Best Equestrian Camping near Granville, VT

Frontier Town Campground in North Hudson, New York features specially designed equestrian camping areas with spacious sites for horses and their owners. The campground includes full hookup options with 50-amp service for RVs alongside accommodations for tent campers traveling with horses. Sites in the equestrian camping area are particularly large and open with minimal tree cover, providing ample room for horse trailers and camping equipment. Bathroom and shower facilities receive regular maintenance and cleaning. The campground offers a mix of sunny and shaded sites, though the equestrian area tends to have less tree coverage than other sections. Trails surrounding the campground are well-marked and maintained, providing direct access for riders. Sites are built with specific considerations for those camping with horses, though some campers note the layout can make positioning trailers challenging.

Located approximately 65 miles from Granville, Vermont, the campground connects to an extensive network of riding trails through the Adirondack region. Riders can access multiple trail systems directly from their campsites without needing to trailer horses to trailheads. The surrounding old-growth forest creates scenic riding opportunities with morning sun particularly favorable on west-facing sites. Trail maintenance receives positive attention from visitors, with clearly marked paths making navigation straightforward for new riders to the area. While the campground features excellent equestrian facilities, campers should arrive fully supplied as there are limited options for purchasing camping supplies or horse feed in the immediate area. A brewery located about a ten-minute walk from the campground provides an option for evening relaxation after a day of riding. The hot water temperature in the shower facilities may be insufficient during cooler weather.

    Frontier Town Campground

    So clean!

We stayed in site 33 which is in the equestrian camping area. It’s really open with little tree cover which is perfect for those who work remote using Starlink. We had fantastic connection. The sites in the equestrian camping area are huge and so clean. The bathrooms are the cleanest I’ve seen so far and we do this full time. The only disappointment was that the hot water doesn’t get very hot in the shower so you better do some jumping jacks to get pumped before showering during colder temps! The trails are well marked and well maintained. Overall, this is a fantastic campsite. There’s even a brewery a ten minute walk down the road. We didn’t go but looks nice. Get your supplies before you arrive! Not many places around to quickly grab charcoal if you need it.

    Clean and New

Sites are built wrong so it is hard to get you camper into your site correct. It is definitely catered to the equestrian part of the camping. I won’t be going back there anytime soon.

    New Discovery State Park Campground

Drove through on my way past

This easy-to-access campground has made it on my list of places to stay.

There are two loops of sites, some deep in the woods with great-looking trees, others in a field, and some in between. There are even sites with stalls if you're into horses.

The bathhouse looks typical and clean.

Not much cell service, but some in places.

Easy access to a lake and a picnic pavilion.

Noticed more than a few sites that I could hang at.

    Frontier Town Campground

New, very nice, with killer bugs

I was in site 43, it was long enough it could have fit two of the biggest RVs I have ever seen. My 75 foot starling cable did not even reach all the way back out to the road. I drove through the equestrian loop and found it very confusing. Lots of fences and shared pedestals. I stayed in the next loop, stagecoach. Everything looked spic and span like it had just opened last month. The young man at the check in station said there were very few people there except on the weekends. I only saw three or four other rVs and two of them had to camp right next to me. I saw the bugs, some of them clearly mosquitoes and I never saw one get away with biting me. But I ended up with two lower legs and two forearms that constantly itch like mad. I will never go back in June.

    AuSable Chasm Campground

    Beautiful Area

The workers are very accomodating. They are across the road from the Chasm to hike, Tube down the river , raft, rock climb , adventure course. They have a small store and rec room for kids. I think they are making improvements always. This camp ground is a short drive to Lake Placid, Plattsburgh, Vermont State and so much more. The Chasm has their own store and cafe

    AuSable Chasm Campground

    Cute and Quaint

Upon arrival, the front desk clerk was very nice and helpful. We found our way to the tent sites, nestled in the very back corner which for us was exactly what we like. Sites were a medium distance apart but still spacious enough to not be close to neighbors. Showers and restrooms were nearby and it being a weekday, there really wasn’t much traffic of campers or hikers. It was cozy and tucked into the woods with town only being a few miles away!

    Groton Forest Road Campground

    Horrible

If I could leave a no star rating, I would. To anyone who is looking to park there camper for the season, I recommend going elsewhere. The previous owner was a more reasonable guy and well respected. Save yourself the time and energy and do not sign a contract here, unless you want to later be told you have to leave for a reason that will not be discussed. The current owner is a dictator who likes to show favoritism. Please save yourself the trouble and try a different campground, there are plenty in the state of Vermont.

    New Discovery State Park Campground

    Interesting State Park

This state park has a little bit of everything. There are sites with electric hookups as well as some without. Some sites are in the middle of a grassy field while others are tucked in the trees. Site size various pretty vastly as you travel through the campground. There are two main loops, one is more secluded and spaced out than the other. The campground loops have bath houses, complete with coin operated showers. Park staff were attentive and restrooms were being cleaned with frequency.

