Come hitch your rig up at the Hitchin’ Post RV Park and Cabins then kick up your heels for some West Texas hospitality. Stay for a day or two… or a while. We have full hook-ups at all of our Texas sized RV sites, 50 and 30 amp electricity and Free Wifi. Want to get away, but don’t have an RV or don’t want to bring it this time, no worries, we have 4 fully furnished cabins. And you can sit out on the large porch and watch the stars all night if you want to. If camping in a tent is more your style, we have just the spot, or 10 to be exact. And we even throw in the added convenience of a nightlight and a set of outlets at each tent site, to charge your cell phone (so you don’t have to go completely off the grid on your camp out).

Located only 8 miles southwest of Quitaque, Texas and approximately 100 miles from Amarillo, Pole Canyon Ranch is accessible yet remote from the busy outside world. The ranch is managed by Phil and Lynnette Barefield, who is the granddaughter of Jim Taylor, who established the ranch in 1911. He and his brother John rode their horses into this area in December of 1910 in search of land. The ranch now encompasses about 6,000 acres of beautiful canyonlands with running water in several of the spring-fed creeks. Abundant game and beautiful scenery make each excursion a memorable adventure. Opening to the public in 2004, the ranch is now a destination attraction for folks all over the United States.

Honey Flat Camping Area — Caprock Canyons State Park

      First visit

Clean, quiet, cozy. Stayed 5 nights. You can hear owls and coyotes at night. A great hiking/mountain biking park. Buffaloes are easy to find in the park. There is a prairie dog town close to the camping area. I have knee trouble, and my wife uses a power chair. We still loved our stay.

State Park: Where the Buffalo Roam

We were able to find an opening for 1 night at the honey flat campground, and enjoyed the solitude, scenery and wild life. Had 30 Amp hookup with water. Dumpstation and bath facilities. The sites were good size with fire rings and shaded picnic tables. Need to be aware of texas wild life. Many hiking trails and staff at the information center were nice and helpful. Need to plan trip far in advance as sites fill up quick if you plan on staying for awhile.

Better than Big Bend and Palo Duro Canyon

I think that Caprock Canyons State Park is underrated, which is great for the people who visit. We'll definitely be back.

The campground is well maintained and easy to navigate. The views aren't as spectacular as they are at campgrounds in Palo Duro Canyon but BISON COME TO VISIT. Of course, to stay safe this often requires an exercise of patience. We were caught behind a heard of 12 or so on a hiking trail and maintaining a safe distance required a very leisurely pace, with lots of time to just take in the landscape. And we had to stand around and wait for another group to graze their way past our trailer on another occasion. But it was easy to keep our distance and they don't stay in one place long, so you just have to give them a few minutes. It was really neat to see these creatures roaming free--I thought it was a lot more exciting than seeing the herds in Yellowstone because there aren't the crowds of tourists.

      Nice park

A little complicated in terms of finding a place for camping if you have rooftops tents.

The designated tent places they have you have to walk into. Unless you want to be by all the RVs, which we don’t like. They have an overflow camping space, which was perfect for us. The place is very nice and has great views. We got visited by Bison at night and early this morning. Lots of coyotes howling at night and beautiful skies.

      Fair campground, good park

We’ve stayed at Honey Flats a couple of times over the past year and it’s worth a stop if you’re in the area and have never been. The Buffalo herd and prairie dog town are big hits with the kids and there’s good hiking trails in the canyon. Cell service is basically non-existent for both Verizon and AT&T. Honey Flats is a basic state park campground with power and water and pretty decent spacing between sites. If you visit in late Spring, the weather in this part of the state can get dicey in a hurry, we experienced several hail storms and wild thunderstorms in the few days we’ve spent at the park in the month of May.

      Amazing Buffalo herd

This is another fun close place for us on Weekends. This park has a huge buffalo herd that roams the park year round. Lots of other wild life & the trails are well maintained. Limit RV hookups but are well maintained & clean. Staff is very nice & helpful.

My Second Favorite State Park In Texas!!

This is a beautiful, undervalued State Park In Texas. I spent only one night here on my way to another TX State Park. It was fantastic!! This park has great facilities, spacious campsites and talk about animals. Bison & Prarie Dogs are the tow most popular animals at the park. Very unique to any park that I have visited in TX. The canyon views are spectacular as is the hiking in the park. I'm a photographer and got some beautiful Sunset and Sunrise photos. The park personnel were great and very helpful in pointing out some of he best photo opportunities in the park.

Wild Horse Equestrian Area — Caprock Canyons State Park

      A "memorable" stay

Let me preface this by saying that our woes during our stay here didn't really have anything to do with the campground or the hosts. Our stay here was, however, eventful.

