Artillery Ridge Campground sits adjacent to the historic Gettysburg battlefield at an elevation of approximately 500 feet. The region features rolling hills and wooded terrain typical of south-central Pennsylvania's countryside. Located about 40 miles from Loganville, the campground serves as a central hub for equestrian camping with trail access that connects directly to significant Civil War sites.
What to do
Battlefield exploration on horseback: Take a guided tour from Artillery Ridge Campground to experience the historic landscape. "The whole campground was clean and well kept. Ths campground is approximately a 3 minute drive from everything in the town of Gettysburg. The battefields are very close as well," notes Dave B.
Fishing in stocked ponds: Cast a line at Gettysburg Campground where creek access provides relaxing fishing opportunities. "Great spot. Nice creek with ducks. Close to battlefield," writes Jenny P. in her review.
Hiking to scenic overlooks: Challenge yourself on the Flat Rock Trail at Colonel Denning State Park Campground for panoramic views. "Our family of six made the trek up the Flat Rock Trail to the overlook. A six mile round trip with a 1200 ft climb. Spectacular views," shares reviewer Nate & Erika L.
What campers like
Private equestrian sites: Many riders appreciate the secluded spots at Artillery Ridge Campground. "We had a site right on next to the trail going to Stangler Farm. AT&T cell reception at our site was hit or miss, but good in the rest of the campground," reports Dave B.
Creek-side camping: Sites along waterways offer natural background sounds and recreation options. At Gettysburg Campground, "Really nice place. Recommend a site by the creek. Cool laid back staff and clean bathrooms nice playground for kids," according to Brandon W.
Free primitive camping: Budget-conscious equestrian campers can find no-cost options at Michaux State Forest. "Camping is free in several areas throughout Michaux State Forest (as well as other PA State Forests), BUT you usually need to have a camping permit (also free) and you can only stay in designated campsites," explains Jen S.
What you should know
Camping permit requirements: For state forest camping near Loganville, be aware of documentation needs. In Michaux State Forest, "Designated motorized sites require a free online permit and are open April 2 until the 3rd Sunday after Thanksgiving," states Bridget D.
Winter camping options: Extended stays are available during off-season at some locations. At Artillery Ridge Campground, "The lady in the office are AMAZING (JENN AND SUE), and they answered all questions we had...they got us a great deal for are winter site we were in spots 86,85,89 for a month long stay... which they do during the winter!!" reports lakota M.
Site layouts and privacy: Campground designs vary widely in the area. At Hibernia County Park, "First, there is absolutely no privacy. The campsites are right next to each other with hardly any trees. The more dense woods is on the other side of the trail. You can see everything other campers do any they can see everything you're doing."
Tips for camping with families
Swimming options: Little Buffalo State Park Campground offers excellent water recreation for children. "They offer a large area that is only 1 foot deep, great for little ones! There is also a splash pad! There are 2 slides for fun!" explains Amanda H.
Ranger-led programs: Look for educational activities run by park staff. At Colonel Denning State Park, "The park rangers had an owl program on Friday night and ended up calling in several screech owls. Very cool to hear their eerie cries in the woods," shares Nate & Erika L.
Special weekend events: Plan around scheduled activities for added entertainment. "The camp store has everything that any camper could need, and the game room is really nice. Fun filled weekend of activities for the whole family," notes Zack from Artillery Ridge.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at many local campgrounds. At Starlite Camping Resort, "We had two sites this trip with water and electric, but they do have quite a few full hook-up sites. Overall the sites were large, with trees between, providing additional privacy. Except for the Plateau sites, which have the amazing view, the rest of the campground had a great tree cover!" reports Craig F.
Hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement when selecting sites. At Colonel Denning State Park, one camper noted they "stayed in site 42, which was not the greatest layout (electric was on the wrong side of the site for our door and canopy to open to the fire ring)."
Seasonal considerations: Book early for prime equestrian camping near Loganville during peak seasons. "If you're looking for a backwoods, off-the-beaten-path type of campground, this isn't it. If you are looking for a campground that is very close to an historical National Park not to mention shopping and restaurants, this is for you," explains Jim G. about Gettysburg Campground.
