Equestrian camping facilities near Hemphill, Texas offer access to the pine forests of Sabine National Forest. This eastern Texas region features relatively flat terrain with elevations ranging between 200-300 feet above sea level. Most horse campgrounds maintain primitive amenities with vault toilets and limited facilities, though some provide water access during non-winter months.
What to do
Trail riding in Kisatchie National Forest: Lotus Camp provides access to the Sandstone Trail with wide paths suitable for horses and hikers. "Inside the Kisatchie National Forest, Kisatchie District Lotus campground offers water, flush toilets and easy access to the Sandstone Trail," notes Paula W. at Lotus Camp.
Fishing opportunities: The nearby Sexton Pond offers fishing with occasional slow periods. "I got lucky enough had the place to myself for almost 2 weeks, give or take the few groups that tried to tough the biting fish. I will share a tip. They seem to sit dormant at 10pm and 3am for a hour each," advises Yasmin S. at Sexton Pond Dispersed.
Lake activities: Lake Sam Rayburn provides swimming and water recreation options during summer months. "We enjoyed hiking in the morning, and then playing in the lake mid morning-afternoon. There were tons of people swimming, boating, tubing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding," explains Analia F.
What campers like
Secluded camping spots: Hunter Camp offers peaceful sites during non-hunting seasons. "My wife and I camped here just before memorial day and had the entire campsite to ourselves. I imagine during hunting season this camp is quite busy, however we found it very peaceful in the off months," shares Danny H. at Hunters Camp.
Spacious tent areas: The tent camping areas at Ebenezer Park provide room to spread out. "Tent spots are spacious, although most sites do require a decent walk from the car," mentions Frutsnx.11.
Well-maintained access roads: Roads to dispersed sites are generally passable for most vehicles. "Down a hard packed gravel road. A few potholes but nothing major. Nice spot in the trees," reports Jennifer M. about her experience at Sexton Pond.
What you should know
Limited bathroom facilities: Some campgrounds have minimal toilet facilities that may not be well maintained. "There is only 1 bathroom within the campground, or at least what we could find. It was a porta-potty style, and smelt so bad. Not sure how often they clean it, but it was pretty bad," warns Analia F.
Seasonal popularity changes: Horse campgrounds experience significant usage fluctuations. "The area is VERY busy during hunting season," cautions N I. at Oak Camp Complex.
Insect preparation essential: The wooded environment hosts various biting insects. "Because of its location so deep in the woods mosquitoes, horseflies, and yellow flies were in abundance. Using a therma cell was perfect at keeping them at bay," recommends Danny H.
Tips for camping with families
Bring extra toilet paper: Bathroom supplies may run out at busier times. "Thankfully we came prepared and brought our own toilet paper, because by the 2nd night we were there, there was no toilet paper in the bathroom," shares Analia F.
