The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone

Great One Night Stop - Would Have Stayed Longer!

We scheduled a pull through for 1 night last minute due to an unexpected change in plans. We are a full-time traveling family (2 kids - 8 & 13) and 2 English Bulldogs. We have a Class A motorhome and flat tow a Jeep. The campground was beautiful and easy to get in and out of. The sites were level and great size with nice spacing in between. The location was nice too! We did head over to the casino briefly and enjoyed that. We also took a drive to the University of Syracuse to tour the campus. Clean and wonderful park. Would definitely recommend.

    Butternut Hill RV Campground

Choose Butternut Hill for special local events!

This is a small campground set up on the periphery of Butternut Hill farm which is located on the main Route 20 in Bouckville NY.  At the time I submitted my review, I was not able to make edits on the basic campground listing;   I am not sure why the Dyrt platform wouldnt let me update the important details, but you can get more info and make reservations on the campground webpage which is here:

    https://butternuthill.net/

The campground is in a convenient location in Bouckville,  a small upstate NY village with a concentration of numerous antique shops, which is a draw for collectors in the area. There is also a famous Inn and restaurant, the Landmark Inn, which anchors the town, adjacent to a trailhead for a hiking trail along the historic Chenango Canal, an offshoot of the Erie Canal.

The meadows and fields of Butternut Hill are the superb festival setting for several regional events, including several Antique shows, the Central New York Fiber Festival, a craft fair and a car show, events that are scheduled a few times a month throughout the summer.

The campground is adjacent to the festival fields, lining a forest edge with expansive views of the surrounding valley. During special events, vendors and exhibitors have a convenient and inexpensive place to stay that is not far from the exhibit tents and festival fields, but people attending the events can stay there too, or campsites may be reserved at other times through the summer, on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis.

Many of the sites are for RV's, which have electric and water hookups along with a picnic table and fire pit; rates fro these rang $40-50. There are also primitive tent sites which have a grassy tent area and fire pit but no picnic table and cost  $30 per night. There is a cozy log camper cabin available, at a very inexpensive price of $60 per night (bring your own linens). All camping spots are in close walking distance to the bath house, which has water, showers, and bathrooms. (Additional porta potties are set up during festival events.)

I was there during the Fiber Festival, and I was impressed at how well organized the programing was, and how clean everything was despite large attendance. In addition, it rained really hard one day of the event, and though the access roads got a little muddy, the campsites seem well drained and did not get muddy. The campsites all back to the woods on the west side, so this serves as a good windbreak too.

The campground office has some basic camping supplies available, but an advantage of being there during a festival event was a nice food tent and a variety of food trucks offering delicious fare!  If you were coming from a distance to attend one of the local special events, this is a good place to stay, though of course busy during the day. If you wanted to camp here at a non event time, you would find it to be a quiet pastoral location with access to some hiking and fishing spots in close proximity. For staying in the area, the camper cabin would be a great all-weather option if you can get it!

    Soft Maple Campground

Small and completely gorgeous! Beach, wooded sites, great for everyone.

Soft Maple is a truly gorgeous small campground. Only about a dozen sites or so, first come first serve. Level sites for RVs or tent or hammock camping. Each site has a nice space with fire ring and picnic table. The beach is lovely and clean. There’s boat access for canoes and kayaks as this is part of the Beaver River route.

The entire campground is accessible, with gravel pack paths, and level sites.

Charlie is the caretaker here and everyone says he is the nicest person you’ll meet.  You can’t beat site number 11 for the perfect mix of treelined and water view!

There is space for RVs and a dump station but the sites do not have power or hookups.

If you come in to the campground from “number 4 road” (aka state rt. 26) it’s exactly five miles from the Left turn on to Soft Maple rd. If you have time, stop halfway- the 2.5 mile mark will bring you to the entrance for Eagle falls, a short hike with a fantastic reveal.

We stayed at Cherry Grove in May ‘23 with a Fifth wheel camper. The park is very well maintained.  Sites are good sized and packed gravel.  WiFi is very good, as is cell service from Verizon and T-Mobile. It Most of the campground is seasonal, but all of the campers were friendly.

