    Cozy Cabin in the Cornfields

This was a wonderful spot to visit during our trip across the country. The pet friendly cabin was a cozy air conditioned break from the August heat. The location is great and feels tucked away every though it isn't far from the highway. The staff were very helpful. I would definitely recommend!

Pretty and right off the highway

First, the owners are SO nice and helpful. The campground is right off the exit so it is very convenient and easy to get to, they have full hook ups for a very reasonable price so it was a great choice for a stop on our cross country trip. The amenities are nice- they have a pool, large playground, mini put and standard camp store. Things look a bit old but well maintained. Each spot had a porch swing, picnic table and fire ring which we very much enjoyed. The laundry room was closed due to Covid, but they do have one which is helpful too :) my kids particularly enjoyed the mini put and pool.

    Trade Winds

Fun, lively campground but too close together

3 miles East of Loup City is Trade Winds campground. It is privately owned so you don’t need a state pass. It has 12 cabins and 20 Rv/tent sites with electricity and shared water. The sites are very close together but have shade trees. Each site is back in with picnic bench and fire rings. There is a nice marina for food, bait, supplies. And it has a grill open on weekends. There is a coin operated shower house and laundry mat area. The Marina also has kayak, boat slip, and storage for rent. Everyone there seems to be nice. They even had a huge firework display.

    Diamond in the rough…

Older park with new owners. Convenient to hwy 80, Waco Nebraska. That means some hwy noise but it’s Nebraska, it’s flat! No jake brake noise. Besides we now wear ear plugs to bed so not an issue (try it, you’ll like it.) This place has all kinds of activities for kids young and old(er). Arcade, pool ( being repaired at time of review, it’s too cool now to think of swimming), corn hole toss game, miniature golf or just rocking on one of the many swinging chairs. Our site was ample, gravel pad and grass, fire ring, table and swing. Everything worked ( other than pool) even Wi-Fi, it worked well! That’s enough to bring me back. A few more of the new owners upgrades and repairs and this place could be a five star.

    Grand Island KOA

    Favorite KOA

This campground is set among the corn fields. The staff was super! The pool is cool and tucked away in the back. The store sold single local beers and was open late. They were slinging hot pizza. We stayed in an air conditioned camping cabin. Super close to the pool and bathrooms! 2 of the nicest fenced dog parks of any KOA. I would definitely stay there again if driving through.

    Double Nickel Campground

Well Run Campground with Exceptional Service

We’d passed through this area a few years ago when traveling I-80 and noticed there was a campground(CG) and golf course here in Waco, NE. We added this CG to our list and finally got a chance to stay here. The CG is a little ways off I-80 and easy to get to. Check-in was quick and easy and we were led to pull through site 303 with FHUs. There are separate prices for weekdays and weekends. The utilities were at the center of the long gravel pad. Water pressure was okay at around 40 psi. We got 2 bars on Verizon. The sites here are decently spaced especially for a private CG. The CG was clean and well-maintained. If there were long-term residents, you could not tell. We were here over a weekend, so there were families and a lot of kids using the swimming pool, mini golf, and the large playground area. Each site, along with a picnic table and fire pit has a bench swing. There’s a decent-sized dog park on the south side and larger one on the north side. The CG has its own tornado siren plus an underground tornado shelter. There’s one cabin for rent. They also have a well-kept laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers. York has your main amenities such as Walmart. The golf course right next door is a deceptively tough 9-hole course.

    Double Nickel Campground

Ranger Review of Midland ER210 Emergency Weather Radio &XTalker T31 Bundle

    Campground Review

We pulled into The Double Nickel Campground off of I-80 at the Waco exit(360) in Nebraska and were pleasantly surprised. We had a pull-thru site with Electric and Water. The site was a level, gravel pad with a picnic table and a large fire ring and a cute wooden double swing.

We learned that the owners Jeff and Amanda had bought the campgrounds in 2014 and moved here from Georgia. They have been working hard to improve it and are going to be making all RV sites into full hookups this winter. They also had started decorating for a haunted Halloween at the campgrounds.

This campground had free putt putt golf, video games, volleyball, yard games, playgrounds, a swimming pool, kids toys and books, crafts, and even an outdoor movie. Lots to do for family fun. There was also a golf course right next to the campgrounds.

The campgrounds offered tent and RV camping with Electric and Water to full hookups. There was free Wifi. The owner brought our firewood to the site and there was trash pick up at the site. There was a fenced in dog run for the pups. The only con was the interstate noise which we got use to. Everyone was very friendly and we made new camper friends and enjoyed fellowship around the campfire swapping stories and listening to the coyotes chattering in the distance. We will definitely return.

    Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time. At this campsite my husband and I tested the Midland ER 210 Emergency Weather Radio and XTalker T31 Walkie Talkie Bundle. Some of great features and things I liked about the Emergency Weather Radio are

    1. The ultrasonic dog whistle and flashing beacon to help aid search and rescue locate you in case you are lost or hurt.
    2. Loved all the different ways to charge this Radio. You can use the solar panel, the crank, the rechargeable batteries, or 6 AA batteries, making it a great tool to have.
    3. When we were listening to the radio, a siren went off to alert us that we were in a severe thunderstorm watch and that high winds were expected.

