Martin Creek Lake State Park Campground

    Lake Martin Creek SP

Very clean and well kept park. Camp sites are across the lake from a Texas Utilities generating plant and it is loud. You do get used to it but if that sort of thing bothers you I wouldn’t recommend this park.

    Good park

This park seems to be a good fit for boaters and Fishermans , not the best hiking trails but there still there, little hike on the island ,is OK, and the other trails I went on did not look like they’ve been used a lot, but again the parks are just re-opening. The RV is well shaded the toilets and showers are Nice and clean. Nice two way drive-through dumpsite. Price with the Texas park pass for one night. $13 . AT&T 2-3 bars

    First State Park Experience

This was our first experience at a Texas State Park. Overall, the park is clean and well maintained. There are three hiking trails that are between 1.2-1.5 mile each, so we easily accomplished all 3 with our 4 year old. There is decent spacing between camp sites. There is a nice fishing pier, boat launch, and fish cleaning station. Sites are water and electric only, dump station only. All the sites seem well shaded and a decent amount have lake views. Very relaxing trip and a great way to spend the first cool weekend of the fall season. I am only deducting one star because of the noise of the power plant across the lake from the park. While I know it’s out of the park’s control, it’s just something to be aware of. It can be heard from anywhere in the park and takes away from the natural vibes of camping in a state park.

Full hookups in the pine trees

Took a chance on this campground because many reviews on various websites  were bad and many were old...Used to be a TX state park but was "decommissioned" evidently. It is not the most maintained campground, but it is a small loop with pull-in sites w/ full hookups. The bathroom didnt seem maintained much, but we have a camper, so don't have need for the bathrooms. The texas state RR train engine car came through one time in the afternoon to turn around to pull the train back to palestine...that's pretty unique and a cool thing at a campsite IMO.

our group loved this place--albeit a very different experience if you are used to well-maintained KOAs etc, but for those that are self contained and just want to hang out/camp, it's a cool place. Had a nice walk around the historic train depot and the little pond behind it. we camped in october and It was very "fall vibes" with all the super tall pine trees and we thought it was a hidden gem and appropriately priced for what you get (ie: it's not priced like a KOA, so don't expect similar amenities--but there are good things about that too--it's not packed with people!!). Not sure I'd make a super long destination out of it if you're  too far away, but We will be back since it's close to camp here!

    Quaint Wooded Poorly Maintained Campground

This is an X-Texas State Park that really needs some overdue TLC.

After making reservations over the phone 163 days prior to arriving and prepaying the entire amount, we were told at check-in there was no record of our reservation. Once we got through that confusion we were had to ask for directions to the campground. No map provided. Even with a reservation campsite are selected once you arrive and drive through the campsite. FHU loop roadway was difficult to maneuver due to the roadway being covered with pine needles which blended it into the non-roadway. We saw most people driving thru campsites thinking it was the road as the FHU loop were mostly pull-thru sites. Limited sites for RVs longer than 30 feet. Most sites were designed for 20 feet or smaller. Not a slide-out friendly campground as most sites were very compact. Minimal vegetation between sites. At our site the wooden picnic table was partially rotted. Parking pad broken up by roots so very uneven surface. The firepit ring was mostly rusted away and was completely filled with ash so our fire was on the pi ash. Sulphuric smelling water. Highway noise. On our last night, the 30 amp breaker kept tripping without a full load. Happened twice within an hour so we scaled back our amp use under 20 just to have some heat during the night. Campground WiFi was probably one of the best we’ve experienced.

Highway noise even in our campsite the furthest from the highway.  Of course, lots of train whistles during depot operations.

    New Favorite State Park

We stayed at the primitive campgrounds on the island and it was just perfect. The entire park was booked up for Friday night, and we got the very last site. I really lucked out with this spot I was so happy to be on the island. There was this factory next door but it added a weird sort of atmosphere that I liked. When we hiked the trail around the island and it was just gorgeous. The closest bathrooms were the best I’ve seen at a park, but they didn’t hav showers, but that wasn’t a big deal for one night. I didn’t get to see the rest of the park but if it’s anything like the island it’ll be amazing.

    Primitive Camping

My wife and I did our first camp at Martin Creek Lake state park the other week. It was a great smaller state park. We highly recommend their primitive camping option on the island. Remember to bring your wagon, the parking lot is a good 70 yards to the camp sites.

    Power plant close by

This is another great state park, nice trails, fishing, piers, beautiful! For us the power plant across from the campgrounds bothered us at night a little. Theres a train that runs in front of it too, but only heard that a few times. Other than that we loved it!

    Great campgrounds

We stayed in mid November 2017. Weather started off a little warm on Friday, 81F. Again on Saturday with a high of 82F but a cold front came through and dropped the temperature over night to 37F. Large campsites on the the lake shore with many trees around. Our campsite had a spot to put in the lake with our kayaks. Restrooms were near by and very clean. Bring your own soap as the Star Parks do not provide any in restrooms.

Great hiking trails on the island. Other trails allow bikes.

