Best Equestrian Camping near Michael J Kirwan Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

West Branch State Park Campground offers bridle trails for horseback riding throughout its 5,000-acre property near Michael J Kirwan Lake. The park maintains multiple horseback riding routes with approximately 20 miles of trails open to equestrians, along with separate hiking-only paths. While the campground doesn't feature dedicated horse corrals, the bridle trails accommodate day riders and camping horse owners. The campground provides spacious sites suitable for horse trailers with nearly 200 campsites across three loops, including full hookup options (50 amp), electric-only sites, and primitive camping areas. Sites and roads are paved with each spot including a fire ring and picnic table. Horseback riders particularly appreciate the park's extensive trail system that connects riders to various areas within the park.

Trail access points are strategically positioned throughout the park, making it convenient for equestrians to ride directly from the campground. The bridle trails share space with snowmobiles seasonally, so riders should be aware of potential mixed use during winter months. Horses can be tied at designated areas while owners camp, though visitors must bring their own containment systems as the park does not provide permanent equine facilities. The campground's location provides excellent access to the surrounding countryside with varied terrain suitable for riders of different experience levels. Water access points for horses are available along the trails, and the park's large lake offers scenic riding opportunities along shoreline paths. Riders should note that certain park areas permit hunting, so wearing bright colors during hunting seasons is advisable for trail safety.

    Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet little campground

Tucked away in southeastern Ohio is a gem of a park for camping, hiking and horse camping. Clean water, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball and basketball court. Dump station and 18 miles of multi use trails! Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek. But be sure to pack a picnic and relax and enjoy! Only a few electric sites available. Mostly flat shaded sites most perfect for tents or trailers.

    Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet and Beautiful

This smaller campground has a mix of equestrian sites and tent/RV sites. There are no showers, but the vault toilets were cleaned thoroughly ever morning. You need to be careful when booking, especially if you are trying to pitch a tent, as some sites are quite sloped. Our site was huge and right next to the water spigot.

    Equine Camping

I loved to camp in the Horse camping area but this year they are allowing tent campers to camp there and it is just not safe.  There are multiple tents, sometimes in between horse campers.  There are children running around and since this in the back of the campground with no supervision, the campers are leaving garbage at the sites and in the fire pits.

There are two camp hosts in that area and they do the best they can to educate people on horses but most do not understand they were even booked in the horse camp nor do they understand that horses can spook.

The hosts are trying to clean up after these bad campers and reporting them but there does not seem to be anything they can do. They would never allow this kind of thing to happen in the main campground.

If the campers are allowed to camp in the horse camp then the horse campers should be allowed in the main camp.  I sure would  like a full hook up with electricity and water for my horse trailer.

Whats fair is fair.  Why even designate a section just for Horse campers if you are going to allow primitive campers to camp there.

Last year there may have been one or two tents here and there through out the season but this year the tent campers outnumber the horse campers.

Awesome state park with many amenities

Ranger Review: Morsel Spork at West Branch State Park

    **Campground Review: **

This state park was very welcome after our first two unlucky Ohio state park experiences. We had no trouble pulling in at 3 pm on a Sunday after Labor Day with no reservations and snagging a very nice spot (Site 50 backs up to Kirwan Reservoir). There are two loops that are on Jay Lake where there is a beach; it was understandable that there weren’t any water view spots that had not been reserved here. A very quiet park that is well-maintained with lots of amenities. Even the rumbling of the nearby trains was on the quiet side! Nice playground with toy stocked sandpit, volleyball net, cheap laundry ($3 per load, wash and dry), dishwashing sinks, showers, and clean bathrooms. There was even a step stool for kids to be able to reach the sinks. A staffed store(9am-7pm on Sunday, 11am-7pm Monday– Thursday and 9 am– 8:30 pm on Saturday) with basic supplies and, of course, t-shirts and sweatshirts. Some of the sites have a slight grade so be cautious when selecting. Many trees that provide separation between sites. Several short hiking trails. A side note: I only saw one non-Ohio license plate besides ours in the entire park, almost like it is an Ohio secret (not anymore!)

    **Product Review: **

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I have the opportunity to test products. At this campground, I tested the large  Morsel Spork from Outdoor Element. I have to admit that when I unpacked my box from Outdoor Elements, I was surprised at how LONG our morsel sporks were(we have other sporks that are much shorter so I was expecting these to be a similar size) but then I saw a photo of someone using it with their freeze-dried meal and it was an aha moment! No need to dirty another dish because this mighty spork can reach to the bottom of the pouch with no problem! These sporks are also sturdier than others we have used. The rubber scraper edge is a nice touch – would be great for getting the last delicious bits of meals from the freeze-dried meal pouches and I’m thinking also in glass or plastic containers. A very nice addition to our camping tools.

