Luzerne Campground operates from May 19 to September 10 in Lake Luzerne, New York. The facility stands apart from standard Adirondack camping options with specialized equestrian camping sites approximately 80 miles from Brandon, Vermont. The campground connects to regional bridle trails with direct trail access from the property. Water access includes a small lake suitable for swimming and non-motorized boating activities.
What to do
Trail riding: Access multiple trail networks directly from Luzerne Campground without trailering horses. "We have been going to this campground for almost 15 years and my husband went here as a kid with his family. We always get the same site, for 15 years. My daughter loves it here," notes camper Antoinette W. about Luzerne Campground.
Fishing: Lake Dunmore at Branbury State Park provides excellent fishing opportunities with multiple access points. "The camp sites near the beach are in a large grassy field, and across the road, the campsites are wooded, and some have lean tos. The hiking trails nearby are very nice," explains Lisa S. about Branbury State Park Campground.
Kayaking: Rent boats at Luzerne or bring your own for lake paddling. "Love being on the far side of the lake with the private beach and no motorboats allowed. Tons of bike riding options. Great little lake for kayaking and fishing," shares Dan H.
What campers like
Private shower facilities: Campers consistently mention shower quality at equestrian sites. "The showers are so nice and private and clean. Love that we can rent boats too. Also, the little mom and pop store across the street is perfect for last minute needs and have the best homemade chocolate cream pie," notes a Luzerne camper.
Spacious equestrian sites: Horse-focused campsites provide substantial room. "We stayed in site 33 which is in the equestrian camping area. It's really open with little tree cover which is perfect for those who work remote using Starlink. We had fantastic connection. The sites in the equestrian camping area are huge and so clean," reports Chelsea B. about Frontier Town Campground.
Natural features: Many equestrian sites include waterfront access. "GREAT LOCATION! Small state run campground in the SE Adirondacks- plenty to do: tubing and white water rafting (spring) great hikes, horseback riding, canoe/kayaking, zip lines, great local food and breweries in the area," explains Troy H.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Horse campsites typically require advance booking due to limited availability. "The only campground in all of New York that acquires to house back riders. There are campsites that also come with stalls for your horse!" explains Brittnay B.
Seasonal considerations: Southern Adirondack horse campgrounds generally operate May through September. "Planning on revisiting next summer, even in august the nights get to a good sleeping temperature a vast majority of the time," notes Stephen T. about Branbury State Park.
Wildlife awareness: Bear activity requires proper food storage at equestrian sites. "There are bears in the area, so be aware and store all food properly. My family loves camping here," cautions Lisa S.
Tips for camping with families
Beginner-friendly riding areas: Families appreciate the calm riding environment. "My best friend and I took the kids to this campground and we loved it! Beautiful beaches, lots of places to hike and lots of places to take a bicycle and go exploring! We loved it here and will be returning!" shares Amy M.
Mixed activities: Equestrian campgrounds offer non-horse activities for family members. "We loved our weekend stay! My husband and I spent the weekend and loved it! We loved being deep in the woods! It was nice to have a little country store right across the street from the entrance of the campground," reports Emily B.
Swimming options: Most horse campgrounds include water access. "Spacious sites, hiking trails, biking trails, nice beach and grounds. Fishing, kayak, canoe, paddle boat and paddle board rentals. Theres a nature center with all kinds of information and activities," notes J L. about Branbury State Park Campground.
Tips from RVers
Site accessibility: RV sites at equestrian campgrounds often require careful navigation. "Sites are built wrong so it is hard to get you camper into your site correct. It is definitely catered to the equestrian part of the camping," cautions Sheri C.
Utility hookups: Most horse-friendly campgrounds offer limited RV services. "I was in site 43, it was long enough it could have fit two of the biggest RVs I have ever seen. My 75 foot starling cable did not even reach all the way back out to the road," explains Butch K.
Pre-arrival planning: Stock up before reaching horse campgrounds. "Get your supplies before you arrive! Not many places around to quickly grab charcoal if you need it," advises Chelsea B.
