Frontier Town Campground in North Hudson represents one of the specialized equestrian camping options approximately 40 miles south of Au Sable Forks, New York. The Adirondack region features diverse terrain with elevations ranging from 1,000 to over 4,000 feet, creating varied camping conditions across seasons. Horse-friendly camping facilities in this region typically operate from late spring through early fall, with some sites closing after Columbus Day weekend.
What to do
Trail riding access: Frontier Town Campground provides strategic access to multiple trail networks throughout the Adirondacks. Campers note the well-maintained trails connecting to the property: "This is an old-growth forest area to a site on the west side of the road gives best Morning sun - sites 57 and 59 are good examples," reports Charles K. at Frontier Town Campground.
Swimming and water activities: Branbury State Park Campground offers lake access with equipment rentals. "Across the street from the campground was access to the lake with plenty of grassy areas to hang out. And beautiful sunsets at night! A five minute hike- though it is quite a rocky, boulder-y hike- from the sites leads to a small river and swimming hole," writes Nicole E. at Branbury State Park.
Nearby attractions: AuSable Chasm Campground positions visitors near signature Adirondack landmarks. "They are across the road from the Chasm to hike, Tube down the river, raft, rock climb, adventure course. This camp ground is a short drive to Lake Placid, Plattsburgh, Vermont State and so much more," notes Susan S. at AuSable Chasm Campground.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Sites at Frontier Town accommodate large rigs with ample space. "I was in site 43, it was long enough it could have fit two of the biggest RVs I have ever seen. My 75 foot starling cable did not even reach all the way back out to the road," reports Butch K. at Frontier Town.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds near Au Sable Forks maintain excellent bathroom facilities. "The bathrooms are the cleanest I've seen so far and we do this full time. The only disappointment was that the hot water doesn't get very hot in the shower so you better do some jumping jacks to get pumped before showering during colder temps," shares Chelsea B. about Frontier Town.
Connectivity options: Remote workers camping near Au Sable Forks can find connectivity at select sites. "It's really open with little tree cover which is perfect for those who work remote using Starlink. We had fantastic connection," notes Chelsea B. about the equestrian camping area at Frontier Town.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: June visits to equestrian campgrounds may present insect challenges. "I saw the bugs, some of them clearly mosquitoes and I never saw one get away with biting me. But I ended up with two lower legs and two forearms that constantly itch like mad. I will never go back in June," warns Butch K. about Frontier Town.
Site layout variations: Campgrounds near Au Sable Forks feature different layouts requiring preparation. "Upon arrival at Ausable Chasm, we were told we had to take a site with water and electric since we had a camper van. These sites were $13 more per night and we really did not need the hookups. We were finally able to convince the staff that we could take a standard tent site, which was more than big enough," explains Lee D. at AuSable Chasm Campground.
Supply preparation: Limited shopping options exist near some campgrounds. "Get your supplies before you arrive! Not many places around to quickly grab charcoal if you need it," advises Chelsea B. about camping at Frontier Town.
Tips for camping with families
Playground facilities: Some campgrounds offer play areas for children. At Branbury State Park, visitors enjoy "a large playground. Volleyball and horseshoe pits. Definitely will be returning! Also, bathrooms were always clean and well maintained. Park staff very friendly," according to J L. at Branbury State Park.
Biking opportunities: Many campgrounds feature biking trails suitable for various skill levels. "I wish I had my bike!!! I didn't know that this was a biking campground and there were SO MANY trails. Made the most of them with running, but overall, a fantastic campground," writes Rebecca Y. about AuSable Chasm Campground.
Educational activities: Nature centers provide learning experiences for children. At Branbury State Park, "Theres a nature center with all kinds of information and activities," notes J L.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategies: When booking equestrian camping near Au Sable Forks, consider sun exposure. Charles K. suggests Frontier Town sites 57 and 59 for best morning sun exposure in the old-growth forest area.
Shower facilities: Individual shower rooms vary across campgrounds. At AuSable Chasm, "Bathrooms and shower rooms are individual rooms, but the doors are not labeled so it's a game of 'what's behind door number 1?' There was no light in the shower room that I looked at so a night shower would be out of the question," reports Lee D.
Road conditions: Internal campground roads may present challenges. "The road through the campground is dirt and rutted but the speed limit is 5 mph, so it wasn't that bad, but it would be a mess if it was raining," notes Lee D. about AuSable Chasm Campground.
