    Vernon L Richards Riverbend Park

    Overnight camping

We arrived around 11:30 pm to the park and was stopped by a very helpful officer that explained to us the park was closed, but helped us get a spot anyways and directions. Got to the spot and it was more than I expected for a camp site (electricity, fire ring pit, table, Barbque pit, and trash cans with bags). We set up tent quickly, made a fire, and had a great time with the kids!

    Splashway Campground

Awesome park with tons of activities!

Campsites are a little close together, but well equipped otherwise. Went for The water park, which is a blast, and campsites are within easy walking distance. There are a ton of other activities as well - putt-putt, laser tag, paddle boats, fishing, etc. also had curbside trash pickup which was nice.

Would have been nice if there were some incentives for the water park for campers - early entrance, or discount, but that would be the only thing I would add.

    Splashway Campground

    Rocky Creek, Somerville

First time there and was really impressed with this campground. The slots are a great price and big sites, most have a metal pavilion over the picnic table, which was convenient. Sites are very level, wide and deep. All the sites have great views of the lake and even if you aren’t on a lake front, there is plenty of access to the lake all around the grounds. Paved roads which was great for bikes or even electric scooters. Wooded trails and lots of wildlife. Lots of deer all over the grounds in the evening variety of birds. The campground sites on a giant peninsula, which gives so much shoreline, which is managed by the Army Corp. of Engineers, so it’s well maintained and undeveloped. Multiple boat ramps and sites that are on the shoreline, which have a shallow bank, so you can Anchor your boat right off the bank and have walk up access to your campsite and boat. Wild Bills is right across the street, which has all the little things you may have forgot to bring or ability to restock on some beverages and snacks. It’s a 10-15 min bike ride from your campsite or a 5 min drive. Very convenient. Bryan, Tx is only 25 mins away and has a Super Walmart with Curbside service if you need to grab something more specific or a larger grocery order. Quick and easy. College Station was about 45mins away and it’s all easy driving.

It can get pretty windy if you book a slot down lower at the tip of the peninsula, but they will let you swap spaces whenever you want to if there is something available. The campsite up the hill are pretty protected from the wind, so regardless of the wind they have options if it’s more than what you want to deal with. Definitely my place to camp when visiting Somerville. They also let me check-in early when the previous camper left early, so I really appreciated that as well.

    Vernon L Richards Riverbend Park

Vernon L. Richards Riverbend Park + Family Fun + Colorado River + Rodeo!

I came across this campground while searching on thedyrt. I had not previously heard about this park, so I decided to check it out. The park is operated by the City of Smithville. There is not a park office on the grounds to accept reservations or fees for camping. To reserve a campsite, call the City Recreation Center at 512-237-3282x7 Mon-Fri, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

There are a number or recreational facilities at the park such as a playground, baseball field and frisbee golf course. The Colorado River runs along one side of the park and offers opportunities for paddling and fishing. One of the most unique features is that there are rodeo facilities on the grounds. The rodeo events only occur during certain times of the year, so check the park's website and calendar.

The campground area is at the very back of the grounds down a gravel road. The park is primarily designed to host RVs, but they do allow tent camping. Each site has a parking pad, water and electric hookup, picnic table and grill. There are bathroom facilities in the center of the campground.

Compared to some of the other parks in the area such as Bastrop State Park, Buescher State Park and Lake Bastop South Shore Park, this city park is a little bit rough around the edges. The reservation system, or lack of an onsite office, is a bit baffling. But if you're looking to witness a rodeo, this might just be your only option.

    Thousand Trails Colorado River

A TT campground which was comfortable

The river is a beautiful site no doubt. The campgrounds are older and could use a bit of updating. We were close to the river. Was a bit disappointed as when booking through TT website, it said full hook ups when we arrived, only Water and Electric were available. ( reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars }Not a big issue as we were only there for a couple nights and as full-timers, we have a system down pat where our rig could stay off a sewer line for at least 7-10 days. All in all, its a nice place to come and relax, not too much to do if your a family. Clean restrooms and showers.

    Thousand Trails Colorado River

    Quiet and Peaceful

Overall pretty good experience, however the mosquitoes are annoying. We left with so many mosquito bites that it’s ridiculous. The grounds could be better kept i.e cutting the grass. Very clean bathrooms and competent staff. We originally had parked close to the river but had to relocate due to storms.