We stayed here because this is the only area that the state rangers said was open... more on that later. We did find it interesting that there were only out of state license plates here... but again more on that later (and maybe a coincidence?)

It was toasty hot- we stayed in a roof top tent, so if you're not in a trailer, think about how you're going to stay cool.

Late at night our roof top tent became overrun with small cockroaches. Yes I said it. It sucked. We fought them off for probably an hour before we finally plugged all the holes in our tent. Then we still found a few and got them out. Next the coyotes came in our site. Yes. You read that right. They were within 10 feet of us. We pick up our sites meticulously before we go to bed and store our food properly. Howling next to your tent is very... ominous. Yes, let's go with that. Then the wind came. This is an equestrian park, so there are horse corrals all around you. Just something... eerie about horse corrals (that we closed by the way because of the creaking) opening and closing in the middle of the night. THEN came the birds at 4AM who were singing the song of their kind... yep.. you guessed it, right next to our tent.

Again- nothing to do with how the park is run, just our one night there. UNTIL- the next morning when we went and saw the RV portion of the campground. All. Texas. Plates. Full. Hookups. I bet they slept nicely. Could be a coincidence, but could not be- who knows! At the absolute very least- this gave us the most memorable story of our entire 6-week trip. So we are thankful for that. Also, cool fact- the Texas State Buffalo Herd lives here!

      Great view

Amazing time while there for a week. We spent most of our time traveling around the area to Lubbock. The campground is quite and spacious. The staff was great. We decided to leave a few days early and they refunded us the nights we didn’t stay.

Quiet place with Bison roaming the campground!

What a neat place!! The staff is great! The Rangers are friendly and helpful! The sites are pretty darn level and well spaced apart.(there might be an occasional Bison dropping in the way, but hey, I can deal with that!!) It is very clean and well maintained. It is well out of town, very peaceful. Night time, with no moon, star gazing and satellite tracking is terrific! Come see it for yourself and have fun!

      Beautiful & Hot

This campground is absolutely beautiful, and was excruciatingly hot. Given I was there one of the warmest days of the year. But no breeze, little shade.

The views are amazing and it's easy to get checked in. My dog loved hiking early hours when the sun just peeked up. Tons of views and wildlife.

      Beautiful canyon

My family stayed in the Caprock Canyon state park Honey Flats loop. Stunning views of the canyon are within a short walk from the campground. The paved pad at our site was level, and there was also a sheltered picnic table at the site. All sites were very spacious and felt private. A herd of bison along with their calves wandered through our campsite in the morning. We also spotted tons of prairie dogs, a coyote, a road runner, and rabbits. The playground was just okay, and the showers were unavailable when we visited due to plumbing problems, but the hiking and mountain biking trails along with the wildlife made it one of the best campgrounds we’ve stayed at.

Wild Horse Equestrian Area — Caprock Canyons State Park

A Spectacular Park with Surprising Scenery and Wildlife.

Created by the Red River, Caprock Canyon State Park, lies about 125 miles to the southeast of Palo Duro Canyon. While many similarities exist between the two state parks, the differences are striking. For starters, this park features the remaining heard of Southern Plains Bison (related to the Bison heard managed in Yellowstone N.P.) who wander the park roads and graze upon the local vegetation. So, keep your speed down and pay attention around every corner, especially at night!

We stayed in the Equestrian Camp (water only, no toilets, no electricity so come prepared with your solar panel).   Spacious sites, corrals for horses at each site, and one very squeaky windmill that will keep you awake at night if it's windy, which it always is.  Try to get a spot that is NOT right next to it!  The campground has a gate to keep wildlife out and horses in.  You'll have to open and close it each time you leave/return.

Hiking might just be the best way to see this park, but miles and miles of horse trails offer an unique experience from the saddle. Many trails crisscross the dry washes so pay attention to your trail markers so you don’t get turned around. Opportunities to hike up to the highest point in the park are strenuous but well worth the effort. So too is the hike back to the year-round springs that keep the wildlife running.

The nearby town of Quitaque also has an ice/water kiosk and a convenience store which is less than 5 miles away.  The closest town with a real grocery store and restaurants is Plainview, about 55 miles away.

Beautiful Canyon and Camp, decent facilities

A nice park with lots of camp sites. RV hook ups, and lots of dispersed camps around the pack. Some are hike or horse in sites.

Nestled in a beautiful canyon with tons of trials for hiking or horseback.

Park also has a small lake, Lake Theo, which holds some really nice fish.

The herd of Buffalo roam the park, and will visit your camp in the early mornings!