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Good experience - lovely swimming area and lakes!

We had a great stay at this park. We enjoyed biking and exploring the lovely blue-green lakes. The swimming area was awesome. We were on the edge of a the large RV section in Pinewoods with premium sites. However, they are all in the bright sun - no shade. It was great having the camp store so close!

    Kayuta Lake Campground and Marina

Right at the gateway to the Adirondacks, a real gem of a campground!

We've visited this campground 6 times since we found it 4 years ago, and keep coming back for more. Easy access, great staff, well kept facilities and a beautiful setting. What more can you ask for?

The sites themselves are a good size. They aren't huge, but you'll have enough room to get creative with your parking. Plenty of trees to hang your hammocks on. All sites have a picnic table and fire pit, and for the most part are fairly level. Not all sites have full hookups, some are just power, some are only grey water, and some are full. There are a lot of full timers here, so the grounds can look fuller than they really are as most often the majority of the full time sites are not occupied. But on big weekends, when everyone shows up, its still not too crowded.

The facilities are modern and well kept. The only issue I had was the shower heads are at about 5'2" above the floor. I'm 6' tall. So that kinda sucked. But the pressure and temp were great, so its still a win. Plus, camping isn't really about taking showers anyways, right? Other than that the bath houses are well maintained and stocked. And they are never more than a quick walk from your camper.

Did I mention there is a pool? There is. And its HEATED. Which is nice, as we often get up there early or late in the season, and a heated pool is a necessity. There's also a good sized playground, an arcade, and lots of games for kids (and adults) to play like basketball, shuffle board, corn hole or horse shoes.

They have a great little shop there too, with just about everything you'd need to make a great weekend. And the staff is fantastic as well. The river is a little weird to get to, but totally worth it for kayaking, sailing or whatever kind of boating you want to do.

So that's a lotta Pro's. I should list some Cons too, to keep it fair.

    • The sites are kinda close, so you don't get a ton of privacy, and you can really hear what's going on next door.
    • The roadways can get a little tight between the trees, and can make for some interesting backing in.
    • Also, the roadways are mostly one-way, which can make getting creative with your trailer landing position tough.
    • They offer free wifi.
    • Not all sites have full hookups
    • Personally I'm not a fan of such an abundance of full-time units. But at least they're well kept (for the most part) and it is a few degrees shy of looking like a trailer park. You know what I mean.

Check them out, and they'll become one of your favorites too!

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Green Lakes is a model state park

This is a great example of what a state park should be. It not only preserves a place of unique biological diversity and geologic interest, it is also well set up and well maintained to maximize low impact outdoor recreation and environmental education. A new state of the art regional environmental education center is being built now that will open in spring, as well as new handicapped access kayaking docks that complement Accessible trails and campsites throughout the park. This is a great destination for families, handicapped campers, and natural history enthusiasts. There are several campgrounds, one is large and open and meant for large RVs, others are drive-in forested tent sites or trailer sites with hookups, and several walkin sites. There is also a colony of rustic camper cabins. The campgrounds have brand new restroom facilities and playgrounds, and the main lake has a new beach house. The lake is a fascinating meromictic lake with clear calcium-rich waters that are not only pristine and beautiful to look at, but also great for swimming and snorkeling as the waters are crystal clear and very deep. There are hiking trails, paved bike trails, a nature preserve for bird watching at Round Lake, a golf course, and great kayaking or canoeing. It is also located right next door to the Erie Canal State Park for those who want to hike or bike the historic Erie Canal. Though you might expect a park like this to be in a remote location, it is actually just a short distance east of the suburbs of the Syracuse metro area, so it is an easy park to get to, plus staying there also provides easy access to stores for supplies, or access to local cultural activities or restaurants for those who want that. One of my favorite state parks in New York!

Guide to Altmar

RV campgrounds near Altmar, New York typically operate from late April through mid-October when salmon fishing attracts many visitors to the region. Located in Oswego County along the Salmon River, Altmar sits within the western foothills of the Tug Hill Plateau, with elevations around 400 feet above sea level. Winter snowfall averages over 200 inches annually in this lake effect snow belt, which explains the limited camping season.

