      Watkins Mill State Park Campground

      Peaceful

We stayed Sunday-Wednesday and it was very peaceful. Sites are not right on top of each other and it looks like they all have a fire pit and picnic table. There are only a handful of paved spots and you will need leveling blocks on the gravel. Showers and bathrooms are clean and the hosts are very nice. New asphalt roads throughout the park; nice for walking, biking, etc. Be sure to get biscuits & gravy at “The General Store” just down the road from the park entrance.

Crammed in a tent camping field...

Let's Share COVID and a campfire song. When we booked a tent site in the KOA we didn't expect much but assumed it would work for the night while driving across the USA.  Upon arrival we were a little put off by being stuck with several other tents in a field and noticed we were expected to share our fire ring with the tent next door... this was not ok with us and we left promptly and snagged a nice spot in the nearby Blue Springs Recreation Area. Traveling during summer 2020 has been interesting and to expect strangers to share a fire ring and be crammed very close during a pandemic is not only careless but not fun. Basswood Country RV Resort

A great place to take the kids/grandkids

We have been camping at Basswood for several years, first with our children and now with our grandchildren. Basswood provides amenities that are great for entertaining children, includinga swimming pool and splash park, two playgrounds, a basketball goal, and fishing. Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie. There is a great little store with alcohol for the adults; ice cream treats, which we enjoy after a swim; and nearly any key item you might have forgotten to pack. Most roads throughout the campground are paved, and the campground is generally well-maintained. We appreciate the full-service RV spots, but there are very nice bathroom facilities, including showers, in two locations in the park.

      Worlds of Fun Village

      Novel Campground in Kansas City

This was an interesting stay at the Worlds of Fun campground. Located on the property there are RV sites and rental cabins. All RV sites were concrete with 50/30/20 amp, water and sewer. Back-in sites on rows 1 and 3 and pull through sites on row 2.

The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two.

There is a pool, hot tub, laundry and clean bathrooms with showers. The campground did attempt to improve privacy with strategically placed trees and shrubs.

Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3.

Security was disappointing, as there was no gate to the campground, nor a gate around it. So our campsite (site 2) that backed up to the road was 10 feet off the public sidewalk. Reviews of this campsite on other websites mentioned some petty theft, so we kept our outdoor compartments locked (nothing was stolen).

      Lake Paradise Resort

      A gem being polished!

We had a fun and relaxing time and loved the woodsy feel to it. We stayed here for a weekend in July 2020 and had a great time!  It is under new ownership and they are working to remodel and renovate all areas. I got to meet one of the owners and one of the owner's kids who works there and they were very nice and very helpful.  In fact, all staff I had contact with were! We had a nice full hookup RV site with a very woodsy feel.  Well shaded, grass and trees, view of water and nice space around us. Gravel site with picnic table and fire ring.  The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler. Roads throughout campground are gravel, not paved, if that makes a difference with kids bringing scooters or bikes.  We drove around to see the rest of the campground and saw lots of sites that I'd like to camp in when we come back. The cabins look nice, too. Waved at people sitting in front of them, but did not see inside them.  I'm looking forward to go here again and excited to see the updates they make over the next year!

Note: Included in your camp fee you get 2 free daily passes per night of camping to the pool and a discounted rate for any other swimmers; so for our family with 4 we had the free passes go to the parents and paid $3 each for the kids to swim & we did this two days.  As long as you have the wrist band on you can come and go all day to the pool.

Cons: quite a bit of poison oak around the fish cleaning area, shade at the pool is at a minimum, my phone (AT&T) could not get service there.

      Tidy and well run park

This park is convient to I-29 but far enough off the highway to be quiet and peaceful. Tent sites, full hookups as well as rooms and cabins are available. As a point of interest, this used to be a favorite fishing spot of President Harry S. Truman, check out the Mother in Law cabin—built at his request.

      Watkins Mill State Park Campground

      Great Camping

Stayed here for three nights. All spots have plenty of shade when we walked around. Shower house and bathrooms were clean and nice. Lots of things to do such as boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and swimming. Fire pits were even nice with an attached grill grate.

      Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

      Great overnight

Easy access to Interstate and pull through sites were long enough for our truck and 32’ trailer without having to unhitch. Stayed just one night as we passed through. Looked like it would be a good place to stay for multiple nights.

Clean campground. Nice grounds. Two good fenced dog parks.

Only negatives were our hookups were literally in the next site next to their table, and their fire ring was very close to our trailer.

