    Covenant Hills Camp

    Group camping for Sukkot

We had a large group of families with varying ages and abilities.  We used multiple different styles of cabins and a few RV sites, as well as various buildings for activities.  All in all, it was an incredible time and I highly recommend it.  Staff was helpful with activities such as archery but, seldom seen if not directly helping with things.  It was nice to feel like we had the run of the place but, still know that help was available if we needed it.  The location is pretty great, off the beaten path but, within 30 minutes of major stores and conveniences.
Laundry facilities would have been awesome since we were staying a full week but, there was a laundromat only about 15 minutes away.
The food selection was about what you'd expect in a public school cafeteria and resulted in health-minded guests needing to make their own meals in the cabins and meals were VERY rushed, only allowing 30 minutes for our large group to get their food, eat and be out of the building.
The grounds were well maintained for a rustic campground but, bathrooms and meeting buildings were adequately upgraded and offered pleasant amenities, such as a game room, large gym and decent air conditioning.

We had a great time here and look forward to returning one day!

    Close sites

Nice and clean. I’m in the inner loop though and the sites are very close together. If I came back I would definitely try to stay out the outer loop. Electric, fire pit, and picnic table on site. No grate. Showers and bathrooms available.

    Absolutely great time!

Walk-in site F was literally the perfect campsite. Fully secluded (except a few curious hikers who stopped in around lunchtime), easy 1 mile walk from parking lot, can kayak right up to it on the calm lake, hammock posts, picnic table, fire pit, gorgeous night sky views. A+ and 10/10

McGinnis Lake Modern Campground — Holly Recreation Area

    Holly is amazing!

NOTE: Hollys dump station is still closed. There is a "mini dump" station for portable tanks behind the bathouse. You can dump at KOA for 35$ or at other state parks for free.

This was our second time at Holly. We stayed with 2 other groups sites 65-68. The sites are huge. Some have more shade than others. Power is set up very close to the asphalt pad. Water spigot was 3 sites away. Outhouse was about 5 sites away. Kids enjoyed the playground & dogs enjoyed the trails. Fire pit was huge & clean. Will definitely come again.

    "Late night check in"

We came in late for just a place to rest before heading further north. Drop box available after 10pm(summer). Between 8p-10p there is a yellow phone to check in with. Can book day of until 8pm online. Easy to get into late at night. Big lots. Fire pit. Sites are electric only. Recommend to have extension cord for some sites, as plug in can be far. Website has pictures for sites and will advise if lot gets wet. Staff was very friendly the next morning. Updated our rec pass at the park before leaving. Lots of trails and swimming beach near park.

    Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground

    Poorly Run

I have stayed there twice in the last two years. Its poorly maintained especially for the cost of the site per night. I used this park regularly 20 years ago. Much of it can be blamed on DNR cuts but some of it is poor management. I was also offended by the double standard of rules enforcement. There is s group called “Friends of Sleepy Hollow”, who proudly display their signs in front of their motor homes. I suspect this was a well intentioned organization. But their members get a pass from the ranger regardind quiet hours, yet jumps at any of their concerns. The whole park is over grown and understaffed. I have had much better camp sites in rustic campgrounds around the state.

    Bay City State Park Campground

    Amazing weekend for the kids!

This is one of the best campgrounds for kids that I've ever visited!!!

The campground itself is beautifully laid out and maintained. It features roughly a 150 some odd sites ranging from tent sites to RV and cabins. Each site has a cement fire ring and electric hookup. There are communal water spickets generously scattered around the grounds. The bathrooms and showers are very clean. They are closed an hour a day for thourgho cleaning and restocked and wiped down in the late evening. They have one large group camp area, but it is for organizational reservations only (as most of them are). Howeve, there is a cul-de-sac of 5 or 6 (I can't remember) sites off by itself. Those sites are very large (except the one on the end, which of course we had reserved for the weekend) and have huge space between them. There is also an additional parking pad there for overflow. Though they're not a sanctioned group site these would be perfect for it. We've already planned to reserve these sites next year for our large (35+people) family camp weekend. The drive around the campground is all paved and very long, so be sure to bring your bikes!!

