Sea turtles patrol the clear waters where Maho Bay once welcomed campers to Virgin Islands National Park. This former beachside camping area sat directly on one of St. John's most active snorkeling destinations, where multiple reviewers spotted turtles, eels, and schools of tropical fish just steps from their tents.
The bay's crystal-clear water and abundant marine life made it a snorkeling hotspot that drew crowds, especially later in the day. Drew W. noted the area was "a bit more private than Cinnamon Bay," though campers still needed to arrive early to secure prime beachfront spots with shade trees suitable for hanging hammocks. The afternoon heat and humidity made tree cover essential for comfort.
Hiking trails connected the bay to other snorkeling areas throughout the national park, allowing campers to explore multiple underwater sites during their stay. Several reviewers emphasized bringing plenty of water and food, as the combination of heat, humidity, and activities quickly depleted supplies. For current camping options, visitors can check campgrounds near Virgin Islands National Park or consider Cinnamon Bay Beach And Campground, located less than a mile southwest.
While Maho Bay no longer offers overnight stays, the beach remains accessible for day visits and snorkeling adventures.