Screened Shelter - BEST EVER! and oddly, no mosquitoes !?

There are many options to camp at this state park. There’s RV sites, tent sites (both primitive and “cushy”), cabins, cottages and screened shelters. my past experience with screened shelters were always dusty, dank, spider-filled shacks that I would only store my cooler and belongings in (tightly sealed) but these at Martin Creek were IMMACULATE to say the least! They seem cob-webby from the outside but once inside, the concrete floor is smoother up the edges of the walls about 2.5’, reducing entry of insects via cracks in the joints of floor and wall. The park employees vacuum these areas, as observed when I passed others that had recently vacated. The rafters in these shelters were spaced out far enough for me to hang my hammock. 4 people slept inside without air mattresses or camp pads and slept wonderfully (flat surfaces are good for our spines sometimes) not a big in sight. There is an electrical outlet inside as well as a light, and there is an outlet outside as well. Small lock on inside, watr spigot and doIble lantern hook nearby as well as a wooden/metal picnic table (good condition). I slept in Shelter #6 and it was a few yards away from the water’s edge. Great views of a small lilly-pad laced bay and we caught 7 catfish using normal nightcrawlers as bait. Fried them up for lunch the next day and they tasted like heaven! But, everything tastes better when you’re camping. We had also set up 4 tents around the area (not disturbing local flora/fauna) and we slept to the deafening croaks of frogs. Only 1 raccoon came upon our camp area to a spot where someone had thrown a corn cob, otherwise, we take all the necessary steps to avoid crossing paths with those relentless nighttime furry bandits. Shelters 7-9 are also located in great areas of the lake nearby, there is the power plants across the lake and for some reason, we like to believe that it was the reason we had ZERO mosquitoes! Many house flies and the non-biting ants were everywhere but not to the point of insanity... they list this ant as an issue on their website I do believe. I’d take this shelter over a hotel stay ANY TIME!

    Nice Overnight Stay but Beware...

We stayed one night at Martin Creek Park in our travel trailer on our way to the next destination. Site 40 was wooded and very spacious. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring and ours had water and electric. There was a dump station available. The other reviewers mention the ants, but we didn’t have any problems with them. The noise from the power station droned constantly at a low hum but was easy to tune out. We arrived early and I hiked all three trails, which were easy to follow but not that well marked where they crossed. There are some unbelievably tall Loblolly Pines back on the trails - simply amazing! My ‘beware’ is that there is an abundance of Poison Ivy around. So if you are bothered by that be very careful. This was a very nice park and I would stay again for an overnight. Paid $19 a night.

STATE PARK NEXT TO POWER PLANT

Once again our timing was great as this state park was only about 1/4 full. Sites were level and as with most SP's, plenty of room. Nice wooded park, lots of deer and a nice island to hike on. Power plant isn't all that bad, but then again we weren't right on the water where you would be able to hear it more. Nice facilities.

    Good time!

Just got home from outer first trip to Martin Creek Lake St Park. We had a good time. Though I grew up camping, my wife was slow to come around to it. We took our 3 kids and camped on their primitive island. We enjoyed the hiking trail, playground and did some fishing. We got a spot on the point of the island and had pretty much the whole island to ourselves. Overall we had a good time and would suggest it to anyone else!

Pretty okay place would go back again.

There’s 10 tent camping spots on the island. Our camp had trash on the beach when we got there. You can hear the power plant all the time. The hike was pretty and we got to see a deer with two fawn. Tons of buzzerds on the trail who defend their young. We camped the beginning of October and there was only one other tent around. Nice view from P1.

    Nice but Noisy

There's a power plant over there. Didn't know that when I booked my site.

Nice short distance hiking trail, I enjoyed quite a bit.  The sites were clean, well kept. The bathrooms were also clean (Always a good thing to have!) Lots of fishing boats, and plenty of room for parking for the day.

    I'd camp there again.

    Pop-Up Thunderstorm

Nice access to the lake. Campground hosts are very helpful, gate is locked at night so keep the email with the code if you want in late or out early. We got caught in a pop-up shower with the rain fly off lol but then again, that’s camping.

    Great spot for the kiddos!

Super nice staff and full saturday breakfast (eggs/bacon/pancakes/coffee etc--extra fee, but very reasonable!)

Pool, jump pad, playground, trike rentals, Rock/gem mining slough, movies/events, etc.

Sites are level pull-through sites and most have a clear view of the playground, which gives the kids a sense of freedom.  They have cabins and cool teepees as well, but have only ever camped in RV here.

Have been camping here in the summers and both Easter & Halloween weekends and they do easter egg/candy hunts and have other events for the kids/kids at heart.

We love coming here and the staff are always very kind to us. (photos on this review are during the halloween event--we decorated our campsite lol)

    Great bunch of people

This campground really has no outside noise from anywhere. It is wonderfully quiet. The office and other working staff are very friendly and informative about things to do in the area. The wifi is strong, and the sites are level. we will definitely be back to stay in the area again on our trips through.
