    Beachtrips made affordable

Great location close to Wilmington and Carolina Beach. The recent addition of air-conditioned cabins are a welcome alternative during the hot summer months even though they book up quickly. We enjoyed fishing and exploring the campground.

    Wilmington KOA

An Oasis slid behind a busy part of town

A campground that you quickly feel at home.  Level spacious sites, most with a good shade tree, allows for a quick set up.  To find the campground you have to pay attention and this is both a blessing and a challenge.  The campground is convenient to downtown Wilmington and a short drive to Wrightsville Beach.  Plenty of shopping and other entertainment nearby if the weather doesn't cooperate. The park is clean the showers are hot and the pressure is good.

    Carolina Beach State Park Campground

    Great spot!

I’ve been staying here every summer since i was a kid. So probably 11 summers now. It’s a great place. Clean bathrooms and cute well air conditioned cabins. You can ride your bike or walk to the boardwalk with some of the way having a paved bike trails. Gates close i think at 10 and open in the morning so remember to bring bikes. During the summer it is very humid and hot with lots of mosquitoes so remember to bring your bug spray. Try britt’s doughnuts of wake and bake before you leave, i promise you won’t regret it.

    Carolina Beach State Park Campground

Beautiful coastal forest on the banks of the Cape Fear River

The group campground is isolated from the rest of the camping areas and is quiet at night. There are a lot of park visitors who walk through the area, but the trail through goes around he main campsites. The pit toilets are in need of some attention, but have always been well stocked. It’s about 400 yards to hike in, so we used a wagon to bring in gear. No water on site, but a really nice fire pit with grill top and 2 picnic tables. Shady tent sites available, but really hot and buggy in summer. Group camp site is about .5 mile hike from the river which is great for wading, but swimming is not allowed.

Many species of carnivorous plants grow here and abundant wildlife.

in the summer months there is a place to rent kayaks and paddle boards at the marina.

    Wilmington KOA

campground Close to the Beach and other Historic Places

I hesitate to give it five stars because of my particular campsite. It was difficult to get into because of the trees, especially since I had a full sized truck. I had to back up, pull forward, back up, pull forward, etc., the first time I pulled in. I love trees, but taking one out would be a lot better for the campsite where I was.

With that said, the campsite did have many good things going for it. It had a sheltered picnic table with a light, a charging station, and power outlets. However, if you are planning to run a cord between the power outlet and your tent on the tent pad, you need something long than twenty-five feet. I didn’t realize how far away the power was going to be, so I had to go to a store in town to get another extension cord. The site is sandy and level. The tent pad was also sandy and fairly level. If you are going to set up a tent on the tent pad, I suggest making sure it is not too big of a tent. My 8’ x 7’ tent fit, but larger tents may have a problem if there are tie-outs.

Another problem with my tent site is that it was so close to the bath house, which may not seem to be a problem to most. However, the lights on the bath house are on all night, and they light up the area as if it were a ball field. The bath house itself is really nice—one of the cleanest and well-kept bath houses I have used in my camping experiences. They are individual toilet/shower combos and can only be accessed via a code. However, the water pressure in the shower is so weak it would barely wet a frog’s back(slight exaggeration, but it was still VERY disappointingly weak). The bath house is handicap accessible and has a ramp.

Another problem I experienced was the noise. If it wasn’t the barking dog, it was what sounded like a garbage truck at 4:00 in the morning. There was also road noise from Market Street.

The reason most people come here is because of its proximity to Wrightsville Beach and other attractions, but there are things to do at the campground. There is a swimming pool, a playground, a beach volleyball court, and more. It also provides information about tours, and I believe it also has kayak rentals.

Overall, I would recommend this campground, but I believe it is better suited for RV campers rather than tent campers.

    Lake Waccamaw State Park Campground

Great campground but avoid the yurt!

I have camped with a large group of friends at site #2 a couple of times, but this weekend, I wanted to camp with just my two boys, and site #5 (the yurt site) was available.  This site was new since I had camped here last.  It said it slept 6 and the website showed a pic of two beds; I *assumed* there would be four more, since it slept 6.

Long story short, just 2 beds.  But the worst part was weeds growing up through the floorboards, ripped screens, doors that wouldn't zip completely, and two (purposeful) holes at the top that surely let in mosquitoes!  The boy who slept at ground level is completely bitten up, despite me spraying everyone with bug spray and using my tennis racket-style bug zapper to clear out the yurt before bed.

Our trash can was completely full (I mean, at least there's a trash can, but we could hardly use it). Our fire ring was full of ashes and the grate was jammed down.  The previous campers had left us a few jugs of water but also small pieces of trash scattered about.  What I'm trying to say was that this site was not maintained between the last visitors and us.

The campground, though, is awesome if you like roughing it.  You are allowed, thankfully, to drive to your site, but it's a hike to walk to the running water toilets, and I saw lots of people drive to them.  There is a closer pit toilet but I didn't check that out.

The lake is beautiful, shallow, warm, good fishing, fun for everyone!  Bullfrogs, peepers, and owls called all night.  Dragonflies galore flew about.  It's rustic, but relaxing.  And the visitor's center has a nice exhibit on the Carolina Bays.