What to do

Fishing adventures: Most campers at Brennan Beach Campground come for the excellent fishing opportunities. "We went late summer so it was becoming offseason. Most amenities close down. Pool, swimming at Lake Ontario beach, etc. One staff member Mike told us about Salmon River Falls. We went and it is a 'must see' while there," noted Robert M.

Golfing options: Streamside RV Park & Golf Course combines camping with a 12-hole course. "There is a 12 hole golf course that surrounds the campground," reports B M., adding that "There is a bar that serves food called Divots. They had prime rib on the menu yet Sundays they close early."

Hiking trails: Several parks near camping areas offer walking paths with forest and water views. A visitor to The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone mentioned, "For activities, there are some great hikes around the campground, as well as excellent playgrounds, fishing, an awesome pool, and of course, free shuttle rides to the Turning Stone Casino right up the street."

What campers like

Waterfront access: Lake Ontario shoreline camping provides direct water access. One visitor to Sun Outdoors Association Island explained, "Surrounded by Lake Ontario, it's a secluded and idyllic setting for a RV campground. Our site(#G07) was on the sunset-side of the island and the last of the row beside a walking trail."

Well-maintained facilities: Many RV parks near Altmar prioritize cleanliness and upkeep. A camper at Butternut Hill RV Campground shared: "Had a great stay, loved the good WiFi, showers, laundry, and bathrooms!"

Quiet atmosphere: Several campgrounds maintain peaceful environments despite being fully booked. A Treasure Isle RV Park camper wrote, "Treasure Isle is nice and quiet. The sites are a good size with water and electric on each site. There is a dumping station to use, some sewer sites."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most RV campgrounds near Altmar close by mid-October. "We went late summer so it was becoming offseason. Most amenities close down," noted a Brennan Beach camper.

Site types vary: Each campground offers different site configurations. At Ontario Shores RV Park, a visitor observed: "There are 7 overnight pull thru full hookup sites with concrete patio, Sites are level and spacious. Open field to walk the dog or for children."

Demographic differences: Some campgrounds attract specific age groups. According to Paula G. at Streamside RV Park & Golf Course: "This is a privately owned very nice campground! The owners take pride in their business and the grounds are meticulously kept. Everyone here is a golfer and there are no children."

Weather impacts: The Lake Ontario region experiences significant wind and insects. A Sun Outdoors Association Island visitor warned: "One HUGE downfall was the amount of BUGS! Millions (not exaggerating) of midges and mayflies swarming the grounds from Lake Ontario."

Tips for camping with families

Look for playground access: Some RV campgrounds offer dedicated children's areas. At Treasure Isle RV Park, a camper noted, "There is a nice bathhouse, playground, basketball court, Beach and walking trails."

Select campgrounds with family programming: Certain parks organize activities for younger guests. A visitor to The Villages RV Park mentioned, "Spacious FHU sites. Pull thru and back ins" and another added that there's "lots to do for kids, facilities are new and clean."

Consider tent camping options: Not all families require RV accommodations. Fort Drum Recreation Area offers alternatives as one visitor explained: "They offer regular camping sites and RV sites, they also have a dog park for the little furry ones."

Tips from RVers

Site selection matters: Location within campgrounds affects experience. An RVer at Sun Outdoors Association Island advised: "I definitely recommend the sunrise side. The sunset is of course beautiful but sunrise sites are much bigger and can lead right to the water which is much nicer. It's a lot less windy and easier to be in the water."

Hookup variations: Different campgrounds offer varying levels of electrical service. At Brennan Beach Campground, a camper reported: "Spent 3 nights with our 2 sons and my husband's 2 granddaughters, all under age 12. Bathrooms/showers were clean. Site we stayed at had full hook ups."

Back-in site considerations: Some parks have limited pull-through availability. A Streamside RV Park visitor explained: "All sites are a back in site yet it was long enough for us to stay hooked up. We had full hook up. The sites are tight like most RV parks."
