Frontier Town Campground offers dedicated equestrian camping opportunities in New York's eastern Adirondack region, about 75 miles from Vergennes, Vermont. The campground features three distinct camping areas: the equestrian loop, stagecoach loop, and traditional tent sites. Sites in the equestrian area are exceptionally spacious, designed to accommodate both camping equipment and horse trailers, though RV positioning can be challenging at certain sites due to layout configurations.
What to do
Hiking at Branbury State Park: Access trails directly from Branbury State Park Campground including the popular Rattlesnake Cliffs trail. "I've been here dozens of times, grew up going here every year and hiking rattlesnake. We make the trip from RI. Love to lake access, secluded camping, the hiking and remote area," notes camper Stephen T.
Swimming and water activities: Cool off in Lake Dunmore at Branbury State Park where campers have beach access included with camping fees. "Across the street from the campground was access to the lake with plenty of grassy areas to hang out. And beautiful sunsets at night!" writes Nicole E.
Trail riding at equestrian campgrounds: Explore the trail systems connecting directly to Frontier Town Campground in North Hudson, NY. "This is a great home base to explore from the Lake George region to Ticonderoga to day hikes or cycling," reports Charles K. The campground serves as a strategic base for accessing various riding trails in the eastern Adirondacks.
What campers like
Clean, modern facilities: Campers consistently praise the maintenance at equestrian campgrounds near Vergennes. "The bathrooms are the cleanest I've seen so far and we do this full time," shares Chelsea B. about Frontier Town Campground.
Spacious sites: New Discovery State Park Campground offers varied camping options. "The sites are well separated and private. The grounds are beautiful and well situated to enjoy Groton State Forest," writes Robin B. Many sites feature ample room between neighbors.
Water proximity: Multiple campgrounds provide direct water access. "The camp sites near the beach are in a large grassy field, and across the road, the campsites are wooded, and some have lean tos," explains Sarah C. about New Discovery State Park.
What you should know
Seasonal bug activity: Early summer brings intense mosquito activity at many campgrounds in the region. "I saw the bugs, some of them clearly mosquitoes and I never saw one get away with biting me. But I ended up with two lower legs and two forearms that constantly itch like mad. I will never go back in June," warns Butch K. about Frontier Town.
Reservation requirements: AuSable Chasm Campground and other popular sites fill quickly during peak season. "We showed up on a busy Memorial Day weekend without reservations and the staff was kind enough to give us their last leanto," reports one camper at Branbury State Park.
Bear safety protocols: Wildlife encounters require proper food storage. "Just make sure you put your food and trash away- there are black bears in the area!" advises Nicole E. about camping at Branbury State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Branbury State Park Campground provides family-friendly facilities. "Spacious sites, hiking trails, biking trails, nice beach and grounds. Fishing, kayak, canoe, paddle boat and paddle board rentals. Theres a nature center with all kinds of information and activities. A large playground," reports J L.
Educational activities: Take advantage of nature centers and ranger-led programs. "The day use section has a wonderful beach with a swimming area and boat launch. Large trees provide shade on a grassy lawn, and grills are available," shares Lisa S.
Lean-to options: For families wanting a rustic experience without tent setup, consider lean-to sites. "The lean-to sites are really cool, and if I was tent camping I think they'd be so fun to sleep in," suggests Laura M. at New Discovery State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for big rigs: Choose equestrian camping areas for more space if traveling with larger RVs. "We stayed in site 33 which is in the equestrian camping area. It's really open with little tree cover which is perfect for those who work remote using Starlink," advises Chelsea B. about Groton Forest Road Campground.
Water fill considerations: Prepare for non-standard water connections at some parks. "The spigots for the water are not threaded. We tried our water bandit, with messy wet results," warns Laura M. about New Discovery State Park, suggesting campers bring adapters.
Leveling challenges: Some sites require significant leveling equipment. "RV site 8 is so out of level that we couldn't get our Airstream level unless we put 10" of blocking under both axles," cautions Brian P. about AuSable Chasm Campground.
