found Bonaparte Lake Campground through Dyrt when sites were not available at Curlew State Park and we needed some place in that Okanagon/Ferry County area of Washington. Part of Bonaparte Lake is available by reservation. We lucked out at the time and found what ended up being the perfect site. It had plenty of room for our A Frame trailer and truck and could have fit another vehicle on the site. The table/fire ring area was generous and private, with space for our dog to be on a 25 ft lead. In fact, the whole site was very private with the campers to the right of us at least 50 feet away from us and no one to the back of us or to the left of us directly. I guess I should stop saying how great our site was so we can get it again sometime! In our loop we only had pit toilets. In the non-reservation loop there was one restroom with flush toilets and then other pit toilets. No showers available. The non-reservation loop had lovely sites as well with some right on the lake. Our loop had lake sites, too. The camp host was amazingly helpful and friendly, giving us maps of things to do in the area. We took a loop to find old ghost towns and remnants in the area plus other loops. We tried to schedule our trip up this way in July to beat the smoke from forest fires but unfortunately due to early heat conditions and dryness forest fires started early this year. We ran into some smoke the 2nd day of our trip there but the third day was clearer. It never got bad while we were at Bonaparte Lake but just over the mountains in Oroville where we went to get gas, it was in the unhealthy range of the Air Quality Index. We will definitely go back to Bonaparte again sometime. It would make a beautiful trip in the early fall.

          Horrible

There was liquid poop on the floor, the camp host sign was so dilapidated so there was no where to checkin not to mention the leeches that were biting my son. Store hours were never mention, had to build my own fire pit,AFTER I had to acquire a grill , the water access is virtually nonexistent UNLESS, you go through other peoples sites/spaces and scale down an embankment.

Fun Family Time on quiet lake

We always have a great time camping in new places and this little lake and campground were another one we tried: it was very beautiful and we were lucky to have a front spot to have more privacy. Negatives were the right camping spaces and the lake was so murky, swimming and fishing were not activities we got to enjoy. We probably won’t stay here again, tho we did take advantage of the firewood for sale and fire pits!

          Amazing Campground gaining traction!

I stayed here 2 years ago and got a reservation less than a month before we left.  This year, 2021, I cant even book a site for the summer right now!  I love that people have discovered this hidden gem but I am bummed I cant go back this year.

With that being said... this area is wonderful.  Many lakes, hiking trails, fishing, wildlife viewing -- it really has it all.  The sites are quite large and can definitely hold a large party.  You can access the lake from most of the sites but there is also a dock there for fishing.

Hike Strawberry Mountain if you have the time its beautiful views - but turn your phone off to avoid pinging Canadian service towers.

          Can't wait to come back!

This KOA is a great campground, it's clean, it's centrally located to the town of Winthrop and there are close by amenities for groceries, etc. A very kid friendly place to stay as well. They even have some sites that are fenced for privacy and these sites have a hot tub and grill.

          Nice clean USFS campground

We have never camped here before so decided to try it out. The campground is sited on Bonaparte Lake’s southern end. It is stocked with fish and there are loons present. Some sites hav3 lake frontage and are deep sites. One couple across from us had a hammock between 2 trees with a great lake view. There are a few rustic cabins across the lake but they were unoccupied while we were there.

There was an amazing camp host while we stayed who made sure the vault and flush toilets were clean. There is a dock where you can fish plus a boat launch. A swimming area is also available. The fee is $12 or $6 with Senior Pass. We have a 24’ pop up truck camper and my sister’s small SUV fit in our site 17.

          We will return.

          KOA Campground Winthrop

          Cowboy KOA

          Winthrop/ N Cascades NP KOA

Nice KOA! The sites are HUGE for a KOA and very well maintained. Sorta a western vibe which goes along with Winthrop City. Nice little town but somewhat tourist trappy. Not horribly so and a cool boardwalk to walk along. If you take away all the traffic and replace it with horses, etc you would almost be in an old west town. The river that meanders along the back of the campground is the stopping point for tube rentals. The river is very rocky so not enjoyable to walk along but apparently good for fishing. There are two very cool wagons that are rentable to stay in, as well as cabins. The campground was very quiet (except for the playground straight across from my site) and not busy on the weekdays we visited. On the side of the playground was a nice camp kitchen with tables and large sinks. The laundry room and shower house are in the same building. The one strange thing is the dump sites location. You have to go to the far right side near the back of the park and then drive all the way back to the front. A lot to do and it would be easy to occupy your vacation time.

          KOA Campground Winthrop

          Good Base Location

The Winthrop KOA is similar and on par with most other KOA campgrounds, as far amenities go. The campground is right on the Methow River which is great, however, early in the camping season the current is so swift, you would not be able to swim in it. The campground itself has a western vibe, with old wagons that you can actually rent to sleep in, log cabins, and western-style artifacts throughout. The campground is right off of the highway, so there is a little car noise during the day. At night, we didn't really notice it. With the location of the campground in Methow Valley, it can get really windy. One of the nights we were there, we had to douse our campfire because embers were flying everywhere. We had site 18 which was at the end of one of the rows and it was very spacious with a big grass area and a few trees.

