Danish Alps State Recreation Area features horse camping near the reservoir, approximately 35 miles north of Norfolk. The campground includes an equestrian camp with trails designed specifically for horseback riding, plus water and electrical hookups with both 30 and 50 amp service. Each campsite is spacious with ample room for horse trailers. The park requires a Nebraska state park pass for entry. Fishing, birdwatching, and a playground are available for visitors not engaged in horseback riding activities. The campground sees limited usage, with visitors often reporting having large sections to themselves.

Trail riders can access equestrian trails directly from the Danish Alps camping area. The park offers panoramic views from bluffs overlooking the reservoir, making for scenic rides. The surrounding countryside provides rolling terrain for varied riding experiences. Seasonal algae blooms at nearby Willow Creek State Recreation Area can affect water activities during summer months but do not impact horse trails. Horse owners should note the campground is relatively new, with young trees offering limited shade. Campers should bring sufficient water for horses during hot weather periods. The equestrian facilities accommodate riders of various experience levels, with both novice-friendly and more challenging trail sections available. Trailer access is straightforward with wide turning areas and level parking.

Danish Alps State Recreation Area Camping

      Perfectly Adequate

The overall rec area is lovely. During the regular season, roughly May to mid October, there is running water and showers at some spots with vault toilets available year round. Horse trails and camping is available at Danish Alps as are primitive and electric spots. The electric is all designed for RV's, vans, or trucks, but there is sufficient space at each site that you can have a tent. The electric area is up on a hill overlooking the lake and there is absolutely no mature tree cover in the area. Trees have been planted, but it will be a long while before they provide much shade. Like most of Nebraska most of the time it does get windy and being on the hill the electric camp gets to feel it for good and ill. The town of Hubbard is right next to the rec area, but because of the way things are laid out you do not get as many people casually driving around at night like you do at some other places. Being in the vicinity of Sioux City and Dakota City there is some glow on the horizon at night.

Verizon cell coverage was sufficient for streaming without buffering when camped there in September 2025.

Danish Alps State Recreation Area Camping

      All By Myself

I pulled in and found a wide open campground. I picked a site high on the bluff overlooking the reservoir. It had quite the view. It’s a newer area so trees are planted for the future. Sites are spacious with water and both 30 & 50 amp hookup. Clean dump station that also has a fish cleaning station. Playground, boat ramp, picnic area fishing, birdwatching, equestrian camp & trails, something for everyone.

      Unexpectedly Pleasant

We didn't actually Camp there and truthfully I'm not so sure I ever even saw the campgrounds. But the lake in the area is beautiful and there's quite a large space to the park with lots of trails and open field areas. I believe you have to pay a fee to the DNR for a day pass or purchase an annual Nebraska park pass/license in order to even go through the park. There's a few places outside of town that advertise horseback riding and I always thought that would be a sweet place to do so. We mainly went to fish!

Willow Creek State Recreation Area Campground

      Pretty good campground

The campground was nice. There were showers and restrooms available for use. Access to the water without walking through rocks is pretty slim but we did find a couple spots that our dogs could get in. There is no dump station available at the park, you have to drive to town to dump your tanks at the courthouse.

      Howells Community Park

      Good overnight spot while traveling.

      Pros

      -Water/Electricity/Dump station

      -Public restroom

-Near a gas station and convenience mart

      -Free will donation for firewood

      -Flat camping spots

      -Park nearby

      -Fire Rings

      Cons

      - There are only around 6 spots

-You share your water connection with your neighbor

-RV slips are right at the park entrance so there is the risk of traffic non stop if the park is being used for an event

I came in a couple days before memorial weekend and all of the RV spots were reserved so I only did a short drive around grabbing some photos. It looks like a great spot to swing in overnight if there are any open spots.

Willow Creek State Recreation Area Campground

      Great little getaway

First time visitors to this campground and it was great. We stayed here on our visit up to Ashfall Fossil Beds(which is a must see for anyone with kids, and is only a 30 minute drive from campsite) Most RV campsites are within a minute or two walk to lake. Awesome bike trails take you all around the lake and even across a bridge and dam for great views from multiple angles. Lots of wooded area and picnic locations. Has a couple of playgrounds for the kids, the one our kids loved required a little bike trek from the campground to the north side of the lake. One minor note to add would be to use the restrooms in the shower facility. Other restrooms that were not in the shower facility didn't seem well maintained. Other than that we would definitely come back and stay at this campground.

      Kid friendly lakeside camp

We only stayed one night but Willow Creek was a great waypoint. It is somewhat hard to find by signage, so carefully pay attention to GPS. Kids and families biking and walking and it has very nice paved areas. The May birding around this end of lake was fantastic. Bath facilities were a walk away but very clean.

      Perfect Go To

We found this campground a few years back and have visited multiple times. The lake is huge and great for fishing. There are miles of trails that we enjoyed. If you're into archery like we are, they have a great archery area. Nights are quiet and there are plenty of local spots nearby for the day time like a vineyard and for a little longer drive you can see ash fall fossil beds. This place is just great!

Willow Creek State Recreation Area Campground

      This place sucked

Me, my husband and grandson went there couple weeks ago. We’re supposed to stay for three days. We brought our three dogs. The host just got pissed off at us and told us we had to leave because one of our dogs kept barking at three in the morning well who in the hell walked by a camper at 3 o’clock in the morning because that’s the only reason why he would bark is because somebody was right there. And I paid for three days and didn’t get my money back. Didn’t get anything which is a bunch of bullshit.
