Mount Pleasant, Michigan contains numerous camping options within an hour's drive in all directions. Located in the central Lower Peninsula at 771 feet elevation, the region has distinct four-season weather patterns with humid summers reaching into the 80s and cold winters with frequent snowfall. Camping season runs primarily from April through October with most glamping accommodations closed during winter months.
What to do
Lake activities: Hardy Pond at Brower Park offers multiple water recreation options with clean, accessible swimming areas. "The park maintains a clean beach area that staff rake daily to ensure a pleasant experience," reports a visitor. Brower Park Campground maintains boat launches, fishing piers, and fish cleaning stations for anglers.
Hiking trails: The Dragon Trail near Hardy Pond provides extensive outdoor exploration. "The park is right next to the Dragon Trail, a hiking and mountain biking trail that runs 47 miles round Hardy Pond. There is a short loop called the Brower Park Loop that has some amazing views and is great to hike," notes one camper.
Disc golf: Ionia State Recreation Area offers disc golf among its outdoor activities. "Ionia has so many great outdoor activities for almost anyone. There is a disc golf course, mountain bike trail, equestrian trails, hiking trails, a beautiful no wake lake perfect for swimming, kayaking, or fishing," explains a visitor who stayed in the area.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Many glamping options near Mount Pleasant maintain well-kept bathrooms and showers. "Bathrooms are clean, and the grounds are well kept. Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table. Electricity and water hookup is included at each site," notes a visitor to Brower Park.
Family-friendly atmosphere: Snow Lake Kampground provides structured activities for children. "Every weekend they have a theme. We stayed when they had the country western weekend. They had all kinds of stuff going on for kids. Pony rides, wagon rides, petting zoo, games and activities," mentions one camper.
Natural surroundings: Sites with privacy and natural settings appeal to many visitors. "Spacious sites, friendly staff," mentions a Newaygo State Park visitor. Another adds, "Very wooded and spread out among the campsites! Close to the water, and there's a trail along the perimeter of the campground with amazing views. Great stargazing as well."
What you should know
Site selection considerations: Some campgrounds have significant variation in site quality and privacy. At School Section Lake Veteran's Park Campground, "Small lake with clean shallow beach, wooded sites, clean but slightly dated facilities led to fun times with grandkids. My site was a back in with not a lot of maneuvering room but even though some may feel these sites are small, we had plenty of space."
No pets allowed policy: School Section Lake restricts pets. "Great park that offers both seasonal and weekend campers. No dogs allowed so make sure you plan accordingly," advises one visitor. This differs from most other glamping locations near Mount Pleasant that permit pets.
Seasonal considerations: Most glamping facilities operate from late spring through early fall. "Most sites are primarily from May 1 to Oct 1," according to the School Section Lake listing. Some facilities like Newaygo State Park remain open year-round but with limited amenities during winter.
Tips for camping with families
Beach options: Bay City State Park offers expanded water play facilities. "Take a 2 min walk from the camp office across to the day park and you'll find the Spray by the Bay splash pad, a huge timber playground, beautiful sandy beach along Lake Huron, sandy swim area, geocaching, pavilions, well kept bathrooms and changing rooms."
Activities for children: Most glamping locations provide designated play areas. "Great campground with an awesome lake and great swimming area! Kids love this park! Sometimes it gets busy. The shop has snacks and ice cream," notes a School Section Lake camper.
Bring necessary supplies: Advance preparation helps with successful family glamping. "Make sure you bring insect repellent!" advises a School Section Lake visitor. At some sites, extension cords may be required for electrical hookups due to outlet placement.
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Check site sizes before booking, especially for larger rigs. "You almost need 2 lots if you have a trailer that's larger than 25 ft. Especially if you have slide outs," warns a School Section Lake camper. At Sleepy Hollow State Park, "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension."
Hookup availability: Full-service sites require advance booking at most locations. "Each rv/trailer site is full hookup! Has both 50&30 amp. Tent sites also have water and electric," notes a Snow Lake visitor. Check reservation requirements well in advance, especially for summer weekends.
Road access: Access routes vary between locations. "Paved roads. A few are full hookup. Those are in a row by the playground," notes a Wilson State Park camper. Sites at Snow Lake Kampground and Bay City State Park can accommodate larger RVs with improved access routes.
