Pocahontas State Park Campground provides equestrian camping opportunities within a 7,900-acre protected area southwest of Richmond. The campground operates seasonally from March through December with 42 designated sites accepting both tent and RV camping. Temperatures range from winter lows averaging 30°F to summer highs often exceeding 90°F, making spring and fall the most comfortable seasons for equestrian activities.
What to do
Trail riding exploration: Pocahontas State Park features a dedicated bridle trail system with routes ranging from 2.5 to 7 miles. "Great State Park campground! No sewer hookups (they do have 30/50amp). Lots of hiking, fantastic mountain bike trails, lots of history. LOVE the staff," notes Ashley I. from Pocahontas State Park Campground.
Kayaking and fishing: Take a break from riding to enjoy water activities at nearby waterways. "Lots of trails, nature center, pool, and creek for kayaking and fishing. You can also rent water equipment while you're there. Very good for beginners," shares Samantha G. about water recreation options at Pocahontas.
Historical site visits: Combine horseback riding with Virginia history at Chippokes State Park Campground, located 45 minutes southeast of Hopewell. "This hidden gem is just a short distance from Williamsburg but yet so remote! The still working farm and homes are a treasure of how life and farms ran back in the day," reports Rose H.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Horse owners appreciate the generous spacing between sites. "Some of the campsites are surrounded with forest. Very quiet and peaceful," notes Gregg S. about Pocahontas State Park Campground.
Clean facilities: "Well laid out sites, clean restrooms and showers," reports Glenn T. about Powhatan State Park Campground, another equestrian-friendly option located 35 miles northwest of Hopewell with trailer access.
Variety of terrain: Equestrian trails throughout the region offer diverse riding experiences. "What a beautiful park! Over 1500 acres with 40 sites... The park has lots of trails, miles of open meadows, and James River access. Great park for bicycling," explains RL about Powhatan State Park.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Book campsites well in advance, especially during peak riding seasons. "Booked last minute on a Wednesday night they had two openings. Sites are very spacious and good distance between other campers. Nice privacy," reports Jim L. about visiting Powhatan State Park midweek.
Trail conditions: Weather significantly impacts riding conditions, particularly after rain. "Every camper's dream spot. Seriously, this modern giant state park has it all: mostly private sites, a paved road for biking, plenty of tree cover(even in winter) a lifetime's worth of trails to explore," shares N P. from Pocahontas State Park.
Seasonal considerations: "We stayed during the week in October. It was warm enough during the day and got a bit chilly at night," notes Jessica T. about fall camping at Powhatan State Park, when temperatures typically range from 45-65°F.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several equestrian-friendly campgrounds include family recreation areas. "Staff were wonderful, huge place that is well kept, trails are trimmed back daily. Bathrooms are individual with a shower in each one. Lots of geocaching on grounds, fishing, hiking, boat launch, canoe racks, playground, a store with a nature center, and a Junior Ranger program for the kids," explains Lisa P. about Powhatan State Park.
Educational opportunities: Combine riding with learning experiences. "Great Campground! We took 6 teenagers camping and they had a blast! Especially the pool!" reports Virginia B. about Chippokes State Park Campground.
Safety considerations: Maintain proper distance between horses and non-equestrian campers. "This campground is definitely for trail bikers and RVers. The campsites fill up quickly," advises Emmely B. about weekend crowds at Powhatan.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose appropriate sites for your trailer configuration. "Sites in the River Bend Campground(main campground) are private and wooded, especially this time of year when the trees are so full. The map makes it look like they're really close together so I was pleasantly surprised," notes RL about Chippokes State Park.
Hookup availability: "Campground is waaayyy back in the back of park. Only a few years old. No full hookup (yes 30/50 amp). Well maintained trails, level sites. No river access in campground," reports Ashley I. about facilities at Powhatan State Park.
Accessibility concerns: "Some sites were very level. We were on site seven which was very long but very unlevel," shares Jim L. about navigating larger rigs at Powhatan State Park.
