Cabin camping near Henning, Tennessee offers outdoor experiences within a 75-mile radius of this small western Tennessee town. Located in Lauderdale County at approximately 400 feet elevation, the area features mixed hardwood forests and proximity to the Mississippi River watershed. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, making spring and fall the preferred seasons for outdoor activities.
What to do
Horseback riding trails: Chickasaw State Park maintains dedicated equestrian facilities for riders of all skill levels. "My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our maiden voyage to Chickasaw State Park this past weekend. The campsite for RVs was full so we decided to camp with the Wranglers! It was so beautiful and peaceful!" reports Brandon C. from Chickasaw State Park Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Lake Placid at Chickasaw State Park offers freshwater fishing with boat rentals available. "We even bought our fishing license for this year while camping! We didn't know one could do this at a campsite," notes a visitor. The ponds at Serendipity Resort also provide fishing spots for cabin guests.
Hiking and nature trails: Several marked trails traverse the region's forests. "I hiked both the Woodland and Pioneer Springs trails, each about 4 miles and along the way enjoyed just taking in the outdoors. I will say that if you do any trails in late summer here you will need mosquito spray because they come in droves," advises Crystal C. who stayed at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.
What campers like
Private, wooded campsites: Many visitors appreciate the natural seclusion at certain parks. "This park has tons of trees. Every site feels like it was cut right out of the trees. They are all RV sites with electric and water but I pitched a tent with no problem," explains Richard who stayed at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.
Family-friendly amenities: Recreational facilities keep children entertained. "There is 2 more 24hr toilet/shower stalls in the lower half of the camp store. The camp store is open 8-8. The camp store has most of your daily needs such as ice and toiletries and firewood," details Nathan B. from Serendipity Resort.
Wildlife viewing: The area supports diverse forest animals. "It has a pond in the rear with fishing allowed. Deer come out in the evening. Can see the stars at night," describes Shay A. about SK campground. Visitors frequently report deer sightings at dusk around cabins and campsites.
What you should know
Seasonal mosquito conditions: Insect protection is essential during warmer months. "Unless you are in love with mosquitos you may want to stay away from here in the summer. I'm from the south so mosquitos are pretty much the norm for summer, so they didn't deter us," advises Andrew S. about Meeman-Shelby.
Cellular service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between locations. "Proximity to Memphis was a plus, however, we had 0 service anywhere near our campsite. Nice to disconnect for a night, but plan accordingly," warns Ellie B. about her stay at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.
Cabin booking competition: Reservations fill quickly during peak seasons. "First come basis, we were second to arrive around 5pm and more came in later but there were spaces available next morning (they have a total of 18 pull-through and 9 back-in sites, concrete pads)," notes Sharon about Lady Luck Casino and RV Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several parks maintain dedicated children's areas. "I was a first time camper and didn't know what to expect. I can say that it was very serene and relaxing. Areas are very clean kid friendly playgrounds. Each space was far enough but not but also in proximity to each other for those who afraid to camp out somewhere totally alone," reports Nicole from Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.
Swimming facilities: Water recreation options vary by location. "Cute little campground that would be greatly improved by being further away from the interstate. It looked like it would be a fun place to stay for awhile, especially if you have bigger kids. There's big trikes to ride, a playground, and a basketball net," observes Inez W. about KOA Campground Memphis Marion.
Food service options: Some campgrounds offer meal delivery. "Very impressed they have breakfast and dinner + they deliver right to ur site! My dog LOVES the dog park ~ the swimming pool looks nice and showers bathrooms are some of the best I've seen," reports Kari K. about Memphis KOA.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling considerations: Terrain varies significantly between campgrounds. "This campground was renovated over the last year and there appears to be a few things left to be done but overall a nice, pleasant escape from town. Be prepared to have a drive to town for provisions & restaurants. The sites are all paved with fire rings, grills & picnic tables. Most sites appear to be fairly level," notes Jennifer K. about Chickasaw State Park.
Entry access for larger vehicles: Some locations have challenging approaches. "This nice little gem was a great find for the wife and I. Pulling in was tight, but anyone worth their salt driving can get in with no problems," explains Christopher N. who stayed at SK campground. RVers should call ahead to confirm accessibility for their specific vehicle dimensions.
