Just 30 miles north of Winston-Salem, Hanging Rock State Park is located in the Sauratown Mountain Range. Named for the early Saura peoples who once inhabited the area, this range towers over the surrounding country, with peaks reaching nearly 2600 feet in elevation. The park derives its name from the large quartzite escarpment that “hangs” over the valley below. Established in 1936, the park initially encompassed 3100 acres, but has grown to 7900 acres since 2015. With its proximity to the suburban areas of Stokes County, the park serves as a backyard playground for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, rock climbers, paddlers, anglers and campers.

The 73-site campground in Hanging Rock State Park is an ideal basecamp for enjoying all the outdoor activities the park has to offer. Campsites can accommodate tents, popups and limited RVs; there are no hookups or dump stations at this location. Each site is equipped with picnic tables, grills and tent pads. Drinking water is available at several locations in the campground, and there are two bathhouses with hot showers. There are also five primitive group campsites with picnic tables and fire circles; drinking water and vault toilets are available nearby. If you don’t feel like roughing it, the park also offers 10 vacation cabins. Each of these are equipped with a kitchen, bathroom and sleeping accommodations for up to six.

When you’re ready to play, there are more than 20 miles of multiuse trails in Hanging Rock State Park for hiking, biking and riding. Trails vary in length and difficulty, so drop by the visitor center and pick up a trail map. For the mobility impaired, there is a 0.1-mile path to the Rock Garden. Anglers can enjoy casting for bass, sunfish, and catfish either by boat or wading on the park’s small lake. Canoe and rowboat rentals are available for paddling on the lake, or you can bring your own gear for paddling or fishing on the Dan River. Rock climbing is permitted on the 400-foot-high Cook’s Wall and Moore’s Wall. For just kicking it under the trees, the park has several picnic areas, as well as an exhibit hall and concession stand.

        Great stop!!

Best campground I’ve stayed at on a bike. Very welcoming, quiet and peaceful. Few small town stores about a mile away including gas. Nice bath houses with shower. We had a fire every night and good conversation. Great stop, 10/10 I will make a point to be back!

        Hanging Rock State Park Campground

        Cool place

We went late April on a weekend. The place was pretty packed. I think many people from Raleigh and Winston Salem come here because it's so close. We stayed until Monday, most of the people left on Sunday and Monday it was fairly empty. The park has 5 waterfalls I believe. Some are shorter hikes but almost all the hikes involve a steep hill climb of stairs. We got our workout in seeing all the sites. The bathhouses seemed kind of dated, the showers were very small with even smaller doors that didn't leave much to the imagination. You could see everything from chest up and knees down. They gave you hooked to hang your things outside the door but that would involve being naked in front of everyone to retrieve your things. We had a camper so I used my own shower. Most of the sites are small and very close together. They do control burns often so there isn't any bushes giving you privacy. I'd suggest going during the week when there is less people. We stayed in site 11 because it was one of the few long enough for our 25ft camper. No hook ups or dump stations.

        Very relaxing and tidy

I stayed by myself and felt very safe in the beautiful, wooded campgrounds. Everything was very well taken care of and my camp spot was good as well when I did my spot check before and after leaving. The park has so many perks- waterfalls, hanging rock views, what seems like endless trails for hiking, and really nice cool weather when I go to the mountains.

        Neat, tucked away and quiet

This place is relatively small, but surrounds a small lake. Sites are close together, but everyone is respectful. Bathrooms leave something to be desired, and there is no family bathroom, but otherwise decent and the water is hot. With a little work this place could be great.

Great RV sites, lots to do.

Rv sites are really nice and not on top of each other. Some are close to the water. Lots of clearly marked hiking trails, 3 playgrounds, Frisbee golf and horshoe pits. Really preety and lots of boat docks. Staff are super nice. The only negative is the state of the showers and bathrooms. They are in need of a lot of repair. Heater in the showers and bathrooms didn't work. Water was hot though. Overall, this place is really good for the price. With good restrooms, this place easily be double the nightly rate.

        Won’t visit again

The camp ground is in need of upkeep. Campsites fine. All have a fire ring. Beware with pull thru’s your water and electric will be on the “wrong side”- you’re door will be facing the road and picnic table, fire ring will be behind you. The trails are poorly if at all maintained and trail signage is not good. Dump station (just one) muddy and could use a larger concrete “curb” and some gravel. The host is a bit militant. Immediately came over after we arrived and told us to keep our dogs on a leash (they were already tied up. Beach area is nice. Has a fishing pier. It’s about a 2 mile walk on a trail to it or you can drive to it. We live in VA and camp at all the state parks. This state park in no way measures up to those.

