TENT CAMP ONLY - no drive in

Came here looking to camp in our rooftop tent. These 3-4 camp spots are tent only because the spots are about a 5 minute walk into the woods and you cannot drive up. We unfortunately had to find camp elsewhere

Would Not Recommend- POPULAR COLLEGE PARTY SITE

The road is very rutted but even sedans are able to make the drive in. When you get to the sites, you must park at the top of the hill and lug all your gear down to the creek which is a pain if you are needing to make multiple trips. There are 3 main sites, 2 of which are pretty close together. All was well until a huge group of loud and disrespectful college kids came and partied till 3am. Loud music, yelling and their dogs were off lead so constantly in our site. One of their dogs came and peed on one of our backpacks. It was awful and if we go back, we will be setting up tents and staying in each site if possible, just to avoid that nonsense again. I wouldn't recommend.

Beautiful but super primitive!

We had to park in a tiny road and walk about 5 min to our campsite. Super comfy and quiet tho for a getaway night ! The spot only had 3-4 sites tho

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the regulations for dispersed camping in Hyalite Canyon?

When dispersed camping in Hyalite Canyon, visitors must park in designated areas at the top of the hill rather than driving directly to the campsites. Pack-in, pack-out principles apply with no trash services available. Sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations accepted. Standard Forest Service regulations likely apply, including maximum stay limits (typically 14 days), proper food storage to prevent wildlife encounters, and fire restrictions when in effect. For the most current regulations, check with Custer Gallatin National Forest before your visit.

Where are the dispersed camping areas in Hyalite Canyon?

Dispersed camping in Hyalite Canyon is available in limited areas along the canyon. There are a small number of sites (approximately 3-4) located near a creek. To access these sites, you'll need to park at the top of a hill and walk about 5 minutes down to the camping area. The sites are nestled in a quiet area that provides a peaceful getaway, though some sites are relatively close to each other. The limited number of spots means arriving early is recommended, especially during peak season.

Are there any facilities available for dispersed camping in Hyalite Canyon?

Hyalite Canyon dispersed camping offers a true primitive experience with no facilities provided. There are no toilets, water sources, picnic tables, or trash receptacles at the sites. Campers must pack in all necessary supplies and pack out all waste. While the campsites are located near a creek which could potentially be used as a water source (after proper treatment), you should come prepared with all the water you'll need. The lack of facilities means proper preparation is essential for a comfortable stay.
