Bird Island Basin Campground — Padre Island National Seashore

Wind-driven camping defines the experience at Bird Island Basin, where consistent breezes make this National Park Service campground a magnet for windsurfers and a challenge for tent campers. The facility sits directly on the Laguna Madre side of Padre Island, offering calmer bay waters compared to the Gulf surf just miles away.

Twenty-plus RV sites accommodate big rigs without electrical hookups, while a designated tent area occupies a small beach section behind the main camping loop. Sites pack tightly together with minimal privacy, as reviewers consistently note the close quarters. Todd B. observes the campground is "mostly quiet, even when pretty full." Vault toilets anchor each end of the grounds, and a boat ramp with kayak launch sits 100 yards from the tent camping area.

The Intracoastal Waterway runs parallel to the shoreline, creating fishing opportunities for redfish and other saltwater species. A windsurfing rental shop operates steps from campsites, taking advantage of the area's reputation for consistent wind conditions. Cell service remains spotty to nonexistent throughout the park, and the nearest gas station sits 12 miles away.

Water fills are available at the visitor center, while showers require a two-minute drive to Malaquite Beach. Only three sites offer natural shade, filling quickly during peak periods. Bring a canopy and secure all gear against persistent coastal winds.

Campers regularly cited the waterfront location and affordable pricing as major highlights. Some visitors expressed disappointment with tight spacing and lack of electrical hookups, though the peaceful bayside setting compensated for basic amenities.

Beautiful shore camping

First come, first serve. Spots are very tight. Neighbors are VERY close. Mostly quiet, even when pretty full. Beautiful shore on the inland side of the island. Calmer waters with lots of windsurfers. Has vault toilets and large dumpsters. Can fill water at the visitors center. Dump station at the Maliquite CG is under construction so you have to leave the park to dump. Rangers were very friendly & helpful. Great night skies with not much light pollution. Great find. $8/night.

Windy

It’s windy most of the time. Perfect for windsurfing and fishing. There’s about a 50 foot waist high depth off of your campsite which is right next to the water. the wind is brutal to tents so be weary.

Nice and Calm

After spending time at PINS with the surf and soft sans, this was a good, calm change. The cost is less that the other side of the island, but it's so much better.

Hidden Oasis

Can’t say enough good things about this place. First time to Texas and was pleasantly surprised with the national park and this specific camp ground. The beach was closed for camping (September 17-21) due to high tides so I decided to stay at bird island basin. 20+ RV spots (without electric hookup so bring that generator) and a designated tent camping area on a small beach in the back of the grounds. Toilets at either side of the camp ground. Boat ramp and kayak launch 100 yards from the tent camping area. Also, if you’re a windsurfer, their is a rental shop and world class windsurfing 5 ft from your camp ground. I stayed for 5 nights and the cost was 40$ plus the 10$ park entrance fee for a weeks access. The intercoastal channel runs directly parallel to the beach and its teeming with redfish and plenty other species of saltwater fish. Showers are a 2 minute drive down the road to Malaquite beach and they also have a gift shop that sells ice (7.50 for 20 lbs). The only downside is their is no cell service until you leave the national park and the closest gas station and reasonably priced ice is 12 miles away. Also bring a canopy because their are only 3 spots with shade and they fill up fast.