    Great Find!

Here's what's great about this campground situated at an easy drive from major cities like Columbus and Cleveland...its scenic, a fully loaded campground with bathhouses, parks, hiking paths, swimming resivoir with boat rental...we highly recommend renting a pontoon for the day and hanging out in the resivoir for swimming and lounging! It's both relaxing and nice to get away from the beach crowd!

Guide to Michael J Kirwan Lake

West Branch State Park near Michael J Kirwan Lake spans over 5,000 acres of northeastern Ohio woodland. The campground sits at approximately 950 feet elevation in a moderately hilly region characterized by mixed hardwood forests and open meadows. Winter camping options remain available with temperatures typically ranging from 20-40°F during colder months, while summer temperatures average 75-85°F with moderate humidity.

What to do

Kayaking and fishing access: West Branch State Park Campground provides direct water access for campers with waterfront sites. "We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite. The shower house and bathrooms are large and clean. There is even a book exchange shelf at the shower house in case of rainy days," notes Alisa G. at West Branch State Park Campground.

Beach swimming: The park maintains swimming areas accessible from the campground. "Swimming area is alright, a little muddy in areas, but the beach is kept clean. There are little hideaway trails everywhere, making for a fun adventure!" reports Jill T. about the recreation options available at the campground.

Pioneer village exploration: At Beaver Creek State Park Campground, history buffs can explore preserved historical structures. "The best part about the area was the history that surrounds it. There is a pioneer village near the park office that offers some picnicking areas around it. It also has original buildings from the pioneer days (church, school, etc)," shares Shay D.

What campers like

Lakefront camping spots: Many campers appreciate the direct water access at sites near Michael J Kirwan Lake. "We're at site 160. No electricity, no hook ups, but a HUGE lakefront site. We're in a self contained RV so it's not a problem for us. Beach is right next door too!" explains Rino S. from West Branch State Park.

Pine tree camping areas: For those seeking shade and natural settings, some horse campgrounds near Michael J Kirwan Lake offer pine-shaded sites. "When you pull into Beaver Creek Family Campground you pretty much have two choices: either you go left into multiple Pine tree sites or right into two cabins and more RV friendly open sites... I suggest the pine sites for any tent or hammock campers," recommends Aaron B.

Spacious, private sites: Mosquito Lake State Park Campground receives praise for its roomy campsites. "The sites are huge. The dog park is amazing. Theres so much to do here. Swimming, boating, fishing. We love it," shares Courtney C., though she notes some limitations for tent campers.

What you should know

Water availability varies: Some campgrounds have limited water access points. At Jefferson Lake State Park Campground, "All water full up towers only have those spigots that are not threaded. Had to hold hose over spigot about 20 min to fill 35 gal. We were later told by staff the maintenance building had a threaded spigot," reports Eddie.

Site levelness challenges: Many campsites throughout the region have uneven terrain. "Our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches," explains Andrea F. about her experience at West Branch.

Bathroom facilities vary: Facilities range from full shower houses to primitive options. "Only bad are no real bathrooms except at the front of the park. No place to wash dishes. Rough if you're tent camping. But we love the sites so much that we keep coming back," notes a camper at Mosquito Lake State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Look for sites near play areas when camping with children. "The park office loans games and sports equipment to campers. There is a newer dog park near the intersection of Rock Spring and Esworthy roads. There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch," explains a family camper.

Family-friendly activities: Canton / East Sparta KOA Holiday offers unique experiences for children. "Took the family there and loved it. It's clean and quiet. Took the kids on the horse ride and they loved it. All staff were very friendly," shares Bradley B.

Nature exploration opportunities: Several horse campgrounds near Michael J Kirwan Lake feature educational nature areas. "The park maintains multiple playgrounds for the children. An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend," mentions a camper about recreational options at West Branch.

Tips from RVers

Check hookup locations: RV campers should verify the positioning of electrical connections. "Electric is a little far behind pad. We almost needed extension cord," notes Eddie about Jefferson Lake State Park Campground's equestrian camping area, which includes sites suitable for RVs with horses.

Consider site grading: RVers recommend checking site descriptions for levelness information. "Make sure to bring stuff to level. Bathrooms were clean separate showers verizon works well here," advises Joe I. about West Branch State Park.

Winter camping considerations: For off-season camping, select campgrounds with year-round facilities. "Perfect for our little Scamp trailer. Only 5 big electric sites, no showers or potable water. As a result it was so peaceful! We loved our rainy stay," shares Teri A. about Jefferson Lake's quieter atmosphere.