    Guide to Cowgill

Cabin camping options near Cowgill, Missouri provide outdoor accommodations within 50 miles of this north-central Missouri community. Located in Caldwell County at 1,073 feet above sea level, this rural area experiences four distinct seasons with warm summers and cold winters. Most cabins remain accessible year-round though weather conditions limit certain amenities during winter months.

    What to do

Fishing at multiple lakes: Watkins Mill State Park Campground offers a small lake perfect for fishing and kayaking. "Beautifully layed out with paved access, trees spots and a nice lake," notes Anita M., who appreciated the accessible facilities. The lake supports multiple species with bank fishing permitted year-round.

Hiking trail access: The 3.75-mile paved trail at Watkins Mill State Park Campground circles the lake and connects directly to camping areas. "The trail wraps the lake and connects to the edge of the campground," explains Jason C., highlighting its convenient access for campers.

Historical exploration: Visit the historic sites near camping cabins for educational experiences. "If you like history, take a tour of the woolen mill part. Very cool," recommends Josh P., referring to the preserved 19th-century woolen mill at Watkins Mill, which provides insight into the area's industrial past.

Swimming pools: Several cabin rental sites provide pool access during summer months. At Lake Paradise Resort, the renovated pool offers unique features for families. "It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler," reports Julie B.

    What campers like

Peaceful rural settings: The rural location near Cowgill offers quiet, undisturbed camping experiences. "Small, secluded camp sites on picturesque lawn surrounding 3-story red brick farmhouse near Higginsville, MO," writes Frank H. about Green Acres at Red Brick Farmhouse, highlighting the tranquility found at smaller properties.

Clean, maintained facilities: Campers frequently mention appreciation for well-kept amenities. "The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry," describes Julie B. about Lake Paradise Resort, noting recent property improvements under new ownership.

Family-oriented activities: Seasonal events and regular activities keep families entertained at larger resorts. At Basswood Country RV Resort, "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," explains Tori G., detailing the regular scheduled programming.

Fishing without licenses: Some private camping areas offer fishing without requiring state permits. "You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," Shannon G. observed at Basswood Resort, noting the convenience for families with children.

    What you should know

Seasonal operation schedules: Not all cabin rentals remain open year-round. Worlds of Fun Village operates seasonally from March 1 through October 30, aligning with the adjacent theme park schedule.

Kitchen facilities vary widely: Plan meals according to available amenities. While some cabins include small kitchenettes, others provide only outdoor cooking options. Bring appropriate food preparation supplies based on specific cabin features.

Proximity to airports: Some campgrounds experience aircraft noise due to flight paths. "The campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be," explains Brian A. about Basswood Country RV Resort, noting that flights generally cease around 10 pm.

Reservation requirements: Advance booking becomes essential during peak seasons. "Stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet," reports Deb M. about off-season stays at Worlds of Fun Village, suggesting better availability and rates during shoulder seasons.

    Tips for camping with families

Pool access considerations: At cabin rentals with swimming facilities, verify operating seasons. "Note: Included in your camp fee you get 2 free daily passes per night of camping to the pool and a discounted rate for any other swimmers," explains Julie B. about Lake Paradise Resort's policies, noting the per-person charges for additional swimmers.

Playground availability: Several campgrounds maintain playground equipment for children. "Nice play area for kids as well as themed weekends with lots of activities planned that kids can do," reports Robin R. about family-friendly amenities at Basswood Resort.

Weekend activity planning: Schedule stays to coincide with organized events. "Very family oriented! lots of great spaces. fishing and walking trail with in a short walk!" shares Megan E. about Soggy Bottom Campground, emphasizing activities within easy walking distance for children.

Cabin capacity considerations: Check sleeping arrangements before booking. Most cabins accommodate 4-6 people comfortably but configurations vary significantly between properties.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: Choose locations based on specific needs and preferences. At Worlds of Fun Village, John L. advises: "Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3."

Access road conditions: Some properties feature challenging approach roads. "Roads going up higher past us were a little rough but made for great walks with kids," notes Brandi D. about Lake Paradise Resort, turning a potential negative into a positive recreational opportunity.

Concrete pad availability: For easier leveling and setup, seek cabins with improved parking areas. "All RV sites were concrete with 50/30/20 amp, water and sewer. Back-in sites on rows 1 and 3 and pull through sites on row 2," explains John L. about the layout at Worlds of Fun Village.

Long-term vs. vacation sections: Some campgrounds separate overnight guests from permanent residents. "We visited Basswood Country RV Resort in October 2020. All in all our experience was a positive one, but prospective visitors should know that there is a large section of long term renters that you must drive through to get to the short term sites," Drew S. shares, providing context about property layout.
