Farewell Bend State Recreation Area Campground

Just a Hop Skip and Jump away from Idaho

Living in Idaho near the border of Idaho, I was looking for a great catfishing spot on the Snake River. I found this campground along the Snake just on the other side of the border - eastern Oregon. The campgrounds are AWESOME!!! The have all the amenities for RV camping. They do have tent camping sites as well. There is some great history of the area and we were appreciative of how the State Park system displayed it. Great fishing for the shore angler as well as boat anglers. I fished from my kayak and caught crappie and catfish as well as some smallmouth bass. I would definitely camp here again. They do have a dump station for RVs as well as restrooms. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table.

    Wallowa Lake State Park Campground

    Clean and quiet

This campground is a nice well maintained place with clean facilities and well dispersed sites. It was a bad fire season when we were there so it’s pretty smoky in my picture.

Clean bathrooms scattered throughout, water available. Nice tree cover and a River right at the edge of where we were. There’s trails and the lake close by too. Picnic tables and nice fire pits.

It was a very quiet place and has several loops in the campground.

McCall RV Resort - Northfolk Lodge

The Best RV Campsite in McCall, Idaho!!!

We reserved a spot here to prepare for a rafting trip we had won from the McCall WinterFest. We are so glad we did!!! This place ROCKS! We have a 27' Travel Trailer RV and we reserved a full hook-up site. The staff was friendly and we were escorted the staff to the site we reserved. The location is nice and quiet, awa from traffic. They have a nice lodge with an indoor heated swimming pool. Each site had a picnic table but no fire pit where we stayed. We had a portable grill to cook our meals. The property is very clean and the staff is ver friendly. Can't ask for anything more!

    A-Frame RV Park

    Good overnight

We did not have a reservation for an overnight stop. We lucked out. They had a spot for our 30ft TT. The site was level enough we didn't even have to unhook. Great hosts. My electric cord was too short to go plug in. He loaned me two adapters and a 50amp cord to make it reach. No charge. The bathhouse is in an A frame building so when you look in the mirror to shave you see your feet. Other than that a great stop. They don't do Good Sam discounts.

Peninsula Campground — Ponderosa State Park

If You Like A Fish Bowl

This campground boasts lovely showers and bathrooms. All well and good if you like to be in a fishbowl. There is no privacy between camp spaces. The rangers do not enforce the quiet hour rule and you get woken up in the middle of the night by screaming kids. Not my idea of a fun camping experience.

Farewell Bend State Recreation Area Campground

    A treat after dispersed camping

Though not free like the dispersed camping the dog and I were doing the days before this, it was a treat to have warm showers, bathrooms, a fenced dog exercise area, the security of other campers, and a picnic table to cook on. I stayed in a more "isolated" campsite with a tree screen from the other sites, because my dog is very protective. But it looked like there were great view sites further in the campgrounds, for those who don't need the privacy. There was easy river access from the camp and you can hear the coyotes yipping in the morning.

Farewell Bend State Recreation Area Campground

History, water, and an easy stop off the highway

Farewell bend is on the Snake River and has plenty Oregon Trail history to boot. It has shade trees, which is special for the area. Not much privacy. It has good bathrooms, water access, and nice views of the surrounding hills. It has a huge day-use area with lots of picnic tables near the water.

Guide to Oxbow

Cabin rentals near Oxbow, Oregon provide access to mountain scenery and riverside settings. Most locations maintain seasonal availability, with winter closures affecting many facilities above 5,000 feet elevation. Road conditions can change rapidly in mountainous areas, particularly on forest service routes leading to remote cabin sites.

What to do

Hike from your cabin: At Blackhorse Campground, riverside cabins serve as perfect basecamps for exploring Hells Canyon. "Gorgeous sites most with river access... River sound drowns out noises from the road or other campers. Hells canyon overlook very close!" notes Kaitlyn P.

Fishing access: Cabin stays at Fish Lake Campground provide direct lake access for anglers. "Outstanding action packed trout fishing. Far away from anything... Best water I have ever tasted. This place is awesome," shares Patrick S. The lake sits at 6,990 feet elevation with primitive cabin accommodations.

Winter recreation: Seasonal cabin rentals cater to cold-weather activities. "Warm place when snowmobiling," reports Lance C. about Buck Park Cabin. "In the winter, the park offers great snowshoe trails, and groomed trails for cross-country skiing and skate skiing," Hannah C. mentions about Peninsula Campground.

What campers like

Natural springs: Several cabin areas feature mountain springs. "Natural spring is plumbed in to the campground. Best water I have ever tasted," notes a Fish Lake Campground visitor. These springs typically operate seasonally from June through October.

Wildlife viewing: Dawn and dusk wildlife activity enhances cabin stays at Wallowa Lake State Park Campground. "This is bear country so if thats not your thing, i wouldnt camp there. Lots of wild life," advises Finna G. The park maintains wildlife information stations at the main office.

Quiet seasons: Off-peak cabin rentals offer solitude. "We arrived in late November, when it was cold, snowy, and practically empty. But the campground and all of its facilities were open, and the camp host was extremely friendly and helpful!" reports Matthew K. about Wallowa Lake cabins.

What you should know

Remote access challenges: Many cabin sites require preparation. "In the summer, the long rough road into it is not for everyone... Bring your own water," warns Jim B. about Two Color Guard Station, located "near the end of 18 miles of unpaved mountain road."

Weather variability: Mountain cabin locations experience extreme conditions. "It was the windiest night I've ever experienced camping," reports Caitlyn R. about Farewell Bend. At Fish Lake Campground, conditions reflect the 6,990ft elevation with "pine forested high elevation" terrain described by Jim F.

Reservation requirements: Cabin availability varies drastically by season. "This is a busy location. Sites fill up fast," advises Stephanie Z. regarding Wallowa Lake. For Peninsula Campground, Tom K. notes: "This may have been one of the best State Park spots we had on our western trip!!"

Tips for camping with families

Riverside options: Cabin rentals with water access please kids. "Beautiful sites most with river access. Some are kinda close together," reports Kaitlyn P. about Blackhorse Campground. Sites typically include outdoor space for family activities.

Activity variety: Select cabins near multiple recreation options. "There is plenty to do here including hiking, biking and enjoying the lake," recommends Tom K. about Peninsula Campground, adding "This may have been one of the best State Park spots we had on our western trip!!"

Spacing considerations: Some cabins lack privacy. "The spots are a little close but we never were bothered by it. If we had dogs it may have been a little more of a nuisance," notes Tom K. about Peninsula Campground. For families preferring seclusion, Fish Lake Campground offers more dispersed options.

Tips from RVers

Seasonal access: Mountain cabin and RV sites have weather-dependent seasons. "Only the Brownlee loop was open in mid-March. There were plenty of sites to choose from with great views of the river," notes Kellie T. about Farewell Bend State Recreation Area.

Hookup availability: When choosing cabin camping near Oxbow, some locations offer RV services nearby. "We had reserved a spot in C loop with a view of the water but it was so windy when we got there the site was not very comfortable," reports Caitlyn R. about Farewell Bend, where cabin and RV options exist in separate loops.

Winter facilities: Cold-weather cabin stays require planning. "The water was of at sites, but the sites and bathrooms were good," notes Kellie T. about Farewell Bend in mid-March, highlighting the need to verify which facilities remain operational during shoulder seasons.
