Manistee National Forest provides multiple options for equestrian camping near Luther, Michigan, with several dedicated facilities designed specifically for horse owners. The forest's sandy soil drains well after rain, making for good trail conditions through most of the riding season from late April to October. Trail elevations in this region vary between 800-1,200 feet above sea level, creating moderate difficulty levels suitable for both beginning and experienced riders.
What to do
Trail riding through pine forests: Hungerford Lake Campground offers access to numerous horse trails through diverse terrain. "Dispersed camping and camp sites available. There are horse staging areas and hiking trails. The lake is nice, small enough for a kayak/no motor boat, nice," notes Arron P.
Explore equestrian trail networks: Turtle Lake Campground provides access to additional riding areas. "They have a separate equestrian camping area that have water and electric hookup sites," explains Chris R., highlighting the dedicated facilities for horse owners.
Lake activities between rides: When not on horseback, visitors can enjoy fishing at Lake Dubonnet Trail Camp. "Quiet, not populated, and beautiful views. I've solo camped here a few times and it's great for early morning paddles and peaceful relaxation," shares Kate K.

Tips for camping with families
Look for family-friendly events: Manton Trails RV Park offers organized activities. "Great campground, larger sites, pull thru sites available. Low rates even on holidays... they have a large building for events....over the weekend they a concert! Live band and food truck....free to all campers and their friends!" shares Sarah S.
Find campgrounds with play areas: Some facilities offer dedicated recreation spaces. "What I liked best about this park was that my children were not caked in dirt. While I understand that comes with the territory of camping, this campground provides a bit more of a grassy setting and offers a nice playground," explains Ann D. about Turtle Lake.
Consider noise levels: Some campgrounds are quieter than others. "We stayed here in our van and it was just what we needed," notes Tobi W. about Marzinski, which tends to be less crowded even during peak season.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing considerations: Look for campgrounds that provide adequate distance between sites. "So this place is awesome, big time. There's picnic tables, fire rings, water available, a well maintained pit toilet, and 21 sites! The pine trees are amazing and the road in was super accessible. 20 min to town to restock with plenty of gas stations on the way," shares Cameron about Marzinski.
Check for utility hookups: Many horse camping areas have limited RV services. "Spacious campsites with good visible/verizon service. We did not get service with T-Mobile. It has a pit toilet, fire pits, and picnic tables," notes AbeAndMel_Vantravels about the facilities at Marzinski.
Water supply planning: Most equestrian campgrounds have water for horses but may lack hookups. "Was a quiet. Simple.. Just with nature...Site was clean, across street you can buy firewood...Was a pleasant 2 night's....From site to the nearest store 15-20 min away..If needed...Had no issues," reports Mario F.
