A rural spot close to Butte and some hiking but oh those stars!
Five miles down a gravel road through a private farm and you reach the campground. 2 loops of campsites. We chose the left loop. It sinks down into the rocks. Don’t let these rocky protectors keep you sleeping all night. The dip keeps other lights away and the stars pop! We were also the only people in this loop which added to the dark sky viewing. The right loop also has a picnic area that had a lot of tall grass around the picnic tables. The puddles and tall grass added to the mosquitos joining us in camp. There are a few vault toilets spread throughout. Water is available from 2 hand pumps. Warnings to store food appropriately are at the start but they also have plastic bear-proof garbage cans.
The trailhead is a couple miles before camp. It’s raining today so we will skip the hike. In fact the rain has caused a few issues at camp. A couple sites have deep ruts where a previous camper struggled with mud. Butte is only 20 miles away - we ducked in for pizza.
