Rundown

Rundoing, overgrown and no water for 4+ years. I've contacted forestry personnel on several occasions, seems no interest in repairs. Bath buildings are closed and in a sad state. We loved this place in the past  years. If you go take water and something to cut the overgrowth. Dump station closed/ water issue. Our federal tax dollars going somewhere else

Nice weekend getaway!

We ventured out to this very remote campground. There is no cell signal or WiFi, so perfectly made for escaping the daily grind. The tent sites are awesome and you are truly in the wilderness with the closes store being 20 miles away. We had a wonderful time but the water was turned off at the site due to plumbing issues so bring your own water as needed. There are camp host there but we never interacted with them. Super quite at night, we kept our mosquito torches lit during the duration of the night. This kept the mosquitos at bay because they did come out at night. There are many trails around and even a small creek. Great place!

Beautiful, quiet, and relaxing.

This is a great spot to get away from almost everything. No cell, no wifi, no hook ups, no showers.

Lots of hiking with a short 1.3 loop mile trail right out of the campground, and several trails nearby, including a few different connectors to sections of the AT.

Usually few if any campers here, but lots of wildlife to be seen and heard in and around the campground.

Theres a camp host who takes care of both bath houses, which have sinks and  flush toilets. No hot water, and no showers. There are a few water hydrants throughout the campground for water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make reservations for White Rocks Campground?

White Rocks Campground typically operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservation system. The remote nature of the campground generally means low occupancy, so finding an available site isn't usually difficult. For the most current information on reservation policies, fees, and campground status, contact the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests office that manages the site. Given the reported maintenance issues, checking on current conditions before planning your trip is highly recommended.

What amenities are available at White Rocks Campground in Virginia?

White Rocks Campground offers very basic amenities, emphasizing a true wilderness experience. The campground features tent sites in a remote setting but currently has several service limitations. The water system has been non-operational for some time, so visitors must bring their own water supply. There are vault toilets, though the bathroom buildings have fallen into disrepair. No hookups, showers, cell service, or WiFi are available, making this an ideal spot for those seeking to disconnect completely. There is a dump station, though it may not be operational. Pack accordingly as the closest store is approximately 20 miles away.

What is the best time of year to visit White Rocks Campground?

Late spring through early fall is generally the best time to visit White Rocks Campground, with summer offering warm days for hiking and exploring. Fall provides beautiful foliage colors throughout the surrounding forest. Given the campground's remote location and lack of services, avoiding periods of extreme weather is advisable. The lack of running water is a particular consideration during hot summer months. Before planning a trip during any season, check with forest service officials about current conditions, as maintenance issues may affect your experience regardless of when you visit.

What outdoor activities can I do near White Rocks Campground?

White Rocks Campground offers excellent access to numerous hiking opportunities. A convenient 1.3-mile loop trail starts directly from the campground, perfect for a quick nature walk. The area connects to several other trails, including multiple access points to the Appalachian Trail. The remote setting makes it ideal for wildlife viewing, bird watching, and stargazing away from light pollution. The wilderness location provides a true backcountry experience with opportunities for solitude and exploration of the surrounding forest. Be prepared for overgrown conditions on some trails, as maintenance may be limited.