The XTalker T31 Walkie Talkies have

    1. Split chargers making them easy to charge
    2. A call or page button to call each other
    3. Ease of use

September is Emergency Prepareness Month and this bundle will definitely be a great asset to have especially here in Nebraska where the weather can turn bad quickly. Please check them out at https://midlandusa.com

    Prairie Oasis Campground & Cabins

    Awesome campground

Arrival was smooth. Parked outside of office and checked in. Was escorted to site and given a run through. Site has a slight dip but was not a big deal.

On site 12, it seems like you would need to share a fire pit and picnic table with site 13. Luckily, site 13 wasn’t ever occupied during our stay since there was a parked utility trailer there.

Pond has three paddle boats and you can fish. Water is murky and seems to only contain bluegill and bullheads. We had a lot of bites but never caught anything. Would be nice if it was stocked with more fish.

    Free firewood nightly was great.

Shop in the office contains supplies, food, and drinks. This was nice.

Camp hosts are very friendly and accommodating.

This is generally going to be a great place for campers looking to stay overnight but not really for extended stays.

Guide to Doniphan

Cabin camping near Doniphan, Nebraska offers overnight accommodations in the flat, agricultural heartland where summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F. Located in the Central Plains region at approximately 1,800 feet elevation, most cabin rentals operate seasonally with limited availability during winter months. Cabin options typically cluster near the Interstate 80 corridor that runs east-west through the region.

What to do

Fishing and paddleboating: Prairie Oasis Campground & Cabins maintains a small pond where guests can use free paddle boats and try fishing. "There is a nice little pond to walk around too," notes one visitor, while another camper mentioned, "We had a lot of bites but never caught anything. Would be nice if it was stocked with more fish."

Golfing: Double Nickel Campground sits adjacent to a golf course accessible on foot. "There is also a golf course that is within walking distance (not attached to park)," shares one reviewer. Another guest adds, "The golf course right next door is a deceptively tough 9-hole course."

Historical exploration: Pioneer Village Campground provides access to a museum with historical exhibits. "Don't miss the Harold Warp Pioneer Village Museum while you're there," recommends one camper. The museum admission is included with campground stays: "It did come with a free ticket to the museum, so that was cool."

What campers like

Well-maintained facilities: Visitors frequently mention clean bathrooms and shower houses. "The shower and bath houses are very clean. There is lots to keep kids busy," reports a camper at Grand Island KOA. Another adds, "Clean bathrooms and well kept property. There is a mixture of shaded and non-shaded sites."

Family-friendly activities: Multiple campgrounds offer recreational amenities beyond swimming pools. "There are all sorts of games: Basketball, volleyball, miniature golf, Large Jenga, etc...," notes one visitor. At Prairie Oasis, a camper appreciated the "paddle boats, swing set and sand box" that kept children entertained.

Evening campfires: Free firewood is offered at some locations. "Patty and Todd are awesome hosts. It was near freezing when we stayed, so the free firewood helped keep us warm!" writes a visitor to Prairie Oasis Campground & Cabins. Several campgrounds include fire rings at cabin sites for evening gatherings.

What you should know

Highway noise considerations: Most cabin accommodations sit near Interstate 80, creating ambient traffic sounds. "It is directly adjacent to the highway so there is some noise but it's not too bad. We actually felt it was quiet and relaxing," shares one Double Nickel camper. Another notes, "Although near the highway there was not a lot of road noise."

Seasonal operations: Local cabin rentals typically close during winter months. The operating season varies by location but generally runs from March/April through October. Weather can change rapidly, with one camper warning, "Watch the spring time weather though, it can get nasty!"

Cabin amenities vary significantly: Basic cabins may offer limited furnishings compared to deluxe models. "Older park but don't let that fool you. The owners are doing a great job maintaining the park," mentions a visitor about one campground with cabin accommodations. Most cabins require guests to bring their own bedding and toiletries.

Tips for camping with families

Recreation options: Families with children benefit from campgrounds with multiple play areas. At Grand Island KOA, one visitor observed that "There is a nice pool and large playground for the kids," while another mentioned their "3 year old spent most of the evening catching toads."

Pool availability: Summer stays should prioritize locations with swimming facilities. "Pool was chilly but nice after a long day of driving," reports one camper. Most campground pools operate only during summer months and may close during maintenance periods.

Child-friendly cabin selection: Request cabins near playground equipment for convenience. "We stayed in an air conditioned camping cabin. Super close to the pool and bathrooms!" shares a visitor. Some cabins feature porches with swings that families appreciate for evening relaxation time.

Tips from RVers

Site spacing considerations: Several campers note proximity issues between sites at certain campgrounds. "Great campground other that you are on top of your neighbors. Thought we might not be able to open our awning, only about 3 to 4 feet between sites," reports one RVer. For those converting from RVs to cabins during trips, site spacing remains relevant for outdoor activities.

Internet connectivity: Cabin renters requiring reliable internet should verify Wi-Fi strength before booking. "I got 2 bars on Verizon. The sites here are decently spaced especially for a private campground," notes one visitor at Double Nickel Campground. This connectivity information helps guests plan work needs during cabin stays.

Storm shelters: Nebraska experiences severe weather, particularly in spring and early summer. One campground provides notable safety features: "The campground has its own tornado siren plus an underground tornado shelter," mentions a visitor, providing important safety information for cabin campers during severe weather season.
