Danish Alps State Recreation Area Camping

      Perfectly Adequate

The overall rec area is lovely. During the regular season, roughly May to mid October, there is running water and showers at some spots with vault toilets available year round. Horse trails and camping is available at Danish Alps as are primitive and electric spots. The electric is all designed for RV's, vans, or trucks, but there is sufficient space at each site that you can have a tent. The electric area is up on a hill overlooking the lake and there is absolutely no mature tree cover in the area. Trees have been planted, but it will be a long while before they provide much shade. Like most of Nebraska most of the time it does get windy and being on the hill the electric camp gets to feel it for good and ill. The town of Hubbard is right next to the rec area, but because of the way things are laid out you do not get as many people casually driving around at night like you do at some other places. Being in the vicinity of Sioux City and Dakota City there is some glow on the horizon at night.

Verizon cell coverage was sufficient for streaming without buffering when camped there in September 2025.

Danish Alps State Recreation Area Camping

      All By Myself

I pulled in and found a wide open campground. I picked a site high on the bluff overlooking the reservoir. It had quite the view. It’s a newer area so trees are planted for the future. Sites are spacious with water and both 30 & 50 amp hookup. Clean dump station that also has a fish cleaning station. Playground, boat ramp, picnic area fishing, birdwatching, equestrian camp & trails, something for everyone.

      Union Grove State Park Campground

      Interesting campground

Two campgrounds within the park. Lower one is for horses. Upper is not. Sites in upper campground are a little small and close together but very well maintained. Hosts are very friendly. Bathrooms on include showers and we're extremely well maintained. Trails in the area give you a chance to stretch your legs. Convenient to the interstate, but that also means some highway noise if you are not in a hard sided camper.

Danish Alps State Recreation Area Camping

      Unexpectedly Pleasant

We didn't actually Camp there and truthfully I'm not so sure I ever even saw the campgrounds. But the lake in the area is beautiful and there's quite a large space to the park with lots of trails and open field areas. I believe you have to pay a fee to the DNR for a day pass or purchase an annual Nebraska park pass/license in order to even go through the park. There's a few places outside of town that advertise horseback riding and I always thought that would be a sweet place to do so. We mainly went to fish!

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

      Short weekend getaway

Nice campground. Very few tent only - mostly RVs/trailers. Washrooms basic but clean. Large site under trees with mix of sun & shade. Grassy area for tent. Access to water close by. Large playground for kids. Campground host had firewood. Picnic table & firepit with grill rack in good condition. Nearby boat ramp to load kayak onto Blue Lake. Many water lilies but sheltered at one end so good for kayak. Everyone seemed friendly though some folk stayed up pretty late on Friday!

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

      Nice, and clean lake

This place was pleasantly clean to me. Blue lake which is the lake this state park sits on. When you drive in from the road you see on your right the lake and to your left are houses. You go farther down and you see picnic accesses off the lake. And there is a swimming area and beach further down with a fully accessible restroom. There is also a keelboat on display and visitor center with a musuem. The center was closed when we were here, (thanks covid). Behind that is a dock and a little look out tower next to it. This is where we saw people kayak mainly. You go farther down and this was where the campsites were. This appeared to be more of a park set up for rv and campers than any tents. You go farther down pass this and you find more accesses to trails, and taller grass. This is a great park especially for a rv, and how clean it is.

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

Nice evening swim after a hot day

      Vibe: Relaxed summer lake fun.

      Cleanliness: Average

      Facilities: Slightly dated but adequate

General spots: Good size, good spacing, not private. Large cottonwood trees offer good shade on lake side spots.

Our site: 10. Close to the swimming area. Not far from bathrooms.

Noise: Friendly chatter. Mostly quiet. Some music from the summer camp across the lake(see below).

      Cell signal: Good (Verizon)

Other: The lake isn’t huge, but the water was not murky and you could wade out pretty far and still be shallow enough to stand. A summer camp is across the lake and they played some evening music and morning music starts at 7:30.

      Union Grove State Park Campground

      Very clean and quiet camping

The campsites are in a bunch of pine trees and so that cuts down a lot on the weather if there's an issue it's got nice breezes but it gets cold cold at night like down in the 50s. I'm camping in a tent with my cat and dog and my cat likes to roam free a little bit and there's only I think about 20 campsites here and they're both from tent sides to a full-on RVs. There's a nice shower and bathroom and close proximity there's four and inside each one is a modern toilet sink and shower and lockable. The only complaint that I have is that a lot of the campsite spots are at an angle not only to get down to it from the road but an angle for the tent and the pine needles cover the ground which make great starting for fires they burn so fast and so quick that you feel like you're in a tinder box a little bit which is kind of spooky if there's a spark that goes flying it could actually set the whole campfire on a blaze. There is a nice camping pit this is a steak Campground and so able to get campsites for $16 a night. The people that are on staff here are so sweet give you lots of good advice for what's close by there is it's right between Beresford and vermilion so that's like 10 miles each way but there's no ice here so you would have to drive to one of those facilities to get the ice and by the time you got back would probably be melted to be honest with you so that's the only drawback so I would suggest dry ice for sure. There's a children's playground here for kids it would be something I guess you know very fun to go and be explorers in the woods I don't think there's much chance of them getting too lost really. But all in all this is a really good place to stay I've been here six nights now and I've only got a couple more to go and then I'll be moving on.

They also have a history museum to accompany the boat."

    What Campers Like

Private bathroom facilities: Campground facilities receive positive reviews for cleanliness. At Union Grove State Park Campground, "Shower rooms/bathrooms are immaculate, and smell so nice." Another camper noted, "private restrooms/showers, nice playground for kids."

    What You Should Know

Reservation requirements: Nebraska state parks require either day use permits or annual park passes for entry. For horse campgrounds near Hubbard, making reservations in advance is recommended, especially during peak summer months.

    Tips for Camping with Families

Playground access: When camping with children, consider sites near play areas. At Southwood Conservation Area, one long-time visitor mentioned having "a million memories of this place," making it suitable for family traditions.

Swimming options: During summer months, cooling off is important for families. Lewis and Clark State Park offers swimming with one camper noting it's "Well kept & family friendly camping in Iowa! We were able to reserve an electric unit right off the lake and across the road from the large playground."

Wildlife safety awareness: Familiarize children with appropriate wildlife behavior. One Southwood visitor mentioned being "stalked by a mountain lion" which "chased people out of the campground," emphasizing the importance of wildlife awareness.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: RV campers should note the electrical capacity differences between campgrounds. At Woodbury County Park Southwood Conservation Area, one camper praised the "nice campground clean bathrooms" while noting basic electric hookups.

Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on your RV's requirements and season. One Lewis and Clark visitor recommended, "We were able to reserve an electric unit right off the lake," highlighting the benefit of waterfront access for RVs.

Dump station considerations: The fish cleaning station at Danish Alps is conveniently located near the dump station. At Union Grove, a camper noted that facilities include a "dump station" but warned that some locations have tighter spaces that might be challenging for larger rigs.
