Timbers Edge Campground
Quiet Getaway!
We stayed here during their Equestrian Weekends several years in a row, great hosts and large lots make this place a nice hidden gem!
Timbers Edge Campground features equestrian weekend events and provides sites suitable for camping with horses in the Whitehall area. The campground has rustic amenities including pit toilets, a pond, and hot showers in an unheated shower room. Sites offer electric and water hookups with reasonable pricing for horse owners. The campground layout includes regular campsites and premium sites that offer more space and privacy. Regular sites can feel crowded with neighbors in close proximity. Management is responsive to issues that arise with seasonal visitors or other guests. Some campers have reported occasional noise and dust from dirt bikes and ATVs in the general camping areas.
Hungerford Lake area provides multiple options for equestrian camping, including the dedicated Hungerford Equestrian Group Campsite on Forest Road 5134 near Big Rapids. The surrounding Manistee National Forest offers dispersed camping areas with horse staging facilities and connections to riding trails. Horses can be kept at designated areas while campers enjoy the rustic setting. The nearby White River special area of the Manistee National Forest has numbered dispersed campsites accessible via 160th Avenue south of Arthur Road. While there are no dedicated amenities in the dispersed areas, these sites accommodate tent camping with horses and provide trail access. Duke Creek Campground offers on-site horseback rides for visitors who prefer guided experiences rather than bringing their own horses. The roads accessing these equestrian camping areas are generally navigable by vehicles with horse trailers during normal conditions.

I went in November. Most campers were there on the weekend. Pit toilets, a pond, hot showers but shower room unheated, no dump station, nice size lots. A lot of horses and hunters. Price was good for electric and water. Nice for dog walking. Friendly managers. No cell service
Dispersed camping and camp sites available. There are horse staging areas and hiking trails. The lake is nice, small enough for a kayak/ no motor boat, nice.
Right across the road from Michigan's Adventure amusement park
Run down campground with rude disrespectful owner. We were attacked over something that was so trivial...a few hoof prints by our trailer where we we told to park. Horses did not dig or paw. She drove up to us and complained that they tore up her grass, which wasn't true. There was no grass to begin with, it was moss. Our ponied stood quietly tied to trailer as we saddled up and then when we came back from our rife and unsaddled. We were with them the entire time....it was a short day ride with a friend who was camping there. Woman never asked or told us to picket. Normal function for horseman is to ride from trailer. I Just couldn't believe it. Told woman we understood and would be leaving and wouldn't be back. She kept running her mouth. I told her to drop it and that again, we would leave and would not be back. Kept running her mouth, and Id had enough and told her to shut up.
Your kids will LOVE this place-we had a blast! Train rides, Pool, Scavenger hunt, trails, bike rides, there just weren't enough hours in the day! We should have reserved an entire week! The facilities were spotless, there is a store, gated entrance, nice shady lots, friendly staff, everything was perfect, we can't wait to go back!
The sites were very small at this campground. Our fire pit was so close to our trailer we didn’t dare use it. There is a small playground for kids but not much else to do. They advertise disc golf but there are only 2 baskets on the playground within a few feet of each other. Not an actual disc golf course. There are hiking trails but unfortunately we were not able to use them due to it being hunting season. Won’t be camping here again any time soon.
This is the White River special area of the Manistee National Forest. While there are numbered campsites, there are no facilities or amenities. This is more suitable for tents or maybe small campers. Best access seems to be along 160th avenue south of Arthur road. The road seems a bit sketchy but should be okay for most vehicles. We explored the area while camping at nearby Pines Point campground.
Neighbors right on top of you. Dirtbikes n 4 wheelers flying around causing dust n access noise. Premium Sites might be the way to go though.

Horseback riding trails: At Double JJ Resort, riders can access trails directly from the campground. "There are 2 water parks on the ranch as well as horseback riding and a river to explore," notes Bryan R., highlighting the multiple activities available in one location.
Swimming and water activities: Duke Creek Campground maintains a swimming pool that receives positive reviews from campers. Nicole C. mentions, "The pool is very nice and the store is stocked nicely," providing a cooling option for after-trail activities during hot summer days.
Wildlife viewing: The Condon Lakes area within Manistee National Forest provides quieter camping areas away from busier equestrian sites. Dexter V. reports, "Lots of wildlife," making this a good option for those who want nature observation opportunities between trail rides.
Family-friendly amenities: Duke Creek Campground offers structured activities for children. According to Becky P., "Train rides, Pool, Scavenger hunt, trails, bike rides, there just weren't enough hours in the day!" Many families appreciate the gated entrance for added security.
Varied terrain options: The White River Campsite area provides different riding environments. Kendra H. notes, "This is the White River special area of the Manistee National Forest. While there are numbered campsites, there are no facilities or amenities," making it suitable for more adventurous riders seeking a rustic experience.
Off-trail vehicle options: For those who trailer both horses and recreational vehicles, Whiskey Creek Resort accommodates multiple activities. Jeff F. describes it as having "Great UTV, motorcycle, horse riding" with "fuel on site" and a "small lake," allowing riders to alternate between horseback and motorized recreation.
Site selection matters: Regular camping areas at some locations can feel cramped while premium sites offer more space. At Timbers Edge Campground, Aaron Y. cautions about regular sites having "Neighbors right on top of you. Dirtbikes n 4 wheelers flying around causing dust n access noise. Premium Sites might be the way to go though."
Seasonal considerations: Most equestrian facilities have limited services during colder months. Sharon S. reports visiting Timbers Edge "in November. Most campers were there on the weekend. Pit toilets, a pond, hot showers but shower room unheated, no dump station."
Road conditions: Access roads to dispersed camping areas require appropriate vehicles. Regarding White River sites, Kendra H. advises, "Best access seems to be along 160th avenue south of Arthur road. The road seems a bit sketchy but should be okay for most vehicles."
Guided rides available: Not all families bring their own horses. Cheyanne P. highlights that Duke Creek offers "on site horseback rides" calling it "the best part," making it accessible for non-horse-owning families wanting to experience trail riding.
Activity scheduling: Campgrounds with structured children's activities require planning. A camper at Whiskey Creek Campground named Stacy H. appreciated the "Friendly staff, made us feel comfortable being first timers camping. Very helpful!!" when navigating the activity schedule.
Management responsiveness: Staff intervention affects family camping experience. Nicole C. observed at Duke Creek that "Some of the seasonal kids got a little wild, but the owners were quick to respond!" indicating active management of behavior issues.
Utility connections: Hookup layouts vary between campgrounds. Josh N. at Double JJ Resort found "Water and electric ports were shared on one site so other campers were constantly on our site hooking up and adjusting," creating unexpected traffic through their campsite.
Site surface conditions: Soil composition affects comfort in RV sites. Josh N. also noted, "Maybe it was due to weather but the sites were full of dirt and dust that got everywhere over the weekend," suggesting bringing outdoor mats and cleanup supplies.
Maneuverability considerations: Not all equestrian campgrounds accommodate larger rigs. At Hungerford Lake, Arron P. describes "Dispersed camping and camp sites available. There are horse staging areas and hiking trails," but the rustic nature means limited turn-around space for longer combinations.