We liked the location because it was close to Winthrop and many of the outdoor activities available in the area such as hiking trails, off-road tracks, fishing, kayaking, etc. The area is beautiful and has much to offer in the scenery department, even for folks that are car-bound.

          KOA Campground Winthrop

Western Themed KOA, Worthy of KOA Namesake

We are all familiar with KOA and that the company prides itself in bringing more features to their campers. But many times I have found that comes with a hefty price tag. On some occasions I have been ready to spend it and other times I have to be convinced a little more due to the location.

When pulling into Winthrop I really wanted to find out a little more about their KOA and if it was more of a hit or miss. Themed much like the other portions of the community in western decor, the campground welcomed me immediately. I found that the rustic them of the stacked fence and the cabin like exterior of the main office was just a taste of the what was to come within the community.

It only continued with their other offerings. They had many old pieces along the way which would be perfect for taking photos, enjoying a piece of the old west and setting the tone.

This park offered camping for RVs and tents but also had cabins. Cost was on target for the other options in the community and came with many luxuries which others did not including a store, pool and play area. Laundry was offered at this location as well and they had kayak and boat rentals if you were wanting to go and enjoy some of the many waterways in the area.

I really enjoyed the spacing of the sites, however many were not well covered by trees and left something to be desired. The gravel roadway was muddy from recent rain and made it a bit sloshy to get to the sites themselves. So while they were nice overall that particular thing would something I would say is a bit of a let down in comparison to the rest of the facility.

The play area was another area which would be perfect for grabbing a few memorable photos, with oversized brightly colored chairs which could fit then entire family. Additionally they offered a nice outdoor space with patio chairs and umbrellas by the office which was a nice place to stop in and enjoy some time.

Overall the biggest asset to this campground still laid in their proximity to the community itself. From here you can drive only a few miles and be in the middle of the historic downtown western themed community and enjoy some very unique activities. For that I would say that the benefits outweigh the downside of cost which is between$30 and$50 for tent or RV camping.

          Tips:

          • Book online in advance of your stay if you are wanting a tent site, they are more limited.
          • If you are in a larger rig, bring a detachable vehicle to navigate in town as there are not a lot of places to park larger rigs in the community itself.

Big Twin Lake Campground & RV Park

Ranger Review: Stream2Sea at Big Twin Lake Campground

Winthrop is an interesting place for campgrounds.  I did a bit of driving around and exploring my options, of which there were a few, before settling on this site.

          Campground Review:

Big Twin Lake Campground is located 3 miles south of Winthrop, which makes it feel a little out of the way, in a good way.  They have both tent and RV sites.  The camp host made a variety of helpful suggestions for spots to camp, both in the traditional tent spots and further out in the 90 acres they have.

The tent and RV campsites are mostly close together, under a spread out stand of trees, all with lake views.  There are 'orchard' spots available as well, which have more space between them. We settled on a spot at the end of the tent sites, before it turns into the orchard.  So one side of us did not have other campers, which was nice.  There is little to no privacy between the tent sites, but it ended up not being an issue the night we stayed.  The spot had a nice fire pit (but there was a burn ban, so no fire for us) and a picnic table set up.

The campground offered paddle boats, fishing, and I understood there was swimming available, though we did not utilize these items.  I did buy ice from the campground at a decent price.  They have toilets for use at both ends of the campground and a pay shower at the larger bathrooms. All in all, it was a decent stay.

Product Review: As a Ranger for the Dyrt, from time to time I get to test products. At Big Twin Lake Campground, I tested a variety of the Stream2Sea Products.

Prior to staying at Big Twin Lake, I had been camping and hiking in the summer sun, so I had plenty of time to test their products.  I tried their Standard Sunscreen, Tinted, Chap-stick with sunscreen, Shampoo/Body wash, and Leave in Conditioner and the Body Lotion.

Here is what I have discovered:

          1. These products seriously work.  I was using the Stream2Sea sunscreen while my hiking/camping buddy was using a different sunscreen. I was surprised that the Stream2Sea worked better - he got burned, but I did not.

          2. The sunscreen kept me cooler while in the blazing sun.

          3. The Shampoo/body wash works great as a way to clean dirt off yourself if no showers are nearby.

          4. The sunscreen/chap-stick does not taste like sunscreen.

          5. The non-tinted sunscreen goes on white and, honestly, tends to stay that way.  I was completely fine with that as I'd rather be pasty and my skin healthy.

          6. I love the way the body lotion feels, it does seems to be very hydrating.

          7. Stream2Sea is coral safe, which I didn't get to test but love about them and they are biodegradable.  A company that cares about the environment and makes products that seriously work - that makes them all-stars in my book.

Love this place, the lake, the campground, the campsite store. It’s so nice to camp in a place where they have row boats to rent and fish with. The lake is so full of fish, there’s no way you get skunked. So much wildlife around, we saw big horn rams, osprey, bald eagles, marmots, and all sorts of birds and fish. This place has everything.