There are more remote walk-in shelters on the Osmore Pond, located within New Discovery State Park. The shelters are rustic, have shared outhouses between a few sites, fire pits and small picnic tables. The remote sites are spaced nicely around the pond along a hiking trail that skirts the perimeter. The walk from the parking area to the shelters varies, depending what side of the pond you are camping on. If bringing a full-sized cooler(or other large/luxury car camping items) be sure you are heading to a site closer to the parking area. It would be a challenge to get some of those larger, heavier items to sites across the pond from the parking lot.

    AuSable Chasm Campground

    Beautiful/Fun Campground

I wish I had my bike!!! I didn’t know that this was a biking campground and there were SO MANY trails. Made the most of them with running, but overall, a fantastic campground. Showers were clean, staff was very friendly. Sites and attractions within walking distance (but busy roads to cross).

Guide to Granville

Frontier Town Campground in North Hudson, New York offers equestrian camping 65 miles from Granville, Vermont with direct access to Adirondack riding trails. Sites in the equestrian area feature spacious layouts designed for horse trailers and camping equipment. Trail systems connect directly to campsites, eliminating the need to transport horses to separate trailheads. The surrounding old-growth forest provides scenic riding experiences, with west-facing sites receiving favorable morning sunlight.

What to do

Trail riding with horses: At Frontier Town Campground, equestrian trails connect to campground sites. "This is a great home base to explore from the Lake George region to Ticonderoga to day hikes or cycling," notes camper Charles K. The trails accommodate various skill levels and are well-maintained.

Swimming in Lake Dunmore: Branbury State Park Campground offers lake access with designated swimming areas. "The day use section has a wonderful beach with a swimming area and boat launch. Large trees provide shade on a grassy lawn, and grills are available," reports Lisa S. The park maintains a supervised beach during summer months.

Water recreation rentals: Rental equipment available at multiple locations provides water access without hauling gear. "Fishing, kayak, canoe, paddle boat and paddle board rentals. There's a nature center with all kinds of information and activities," shares camper J L. at Branbury State Park. Daily rental rates typically range from $10-25 depending on equipment type.

What campers like

Private, spacious campsites: Campgrounds in this region offer good site separation. At New Discovery State Park Campground, "the sites are well separated and private. The grounds are beautiful and well situated to enjoy Groton State Forest," according to Robin B. Many sites feature natural buffers between camping areas.

Clean facilities: Maintenance standards remain high at most area campgrounds. At Frontier Town, one camper noted, "The bathrooms are the cleanest I've seen so far and we do this full time." Chelsea B. adds that "The sites in the equestrian camping area are huge and so clean."

Natural features: Area campgrounds integrate with surrounding landscapes. At AuSable Chasm Campground, campers appreciate the natural setting: "Sites were a medium distance apart but still spacious enough to not be close to neighbors. Showers and restrooms were nearby... It was cozy and tucked into the woods with town only being a few miles away!" reports Levi M.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate seasonally with limited shoulder season availability. Branbury State Park operates "Memorial Day weekend to Columbus Day weekend," requiring advance planning for peak summer weekends when sites fill quickly.

Wildlife awareness: Bear activity requires proper food storage. "Just make sure you put your food and trash away - there are black bears in the area!" warns Nicole E. from Branbury State Park. Bear-resistant containers may be required at some locations.

Variable site conditions: Site layouts and conditions differ significantly across campgrounds and within each facility. At Groton Forest Road Campground, sites offer "enough privacy between sites" with some located near water features. At Frontier Town, one camper noted "Sites are built wrong so it is hard to get you camper into your site correct."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds maintain playground facilities for children. "Spacious sites, hiking trails, biking trails, nice beach and grounds... A large playground. Volleyball and horseshoe pits," reports J L. at Branbury State Park, providing multiple activity options.

Nature programs: Educational opportunities enhance family camping experiences. "There's a nature center with all kinds of information and activities," notes J L. These programs typically run during peak summer months and may require sign-ups.

Child-friendly water options: AuSable Chasm Campground provides water features suitable for various ages. "Terrific location to hike the different trails of ausable chasm. Good sized site with electric and water. Shady but also had sun to dry our shoes from the raft tour," shares YM C. Supervised water areas provide safer experiences for families.

Tips from RVers

Power hookups: RVers should verify electrical service compatibility before booking. At Frontier Town, "the sites in the equestrian camping area are huge and so clean. The bathrooms are the cleanest I've seen so far and we do this full time. We had fantastic connection," reports Chelsea B., who notes the sites work well with Starlink for remote workers.

Site dimensions: Length constraints affect larger rigs at some campgrounds. "I was in site 43, it was long enough it could have fit two of the biggest RVs I have ever seen. My 75 foot starlink cable did not even reach all the way back out to the road," shares Butch K. from Frontier Town Campground.

Dump station access: Many campgrounds offer dump stations rather than full hookups. "No hookups are available but there is a dump station and a bathroom facility with paid showers," notes Trip Over Life at Branbury State Park. Some facilities have non-standard water connections requiring adapters.
