At 4,360 feet in the White Mountains, Guyot Shelter sits well below the ridgeline but within striking distance of several 4,000-foot summits, making it a natural midpoint for multi-day routes like the Pemi Loop. Access requires a steep hike in, with the final drop from the main trail to the campsite adding 15 to 20 minutes of climbing on the way out. This is a carry-in, carry-out site with no road access whatsoever.
The site has more infrastructure than its backcountry setting might suggest. A renovated three-sided shelter, roughly 10 wooden tent platforms, three bear boxes, a composting outhouse, and a cold spring water source are all clustered within the camp. Platform views vary considerably, with some overlooking distant summits and others set back in the trees. The shelter fills quickly, especially on weekends, and the camp ranks among the busier backcountry stops in the Whites. Campers looking for more solitude can ask the on-site caretaker about overflow sites, which reviewers note are more private than the main platforms.
Non-freestanding tents will not work here. The ground around the platforms does not accommodate stakes reliably, so bring a tent that can stand on its own. Caretakers collect a fee, typically around $10 per night. "Composting outhouse was surprisingly very clean," notes Hollie G., a detail worth knowing given the site's heavy use. Nearby hut-based options like Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut provide additional staging points for routes through this part of the campgrounds near White Mountain National Forest. Campers who can manage the climb will find this a functional, well-maintained base for exploring the surrounding peaks.