The scenery is beautiful, with the canyon and the wildlife, but of all the state parks I've visited so far, this ranks the lowest based on facilities, and staff.

Showers were closed when we arrived, and we only found out by being met with locked door on our first morning. No notice when booking our reservations.

Bathroom doors were open, and there was a ton of insects all over the place. The bathroom was in need of some minor repairs, and could have used a good cleaning.

The camp was maintained tho, and overall we had a good trip. I had higher expectations from a Texas State Park, but oh well. The park itself is beautiful, so Ill still visit based on that alone.

Do not tent camp here. They mislead you and then fine you $200

Do not tent camp here. They will mislead you and then give you a huge fine!!! When we booked the campsite as a fun activity for our pandemic fatigued 6-year old granddaughter, they told me our car would be close to our campsite. We get there at 4 on a Friday afternoon in November and we were the only people in sight! When we booked, they told us to go into the park and find our tent site by ourselves because park personnel were avoiding interacting due to Covid. We got to our sight and found the gate locked to the whole area. It was clear people had driven around the gate several times. Thinking they had forgotten their sole campers for the night and had not come and unlocked the gate, we drove around it. We were very concerned about having to put up the tent in the dark, which was descending upon us. We went down a road to our campsite. While we were unloading, a state police officer came and gave us a$200 fine for going around the gate. It was devastating and disappointing. We wanted our granddaughter to have some fun during all the pandemic restrictions. We were treated horribly.

Well maintained and accessible canyon exploration

      Wild Horse Campground Spot 74

I showed up at the welcome center with a reservation for primitive camping, not realizing the only spot to set up my RTT would be the parking lot. A nice lady working the desk, slide me into a spot that had cancelled earlier that day at the Wild Horse Campground.

Wild Horse is the equestrian camp and each spot has horse pens, picnic table, fire ring(though burn ban was in effect while we stayed) and water. No restrooms. The campground is behind a drive through gate that you have to close to keep the buffalo out.

Only one slot had horses while we were there. Several had mountain bikers staying in them. Everyone besides us and the horse folks were in ground tents. Plenty of room for us and the horse trailer setup didn’t look too cramped either. Slots are well spaced out, but not much privacy– see tree comment below.

Not much shade to be had except what little you get from scrubby mesquites, but if you are looking for lots of shade, this probably isn’t the park for you. The park itself is great. Easy to get around. Lots of well-marked trails. Bring water and what for snakes. Gorgeous canyon views and features.

      Very quiet after sundown.

Quitaque(kitty-quay) is a couple of miles from the main entrance and has a convenience store, a grocery store and a couple of cafes. We drove ten miles further to Turkey, Texas for dinner– very cool setup at Hotel Turkey. Good food, good music and fun casual outdoor atmosphere. Be sure to check their website for hours. Speaking of website, we had no service on Verizon cellular except very slow spotty connections from 10 pm to 7 am. Service in Quitaque and Turkey was very spotty and very slow.

Definitely glad we stopped here. Wouldn’t hesitate to do so again.

      Parking lot

Good water pressure. Good amount of space between sites. ‘bout all I can say good about it. Call for res — do not use online system as you will be charged $5 for booking online. This should have been disclosed before payment. On second thought don’t reserve at all as there are plenty of empty spaces. Hard to get to from SB I-27 exit 51. I should have followed GPS to get off at exit 53. I was towing a car so had to pull through to clear road (almost clear). Since hook-ups are at the rear of the site I had to leave the toad in the road just a little and use two sewer hoses. 25’ water hose barely reached. Site is long enough and gravel covered. However when I pulled-through I had to drive on a field of dirt to leave. Glad it dint rain. I suppose $40 (35 Goodsam) isn’t too bad just don’t expect much.

Honey Flat Camping Area — Caprock Canyons State Park

      Nice State Park Campground

Honey Flat is located within Caprock Canyon State Park about one hour south of Amarillo Texas. The park has great facilities and it’s own heard of bison. The canyon is at the end of the Honey Flat Campground. Although smaller than Palo Duro Canyon it’s a beautiful red canyon photo op. The park also has popular well stocked fishing lake. Honey Flat Campground can host guests from tent camper to large 5th wheels and RVs. Depending on the location each site has some degree of privacy along with electrical and water hookups. They also have picnic tables with shelter, fire rings, and poles to hang shower bags and camp gear. They have a nearby dump station as well. The restrooms are located just north of the campgrounds along with a great playground for the kids. Homely flats is usually crowded on weekends especially during the fall and spring. I would recommend making a reservation a few months in advance. The park staff are very friendly and efficient. We like to stop over at Caprock during our trips up to Colorado and the Utah.