Now for the amusements and conveniences. . . . . There is a small playground in the campground, but you have to cut through campsites to reach it. There are trails for hiking around the wider state park area as well as a few that lead across the street to the swim area and day park. Take a 2 min walk from the camp office across to the day park and you'll find the Spray by the Bay splash pad, a huge timber playground, beautiful sandy beach along Lake Huron, sandy swim area, geocaching, pavilions, well kept bathrooms and changing rooms. We spent all day at the park with 4 kids 6yrs and under and not a single on of them complained of being bored.

They have campground hosts that facilitate free activities organized by the park. We did a kids craft and enjoyed hot cocoa or coffee Saturday morning and then returned after dinner for Back-to-School bingo and popcorn. See pic of the August schedule for a better idea of what was offered.

They sold ice and wood at the camp office and there was an ice cream place next door to the park. It's a 5 min walk from the park office.

We didn't have to leave the park once all weekend. It was so relaxing to have everything we needed on hand and not have to run out for things.

One final note: there were quite a few May Flies. According to the park office they're pretty much there all summer. They weren't bad at the campground except at night around the bathrooms. We walked over to the day park before breakfast one morning and the playground was covered with them. As the day got hotter and the playground got busier there were hardly any, but that morning visit was rough. We actually abandoned the playground till later in the day.

    Great destination

Great spot. Friend rented out two plots in the rustic campsites. The walk from the parking lot to the site was a bit of a hike but it was nice to be near the lake and not a bunch of cars. Great fire pit and place to place tents.

McGinnis Lake Modern Campground — Holly Recreation Area

Great Spot Only 1 Hour From Home

Spent 2 night in the Aspen Loop tent camping. Minus the silk/inch worms in the trees it was great. Fire pit was large and bathrooms were clean. We did a 6 mile hike and some fishing. Great easy quick weekend away.

Spacious, wooded campsites: Holly State Recreation Area offers secluded sites. According to one camper, "Nice campground. Paved sites. Some are pretty secluded." Another visitor mentioned, "Campsites are wooded and pretty private," providing a more natural glamping experience than many developed sites.

Evening activities and entertainment: Groveland Oaks County Park offers organized events for all ages. As one visitor explained, "They have campground hosts that facilitate free activities organized by the park. We did a kids craft and enjoyed hot cocoa or coffee Saturday morning and then returned after dinner for Back-to-School bingo and popcorn."

What You Should Know

Electric hookup considerations: Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground has uniquely positioned electrical connections. One camper advised, "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension." Plan to bring extension cords.

Site reservation tips: For popular glamping destinations near Saginaw, advance planning is essential. As one visitor to Holly State Recreation Area noted, "Every year they put together an awesome Halloween trick or treat weekend, but be sure to book the day of six months before because otherwise you will not get a site."

Late arrival procedures: Many parks accommodate after-hours check-ins. A visitor to Bay City State Park Campground shared, "We came in late for just a place to rest before heading further north. Drop box available after 10pm(summer). Between 8p-10p there is a yellow phone to check in with. Can book day of until 8pm online."

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground proximity: Bay City State Park Campground offers excellent play areas for children. A camper observed, "This is one of the best campgrounds for kids that I've ever visited!!! The campground itself is beautifully laid out and maintained... Take a 2 min walk from the camp office across to the day park and you'll find the Spray by the Bay splash pad, a huge timber playground, beautiful sandy beach."

Activity scheduling: Groveland Oaks County Park provides numerous structured activities for children. One family mentioned, "Great campground, so much to do, especially for families with smaller children." Another camper shared, "We feel like we went up North without the driving four hours. The park is well laid out and includes a ton of fun activities for young and old."

Budget-friendly options: For affordable luxury camping near Saginaw, Otter Lake Park Campground offers good value. A visitor noted, "Beautiful views & so much to do! I love how affordable it is. You can rent kayaks $7/hour or a 2 person small boat for $10/hour. Very good swimming beach with tons of places to take in the peaceful views."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Some Saginaw area glamping sites require preparation for uneven terrain. At Bay City State Park Campground, a visitor cautioned, "The sites were the normal state park campsite fare... lots of moving around to get your electric hooked up to the shared and oddly placed power poles. None have a camping pad, so it's random parking on the grass."

Light pollution considerations: For RVers camping near tent sites, being mindful of lighting helps everyone. One camper at Bay City State Park Campground noted, "We had no complaints about the campground itself but it would be nice if there was an RV lights out policy at night. It's really hard to sleep in a tent when your neighbors RV 'porch' light is on literally all night."
