What to do
Kayaking on Whitewater Lake: Whitewater Memorial State Park Campground provides excellent water access for paddlers. "Whitewater Memorial State Park is located close to Liberty Indiana and is our favorite between the two major parks on Brookville Lake. It has water access to both Brookville and Whitewater lakes," notes Brandie B.
Mountain biking near Dayton: The Twin Valley Trail at Dayton Metro Parks (Five Rivers Metroparks) offers challenging terrain about 40 miles north of Mason. "This was a lovely backpacking trail that is both challenging while not being too hard for new backpackers," shares Kenpocentaur K. The trail system covers approximately 2,000 acres with over 25 miles of connected paths.
Fishing at local lakes: Multiple parks near Mason offer fishing opportunities. "Great crappie fishing in early May just steep cliffs to get down to the water. There is a marina nearby where you can rent a John boat for pretty cheap too," mentions Renée C. about Cowan Lake State Park.
What campers like
Private, secluded sites: Some campgrounds offer more privacy than others. At Dayton Metro Parks, "This meant with two little ones we wouldn't have to constantly remind them to socially distance or put on masks. We were alone but had plenty of park supports," writes Kenpocentaur K.
Clean, modern facilities: East Fork State Park Campground maintains well-kept restrooms and showers. "Camp sites are all blacktop, level, and clean. Nice bath houses, and playgrounds," reports Jarrod M. The park includes over 400 sites with electric hookups.
Proximity to Cincinnati: Several parks provide camping options close to urban areas. "Our favorite campsite for the outskirts of Cincinnati. Lots of great spots available! You can get to the lake in about a 15 minute drive," says Elana C. about East Fork State Park.
What you should know
Campsite layouts vary dramatically: At A.J. Jolly Park & Campground, located about 30 miles south of Mason, site design can be challenging. "Pad are about 12 x12 concrete so that's a plus but the location of the pads if you want to use your RV awning means your wheels in what ever your using are going to be nearly off the level area or in the grass," explains Jeffrey D.
Weather affects trail conditions: Seasonal changes impact accessibility. "The park is well-maintained and organized specifically for the needs of horse campers," though "trail conditions may vary seasonally, particularly after heavy rainfall when some sections can become muddy."
Reservation requirements: Most equestrian campsites near Mason require advance booking. "We registered/paid online but the entire weekend there were no staff to be found," reports Kelli B., highlighting the self-service nature of some parks.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Cowan Lake State Park Campground offers dedicated play areas. "Nice cul-de-sac areas for groups with areas for kids to play. Ground is pretty level so bringing a bike for kids to ride on is nice. There is a playground in walking distance too," shares Renée C.
Kid-friendly water activities: Several parks offer swimming areas suitable for children. "Lots to do for families. Nice size lots. A variety of water stations," writes Abby N. about Cowan Lake State Park.
Educational opportunities: Look for parks with nature programs. "I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail," notes Kenpocentaur K.
Tips from RVers
Site selection at Winton Woods: Winton Woods Campground offers various site types for different RV needs. "There is a myriad of sites here from 50-amp full hook-up with paved pads and patios to 30-amp gravel sites. Sites have fire pits, picnic tables," explains Nancy W. "The campground is set in Winton Woods County Park which is about 20 minutes from downtown Cincinnati."
Leveling challenges: Many campgrounds require leveling equipment. "All camper pads are paved and most appeared level or just very slightly sloped," writes Lee D. about East Fork State Park, adding that "Not all loops have their own bath house and the I loop where we stayed was one of them."
Hookup locations: Check the position of utilities before selecting a site. "Water hook ups are on the opposite side of electrical on several sites," warns Jeffrey about A.J. Jolly Park, which can require extra hoses or cords.