        Our favorite

The park is so beautiful. The sites are a little rough but easy to level your rig. The park has great trails around it, they can be pretty challenging when it comes to elevation gain. The lake is wonderful. They were updating cabins when we were there last, they look great. The showers were clean and the bathroom was the same. The host was a nice gentleman. No Verizon service or WiFi. We go here to get away.

Great lake and facility, nasty staff

The facilities are excellent! The lake beach area is particularly nice and staffed by lifeguards. However, the behavior of the camp host was shocking. We were packing up to leave when he knocked on our door at 1 o’clock sharp to let us know that we had to be out. He then proceeded to sit where he could watch us until we left 10 minutes late. Obviously I am not proud of running a little late, but there was no one coming in at the moment and I have never had an experience like that with any other campground, public or private

        Favorite place on earth

I have camped here for 15 years most in tents, each site contains all you need a table pole for light and fire pit. Bathhouse is open, clean showers are hot. They have classes for the children at the nature center. This park is all hands on, the staff ride around checking on folks and answering questions. Swimming area is first rate and the warmest clean waters that will make you forget the ocean.

        Great value and trails

We decided to check out this park and really loved it. We like quiet site and the person helping my husband on the phone did a great job suggesting such a site. We had easy access to the lake from our camper where we did some kayaking. Priced extremely reasonable. If you have to have cell phone service it is very spotty.

        Great all around campground

We had a really relaxing stay here. There were storms during our stay and the staff was very responsive to campers that were affecting by winds and debris. The pool was clean and well balanced. The walking trail was nice but you will for sure want to take an extra large can of deep woods off or equivalent. There are swarms of large flys all around the water on the trail. The sites are fairly level and the hookups were all in good order and locations.

The facility and people are welcoming and friendly.

I took a 4 day Father Daughter motorcycle trip to Meadows of Dan and explored the countryside. While there, we base camped at Willville. If you’re into moto-camping, or curious about trying it, I’d highly recommend Willville. This was my daughter's first touring adventure on a motorcycle, as well as her first camping experience. I could not have imagined a better experience with Will and fellow campers. The facility is incredibly well kept. I frequently stay at state parks, and Will keeps his facility on par, if not better. This was my first stay at a motorcycle camp and all I can say is I would feel as safe as a father can, in any situation, if my daughter wanted to go there on a solo ride.

        Really great campground

We camped at HRSP in March, and yes it got bloody cold. But, we had an awesome time. HRSP has fantastic trails to hike. The campground is really great. Be sure to look at the pad size when you book your stay. The bathhouse was OK. It gets a lot of use and some people live like pigs...so... Nevertheless, I'll camp there anytime. The sites fill up so plan early.

        Nice but needs improvement

We arrive at campground and entered without issues, however, there was no signs directing us to site numbers. We did find our reserved site but unlike many places we have been there wasn't any receipt or tags attached to pole. The site it's self was up hill which caused our car wheels to spin and made it difficult to park.
We also noted that our water and electricity was on the passenger side of our vehicle so it was a good thing we had an extra hose to reach the water as well as a long enough cord to reach the electric box. The park itself is nice and lake access is easy with several piers. I didn't visit the bathhouse so can't speak to it's condition but the rest of the park was clean.

        Just ok

The freeway noise is the biggest negative. The host was extremely nice and friendly, the gravel sites are wide enough but ours was way off from level. Nice dog area and small playground. They have a clean nice little store and a pool ( although it wasn’t open yet this year when we were there)

Lovely, but March was maybe not the *best* time to go for us ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We pitched a tent at campsite #20, and the area was really well kept. Fairly private, very quiet, and opened up to a big forest area. It was low/mid 30's overnight so the kids were really cold and we ended up having to cut the trip short (warmed up nicely during the day, though).

I'm not sure if it was the season or another issue, but water spigots and restrooms on our loop were not functional. Working restrooms on the other loop were very nice and well-maintained, but a pretty good drive away. Dishwashing stations on both loops did not have taps so they were also non-functional… again, I'm not sure if it's a seasonal thing or if everything was just out of commission for whatever reason.

I think firewood was supposed to be available to purchase from the host site near self-check-in, but we didn't see any. Husband went out & eventually found some at what he called a "general store" with an honor box – not sure where exactly.

Hiked the Hanging Rock Trail and it was AWESOME! Easy/moderate hike to the big warning sign, then more strenuous going all the way up to the top of the cliff. The views were incredible and definitely worth it! Sore the next day 😆 There were a lot of people and dogs on the trail, it's a popular spot.

Our experience was honestly 4-star, but I know this is a great spot and deserves 5. Wish we could have stayed longer and seen more, but we'll have to go back when it's warmer. Great place with a lot to see and do that's close to home for us :)