    Carolina Beach State Park Campground

    Favorite Campground Near the Beach

I have camped at Carolina Beach State Park 1-2 times a year for the past five years. The campsites at this park are some of the cleanest sites I have camped at. We never see any trash on the ground or out on the trails. The bath house is always clean and stocked even in the winter. The bathhouse is also heated during the winter months and there are quit a few outlets available which we used to charge our phones. There lots of short trails to hike on where you can enjoy bird watching and viewing the Venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants native to the area. There is also a marina which offers a public boat ramp. The marina also offers kayaks and SUP tours and rentals ranging from 2hrs to a full-day. This Campground is also located next to a food lion. It is also only 5 minutes from the beach and Freeman Park where you can drive directly onto the beach if you have 4WD. This campground is packed on holiday weekends. There were only 2 campsites available when we visited for memorial day weekend.

    Holden Beach RV Campground

    Great Stay!

We loved our time at Holden Beach RV Park! The staff is so friendly, and the campground is beautifully maintained. It’s in a perfect location too.

Upon check in we were escorted to our site, and they even helped us back in. The bathrooms and laundry were clean and kept up well during our stay. There’s a small playground and a pretty big dog park. We were there during Thanksgiving, so they had a potluck meal for all of the guests in the park. We really enjoyed that!

The gift shop is super cute, and they have the biggest DVD library for free rentals!

The only negative was that our site seemed to be one of the few that directly faced another site even though it did not show that on the park map. We ended up being super close to the other campers (so much so that we were basically all around the same fire pit) which was a little uncomfortable since they were strangers.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back! We will just make sure to pick a different site number next time.

Guide to Wrightsville Beach

Carolina Beach State Park Campground provides upscale glamping accommodations near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Located approximately 15 minutes from the shore, this park offers yurt options within its grounds. The campground sits between the Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean beaches, creating a unique ecological setting where visitors can explore carnivorous plant habitats. During winter months, the park sees fewer visitors, making it an ideal time for a more secluded glamping experience.

What to do

Beach driving access: At Carolina Beach State Park Campground, visitors can drive 4WD vehicles directly onto the beach. "You can drive onto the beach - it makes it SO easy!!!" notes Kimberly S. This feature significantly simplifies hauling gear for day-long beach outings.

Off-season exploration: Winter camping offers a quieter experience with more privacy. "I've been here at different times of the year. I really enjoy camping here in December and January. Less people and the park is so nice," shares Ms P. The mild coastal winter climate makes year-round camping viable.

Hiking the carnivorous plant trails: The park features several hiking paths through a unique ecosystem. "Within the park, there are tons of hiking trails through a really beautiful area. I hear the fishing is also really good within the park," explains Sam M., who also notes the park's proximity to swimming beaches just 5 minutes away.

What campers like

Family-friendly amenities: Wilmington KOA offers facilities specifically designed for families. "The pool was big and warm, easy for swimming while maintaining social distancing. One of our favorite parts was that you could walk a short path to a delightful coffee shop with great food and drinks and nice outdoor seating. Our girls also enjoyed the smooth roads for skateboarding," notes The School for Y.

Quieter beach access: Many campers appreciate less crowded beaches nearby. "I like it because it's not really touristy like the outer banks or myrtle beach. Not a whole lot of people come to it, so it's always pretty secluded and clean," remarks Sam M. about the beaches near Carolina Beach State Park Campground.

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness ranks high on campers' priority lists. "The campsites at this park are some of the cleanest sites I have camped at. We never see any trash on the ground or out on the trails. The bath house is always clean and stocked even in the winter," Caroline G. shares about her experiences at Carolina Beach State Park.

What you should know

Marina and water sports access: Lake Waccamaw State Park Campground provides water recreation options beyond the ocean. "The lake is beautifully kept and clean. Very shallow. You can walk out a good 300 meters. We kayaked and fished while we were here," notes Sara H. The shallow water makes it especially suitable for families with young children.

Primitive camping considerations: Some glamping sites require preparation for longer walks. "The only warning I'd give is you are permitted to drive to your campsite to set up, but sites 2-5 are a quarter mile plus from the parking area... especially sites 4 and 5 (we were in 4) are very far from the bathroom. Don't forget anything in the car," advises Kristin T.

Trolley transportation options: Some campgrounds provide transportation to beaches. At Holden Beach RV Campground, "a free trolly takes you to the beach and some restaurants," according to Taissa K., eliminating parking concerns during peak season.

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Holden Beach RV Campground offers family-friendly amenities. "There is a playground for kids and I could see our kids riding their bikes around with no issues at all. It is very short ride to the beach and there is a grocery store, ice cream shop, and a few restaurants nearby," notes Caleb S.

Off-peak beach camping: Visiting outside summer months provides a different experience. "The bathhouse is also heated during the winter months and there are quit a few outlets available which we used to charge our phones," Caroline G. explains about Carolina Beach State Park during off-season stays.

Insect protection: Prepare for coastal insects, especially in warmer months. "Bring mosquito netting or pop up to keep the horse flies away!" recommends Sara H. about Lake Waccamaw State Park Campground, where insects can be prevalent near still water.

Tips from RVers

Urban convenience with nature access: S & W RV Park balances seclusion with accessibility. "Quiet site, not a lot on amenities, but nice wooded areas, friendly staff, and 20 minutes to Holden beach, 20 minutes to Southport. Really great location," reports Lauren D., highlighting the strategic location for exploring multiple coastal areas.

Full hookup availability: Many glamping options near Wrightsville Beach include complete RV services. "We were able to get up our large tent on the platform and have enough space for our chairs. The lake is beautifully kept and clean," shares Sara H. about Lake Waccamaw State Park Campground's platform accommodations.

Wi-Fi reliability for remote work: Some campgrounds offer reliable connectivity. At Wilmington KOA, "My wife worked from the road while I taught school. The WiFi was strong and the employees were helpful and informative," explains Luke M., making it suitable for digital nomads needing to stay connected.
